Director’s Notes for YOU’RE A GOOD MAN, 2017

Can you name all eight of our current Supreme Court justices? Can you name eight characters from Charles Schulz’ Peanuts? (I’m willing to bet the second part of that question was easier than the first!)

There’s a good reason why You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown (YAGMCB) is one of the Top Ten musicals produced in Middle Schools and High Schools throughout the country every year. There are lessons to be learned.

On the surface, Charles Schulz’ Peanuts seems simple. However, when you dig a little deeper, you'll find it investigates some of life’s most complex questions: How do you maintain hope in the face of disappointment? How do you continue to believe in love if your experience has been painful? What does it mean to be good? What is happiness?

Charlie Brown is the personification of optimism. In the face of adversity, he continues to leap. That’s what makes him our hero. Whether he’s trying to get that kite off the ground, get the game-winning hit for his team, or be the object of affection for the little red-headed girl, he never gives up.

Even the characters who surround him (Lucy, Snoopy, Linus, Schroeder, etc.); though more talented and more popular than he, they too face a loss of confidence from time to time. Yet, by the end of the play, they are all singing about the simple things that make them happy.

The characters in YAGMCB represent the very students who portray them. What young student isn’t filled with self-doubt, fear, and hope? I’d like to think that the message of perseverance will be subconsciously absorbed and applied to whatever issue they may face.

I prefer to use a sports analogy when I say that an ensemble cast is a team. We are all single-mindedly focused on one goal; the successful production of a musical. We put our heads together, overcome obstacles in our path, take responsibility for our individual roles, and persevere to achieve success.

In the end, we find that true happiness is not in our possessions, but in enduring, lasting friendships.

“Happiness is anyone and anything at all that’s loved by you”
