(‘13) under coach Jim Konrad, a BGSU men’s soccer alum ... earned All-State honors as a senior in 2012, after leading the team in scoring with 16 goals and 20 assists ... a three-time All-DuPage Valley Conference selection ... finished second in school history with 36 career assists ... helped the Huskies to a combined record of 57-9-3 over his last three years, with a conference championship in all three seasons ... had 14 goals and 18 assists as a junior, when North went 21-1-1 overall ... scored five goals and added 10 assists in his sophomore campaign, as the Huskies finished fourth in the state ... team captain as a senior ... PERSONAL 22 Joseph Patrick Sullivan was born on Sept. 2, 1994, in Naperville, Ill. ... son of Tim and Marilyn Sullivan ... the oldest of two boys ... plans to major in business at BGSU ... has played club ball for the Galaxy Soccer Club ... helped that team to a state championship as well as a national title in 2012 ... a three-year captain for the Galaxy. BRENT WINKLER DEFENDER • 5-5 • FR./FR. FARMINGTON HILLS, MICH. (FARMINGTON) HIGH SCHOOL A three-year letterwinner at Farmington H.S. (‘12) under coach Luke Juncaj ... did not play high-school soccer in 2012, instead playing for the US Soccer Development Academy Team ... was named to the all-state third team as a junior in the fall of 2011 ... earned all-league and all-district first-team accolades in each of his three years with FHS ... led the team in assists as a freshman, and paced the Falcons in goals as both a sophomore and junior ... had 36 goals and 22 assists during that three-year span ... team captain as a junior. PERSONAL Brent Alexander Winkler was born on May 5, 1995, in Stockton, Calif. ... son of James and Mary Winkler ... the youngest of two sons ... plans to major in business at BGSU ... has played club ball with Crew Wolves Academy (CSA Wolves) ... captained the Wolves for four years and helped the club to U14 and U16 State Cup championships ... also has extensive 15 Olympic Development Program (ODP) experience, with four years on the Region II team. 39 BOWLING GREEN • 2013 MEN’S SOCCER BGSUFALCONS.COM FALCON ALUMNI A large contingent of BGSU men’s soccer alumni came back to Bowling Green for the first game under the lights in program history, as the Falcons took on Hartwick College on Oct. 22, 2011. That group of alums included Gary Kovacs (left photo, second from right), who was a major donor in the Cochrane Field lights project. Kovacs was recognized on the field at the Hartwick match, and was joined by (left to right) Mickey Cochrane, Eric Nichols and then-BGSU Director of Athletics Greg Christopher. One of only 11 football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. CONFERENCE Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in the 67-year history of the league in March of 24 Public Square, 15th Floor 2009. (216) 566-4622 www.mac-sports.com HISTORY OF THE MAC Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men’s and women’s basket- ball since moving to Northeast Ohio. The MAC was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Massachusetts, for football only. Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998), Kent State University (1951), Miami University (1947), Ohio University (1946) and Temple University (2007). The West Division members are Ball State University MAC Commissioner (1973), Central Michigan University (1971), Eastern Michigan University (1971), Jon Steinbrecher Northern Illinois University (1975-86, 1997), University of Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan University (1947). In 1946 men’s basketball was the first competitive sport in the MAC, which now spon- sors a total of 23 sports. Women’s sports were brought into the conference’s structure in 1980. 23 SPORTS For men, championships (11) are sponsored in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, golf and tennis. For women, championships (12) are sponsored in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis.
