Each year ESP members take over the gallery to use as a space to test ideas and show work in progress. This year Chloe Ashley, Laura Cooper, Aileen Doherty, Luke Routledge and Emily Warner are occupying the gallery as part of an expanded studio, and are joined by other ESP members who have added their work to the mix for the Summer Camp Show. Birmingham Open Studios, Events and openings across Birmingham, 12pm–late 1 Grand Union: Open Studios and Summer Party, 6–9pm v For August Digbeth First Friday, Grand Union a throwing a summer party! To kick of the summer Come and explore Birmingham Open Studios, showing the work of nearly 100 artists, across 11 break join Digbeth for drinks, music and dancing and celebrate the inaugural Birmingham Open spaces with 5 one off events on 3rd & 4th August. Take a behind the scenes look into the canal-side Studios Event. From 6–9pm studios in units 15 & 17 and Modern Clay will be open to meet artists, warehouses, old factories, and new developments that make up Birmingham’s artists studios, explore working process and see GUs studio spaces. From 9pm–late join us in the gallery space for summer celebrations accompanied by drinks, music and good company. workshops and project spaces. 3 Stryx: In Difference, 5–9pm v We live in a time of what seems continuous anxiety inducing states. Tortured by worry we fantasies of calm, dream of recognition and strive for the perfect home, love life, status and travelling to exotic places. Artists Hamp, Taylor and Spackman, attempt to present the antidote in association with Stryx Gallery. This exhibition will be a collective mindset of stoic thought. Embracing the varied practices on show, the works are brought together with a playful approach to life, art and a humorous acceptance that the one thing we all have in common, is that we are different.

4 Centrala Art Gallery: Invasion Night, 6–9pm v Focusing on the theme of Invasion and Uprising, Centrala will celebrate 1968 anniversary with a short movie screening about the Prague Spring and its effect on popular culture alongside the recordings of singer Marta Kubišová, who became an ikon of that period in Czechoslovakia. This event is a part of upcoming exhibition ‘Eastern Bloc Songs: Party, Pop & Politics’ by Wayne Burrows which will address the question about connections between popular music and political situation in Eastern Bloc Countries during Soviet regime. ‘Invasion night’ is one of five film screening events in collaboration with #uprisingf68 initiative.
