We have had a collaborative friendship with Trinity United Church and we welcome to our pulpit their new pastor, Rev. Roberto Fois. You can read about him in the Did You Know article in this edition of the Buzz. The Christ Presbyterian Church has also been a good friend to BBPC, as over the years our members have walked their labyrinth and joined them for the celebration of World Labyrinth Day. Their church just said goodbye to their pastor, Rev. Susan Rack and are in the midst of determining their future. We are thrilled to be welcoming both congregations to our sanctuary this Sunday. In addition to wel- coming Rev. Fois, we will also be welcoming Iris Chen, the Director of Music for Christ Presbyterian Church. She will be playing the prelude, postlude, and an anthem live from the sanctuary Sunday morning. In addition, we will be sharing the third of three songs gifted to us by Grammy Nominated recording artist, Jennifer Knapp. So please tune in or sign up to worship with us in-person! IRIS CHEN is an established pianist in the NJ area. Her perform- ing career began in her native Taiwan, after she won second prize in the Piano Concerto Competition of The National Taiwan Academy. She then went on to win first prize in the annual Piano Concerto Competition at her undergraduate alma mater, the prestigious Soochow University, which earned her a tour of Taiwan. In the same year as her concerto appear- ances with the Soochow University Orchestra, she was offered scholar- ship by the Piano Fest Music Festival of Long Island, where she had the opportunity to study with two internationally renowned pianists, Sergei Babayan and Paul Schenly. Ms. Chen then proceeded to study with well- known pedagogue Julian Martin, at the Peabody Conservatory of Music of Johns Hopkins University, where she obtained both a Master of Music de- gree and a Graduate Performance Diploma. Ms. Chen has been a pianist and a substitute conductor for the Chinese American Music Ensemble; and accompanies and performs throughout the NJ/NY area. She serves as the Music Director of Christ Presbyterian Church, in Martinsville, NJ. JENNIFER KNAPP is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, author, speaker, and advocate. Her impressive history includes selling over one million albums with her first three releases Kansas (debut 1998, Gold-certified), Lay It Down (2000), and The Way I Am(2001). She has earned four Dove Awards and has two Grammy nominations. The Kansas-born musi- cian has toured the globe with artists such as Jars of Clay and was fea- tured on the Lilith Fair Tour in 1999 and 2010. Knapp received critical ac- claim for her human approach to the divine, with The Los Angeles Times calling her "a rising star" and People Magazine describing her as "an un- commonly literate songwriter." With a considerable fan base and critical and commercial success, Knapp walked away from music in 2002 at the height of her career. After a seven-year hiatus she returned in 2010 with a renewed passion for music showcased in her album Letting Go, which debuted at No. 73 on the Billboard Hot 200 Chart. Set Me Free followed in 2014 on Righteous Babe Records in conjunction with a memoir, Facing the Music: My Story, published by Simon & Schuster. Her 2017 album Love Comes Back Around, produced by Viktor Krauss, pairs her fearless songwriting and strong, expressive voice with Americana style rootsy ar- rangements. As the first major artist in the Christian music world to speak openly about LGBTQ identity, her unique position created opportunities for a national dialogue, in- cluding appearances on Larry King Live and the TEDx stage. In 2012 Knapp founded the non-profit organization Inside Out Faith, through which she continues to speak and perform nationally as an advocate for LGBTQ & faith issues. A true Renaissance woman, Knapp recently completed a mas- ter’s degree in Theological Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School. 2 Volunteers Needed Now that in-person church is once again available (yay!!!!), we need volunteers to serve as greeters/ hosts for the Sunday morning services. The job is pretty simple – take temperatures with an infrared thermometer (no oral secretions involved), ask a few questions to make sure the person is not sick or was with people that might be sick and have the church covenant signed. It also involves clean up following the service that is not likely to take more than 20 minutes or so since there will be two or three greet- ers/hosts at every service. To make in-person church available, we need people to perform these simple but very valuable tasks. Training will be available for those interested and willing. Please let Karen or Judy Wahrenberger ([email protected]) know of your avail- ability. Thank you!!! Over the course of 24-hours, we prayed for our church, community, nation, and world focused on the following eight topics: Heath, Education, Poverty, Food Insecurity, Justice, Racism, Civility, and The Church. It was a meaningful time of connection with God, each other, and those who are struggling. This Sunday, some of those participants will be sharing their insights and experiences in con- versation with Rev. Linda. The vigil is over, but the need for prayer continues. Click here to access the Prayer Vigil Guide w ith information on the spiritual practice of prayer and many suggested items for prayer related to the eight categories listed above. 3 PEB Update On behalf of Friends of PEB, I am excited to announce the restart of the school year in Pakistan! Thanks to you (and those who've joined with you), PEB has made it through the trying COVID-filled past few months. With our school buildings shut down, teachers and staff -- with your special support through FOPEB's COVID Emergency Needs Campaign -- have made spe- cial provisions, reaching out to students who remained at home and continued this vital educational ministry through remote means. Why, we even fed some needy households in the process! Furthermore, in addition to the above, we provided additional educational supplies required for this remote learning to continue, as well as items like water bottles, tarps, computers, and coolers to better enable learning to transpire. On behalf of all those students and households touched by your gener- osity, we extend our deepest thanksgiving to you! As we now re-open the doors to PEB schools -- with new COVID provisions in place -- we thank each of you who have and continue to be such foundational elements in this ministry. Your faithful gifts to Friends of PEB have enabled PEB to weather the forces of chaos and look forward to this new school term.
