STUDENTS ENCOURAGED TO TAKE ON THE MONEY STUFF CHALLENGE

Member for Daryl Maguire MP has encouraged local high students to get involved in the NSW Fair Trading Money Stuff Challenge.

Mr Maguire said that students would have the opportunity to devise innovative messages about consumer rights, with the best entries in line for category prizes of $250 for individual students and $2000 for schools.

“The Money Stuff Challenge allows students in Years 8 to 10 to learn about consumer rights by developing educational material for their peers on issues such as eligibility for refunds and avoiding scams,” Daryl Maguire said.

“By tackling issues of relevance to young people such as signing mobile phone contracts, online shopping and buying your first car, the competition teaches students to become savvy consumers.”

Minister responsible for Fair Trading, Victor Dominello, said the Money Stuff Challenge had been running for over 15 years and last year’s program saw over 1,000 NSW high students involved.

“The program encourages students to become subject experts in consumer law and to share their learning with fellow students in innovative ways,” Mr Dominello said.

“Entries can include short movies, websites, magazines, radio plays and more and can be submitted online via the Money Stuff website.”

The competition is run as an in-class assessment for students meeting the learning needs of the commerce syllabus.

Information packs are being distributed to schools which contain a student guide outlining entry requirements and a teacher guide for running the classroom component of the competition. A gallery of past winners can be viewed at www.moneystuff.net.au.

STEP OUT ON NATI0NAL VOLUNTEER WEEK 2015 Murrumbidgee Local Health District celebrated National Volunteer Week 11 - 17 May by congratulating 90 Tai Chi, Community Exercise and Aqua fitness leaders for their hard work and commitment to preventing falls. The award-winning program offers low cost 'fail-safe' physical activity for older people in rural communities with trained volunteer instructors. Almost 800 people now take part in 118 tai chi and community exercise classes weekly across the District, nearly two per cent of the target population. Director of Integrated Care and Partnership, Fiona Renshaw, said the leaders contribute thousands of volunteer hours each year. "They do a great job encouraging older adults to stay active and are a real asset to the local Health District,” Ms Renshaw said. The latest figures show falls cost upwards of $558 million in NSN each year.
