The population of Sandgate & West Folkestone was 5,910 in the Office for National Statistics 2013 Mid Year population estimates. This comprises 3,030 males and 2,880 females. There is a greater proportion of the population aged over 50, and the ward has, relative to Kent, a smaller share of its population aged under 19. The large male population aged 20-29 is probably due to the presence of the Shorncliffe Army Camp within the ward.

Ethnicity

Sandgate & West Folkestone had 373 people on the 2011 Census who stated their ethnicity as ‘other Asian’. This equates to 6.5% of the population, which is considerably above the district or county figure. It is likely this is due to the presence of the Royal Ghurkha Regiment at Shorncliffe Army Camp since 2001. There are now over 200 Nepalese families living permanently in the area some of whom settled in the Sandgate & West Folkestone Ward. There is also a notable population of people identifying as ‘other white’, which is possibly people of European heritage.

The nursery is open five days a week Mondays to Saturday from 7.30am to 6pm all year round. The out of school facility provides care for school aged children during the term time. The breakfast club operates from 7.30 to 9am and an after school club from 3pm to 6pm.

Royal Gurkha Rifles

The Royal Gurkha Rifles (RGR) are stationed at Sir John Moore Barracks in Shorncliffe Camp. The relationship between the Gurkhas and the local community is good and they participate in local events such as Hythe Festival, Remembrance Day parades amongst others.

Car Parks

There are car parks at Castle Road, Wilberforce Road, Golden Valley Shopping Centre. There is a large car park at Saga for staff parking. There is a small car park at Gough Road. Places of Worship

There is one church in the ward, St Paul’s Church75. Located in an elevated position on Sandgate Hill, with access via the entrance to the Saga site St Paul’s is a building people may miss as they drive along the main Folkestone to Hythe road. Indeed this small gem of a building is so well “hidden” that some of the locals are only just getting to know it. There is a Hindu Temple at Shorncliffe which serves the local Nepalese community. Local schools are able to visit.
