MONTCLAIR WALK AND BIKE TOURS: SIX SELF-GUIDED TOURS 1 Bicyclists in front of the George Inness House, c. 1890 A LETTER FROM MONTCLAIR TOWN HISTORIAN SIX SELF-GUIDED TOURS In 1963, David Alloway and Mary Arny wrote A Goodly Heritage, a book that touched upon thousands of years of unrecorded history of our town, going back to the Lenni Lenape, who camped here as they traveled to and from 1 MONTCLAIR TOWN CENTER 1.25 MILES 2 PINE STREET HISTORIC DISTRICT 1 MILE summer homes near the ocean. They wrote about our 300 years of recorded history starting when we were part of the Dutch New Netherlands, then part of Acquackanock, a parcel of 10,000 acres owned by the Dutch, and then Speertown, a community so named because of the many families with the surname Speer. They talked about the English settlement of New Worke or Newark as it came to be known, their migration west to the base of First Mountain, which became known as Cranetown because of the many families named Crane that lived here. The dividing line between the Dutch and English settlements was Watchung Avenue. Families moved away from the major centers as populations grew. A town called Bloomfield, which included Montclair, was created from Newark in 1812. Officially, Montclair was calledWest Bloomfield. It was a farming town. Things started changing when the railroads were built; one in 1857, and another in 1868. Railroads allowed wealthy factory owners and merchants from Newark and New York to raise families here, away from the city smog. -

The District lies within walking distance of the Watchung Railroad Station, which is situated at the center of the town mid-way between Montclair and the village of Upper Montclair (formerly Speertown), to the north. There are no intrusions in Marlboro Park, which includes 66 properties built between 1870-1925. Numbers listed in parentheses after an individual site relate to numbers on the Historic District Map of the Marlboro Park District. The Inventory numbers used within the text refer to the Montclair Cultural Resource Survey completed in April 1982. A copy of the Inventory is available to the public at the Montclair Public Library and the Office of New Jersey Heritage. The District boundaries conform to those on the map of the original brochure for Marlboro Park, issued by the Mont clair Realty Company in 1900.1 The company, incorporated in 1898, offered "modern homes, of the best construction," for sale or rent in the most attractive and congenial surround ings. An office was established at 153 Watchung Avenue (#42) to provide information and assistance to interested parties. The Park extends east and west along that part of Watchung Avenue between North Fullerton and Grove Street, and includes Fairfield Street to the south, a short section of Montclair Avenue (south of Watchung Avenue), Waterbury Road to the north and three residences on the east side of Grove Street. -

Lisanne Renner Friends of Anderson Park www.FriendsOfAndersonPark.com BUILDING OAKCROFT, A ‘RESIDENTIAL PARK’ Anderson Park’s development turned out to be a real-estate improvement project as much as a community-spirited beautification effort. The park’s creation provided the impetus for a new suburban neighborhood just south of its borders, and a symbiotic relationship existed among the housing developer, the Essex County Park Commission, and the Olmsted Brothers firm: the developer ensured worthy surroundings for the park, promising to build “fairly good dwellings” facing it,1 and in return the commission and the landscape architect John Charles Olmsted agreed to give up a sliver of park property for the creation of The Parkside, a road that would allow construction of houses overlooking the park.2 The town, which approved this arrangement to help the new Oakcroft subdivision, also benefited through beautification and increased property taxes. As one civic leader put it when advocating for park development in 1906: “A block of parkland is usually an ornament to at least four blocks surrounding it.”3 By the time the Essex County park system was just a few years old, the ability for its parks to pay for themselves by enhancing property values was already being touted.4 And after about two decades a study of Essex County parks would confirm what town leaders already knew: The value of property adjoining four county parks studied -
