Aoun, Elabbas Benmamoun and Lina Choueiri Excerpt More information 1 Issues in the syntax of Arabic 1.1 The Arabic language(s) Arabic belongs to the Semitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic (Hamito- Semitic) family of languages, which includes languages like Aramaic, Ethiopian, South Arabian, Syriac, and Hebrew. A number of the languages in this group are spoken in the Middle East, the Arabian Peninsula, and Africa. It has been docu- mented that Arabic spread with the Islamic conquests from the Arabian Peninsula and within a few decades, it spread over a wide territory across North Africa and the Middle East. Arabic is now spoken by more than 200 million speakers excluding bilingual speakers (Gordon 2005). Although there is a debate about the history of Arabic (including that of the Standard variety and the spoken dialects) Arabic displays some of the typical characteristics of Semitic languages: root-pattern morphology, broken plurals in nouns, emphatic and glottalized consonants, and a verbal system with prefix and suffix conjugation. 1.1.1 The development of Arabic Classical Arabic evolved from the standardization of the language of the Qur’an and poetry. This standardization became necessary at the time when Arabic became the language of an empire, with the Islamic expansion starting in the seventh century. In addition to Classical Arabic, there were regional spo- ken Arabic varieties. It is a matter of intense debate what the nature of the historical relation between Classical Arabic and the spoken dialects is (Owens 2007). -

Prof. Kath Engebretson Abstract This paper analyses characteristics of the identities of 33 young Maronite adults who worshipped at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church in western Sydney, Australia. The research examined how the young Maronite adults assimilated new experiences (being Australian) into an already existing framework (being Maronite and of Lebanese background). A case study methodology was used and ethnographic methods included semi-structured focus group interviews and in-depth interviews. Grounded theory, applying the constant comparison method, was used for analysis of data, accounting for emerging themes. Participants in the age bracket of 18-25 were selected with varied socio-economic status to reflect the general cohort that attended the Church. After interviewing thirty three participants, saturation point was achieved. No trend emerged in their construction of identity that was dependent upon their age, socio-economic background or gender. Data gathered and collated revealed four emerging and fluid identities that included Australians of Lebanese background, Lebanese, Lebanese-Australian and Australian. The paper examines each identity construct within the multicultural debate, and discusses the factors that contributed to the participants’ identity negotiation. Emerging determinants in identity construction for this cohort included citizenship, culture, family traditions and religious affiliation. Introduction The analysis presented in this paper is drawn from the case study that was conducted among 33 young adult Maronites who worshipped at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Parish in western Sydney. The case study was concerned with both identity and spirituality issues but this paper focuses only on identity construction. -

This study portrays the Lebanese Christian national movement as a social movement with a national agenda struggling to disseminate its conception of the identity of a country within very diverse and hostile societal settings. I concentrate on the creation process by the ethnic entrepreneurs and their construction of the self-image of the Lebanese Christian and the perception of the "other" in the Arab world. I study the rhetoric of the Christian intelligentsia through an examination of their writings and speeches before, during and after the civil war, and the evolution of that rhetoric along the periods of peace and war. The cultural influence and contribution of the Maronite Church to the growth of the Middle East in the 14ᵗʰ–19ᵗʰ centuries The Maronites are proud of their Syriac roots and cultural connections with the West.1 The question arises: in what areas did the Syriac Christian community constitute a bridge between the East and the West? Although not all critical remarks of Kamāl Ṣalībī (b. 1929) on the Maronite view of history are accepted without reservation, his remark that “the awareness of the historic truth (wa’y al-ḥaqīqa at-tārīḫīya) constitutes the ultimate foundation for the possibility to build a healthy society”2 seems valuable. The postulate of the verification of over-interpretation is always valid, nevertheless the discussion: what is a myth (al-asāṭīr) and what is the truth in the history of Lebanon continues.3 The analysis of the cultural heritage of the Maronites will let us establish to which degree the activities of the Maronites from the 15ᵗʰ till the 19ᵗʰ centuries prepared many processes in the Middle East in the modern times. In response to that, the Sasanian Great King Khosrow ii (590–628), who had been helped by Maurice in 591 to regain his throne from the usurper Bahram, launched a war of retribution against Byzantium. In 604 taking advantage of the revolt of the patrikios Nars- es against Phokas, he captured the city of Dara. By 609, the Persians had com- pleted the conquest of Byzantine Mesopotamia with the capitulation of Edes- sa.1 A year earlier, in 608, the Exarch of Carthage Herakleios the Elder rose in revolt against Phokas. His nephew Niketas campaigned against Egypt while his son, also named Herakleios, led a fleet against Constantinople. Herakleios managed to enter the city and kill Phokas. He was crowned emperor on Octo- ber 5, 610.2 Ironically, three days later on October 8, 610, Antioch, the greatest city of the Orient, surrendered to the Persians who took full advantage of the Byzantine civil strife.3 A week later Apameia, another great city in North Syria, came to terms with the Persians. Emesa fell in 611. Despite two Byzantine counter at- tacks, one led by Niketas in 611 and another led by Herakleios himself in 613, the Persian advance seemed unstoppable. Damascus surrendered in 613 and a year later Caesarea and all other coastal towns of Palestine fell as well. -

TOURISM AND RECREATION Tourism in Lebanon has traditionally been urban based, i.e., most tourists head for other urban areas and poles such as beach resorts, country clubs, casinos, and restaurants. In recent years, however, tourism and recreation are increasingly practiced in natural settings such as forests, protected areas, valleys, and mountain areas. Traditional tourism is generally more destructive, as more land is used for accommodation (chalets, mountain resorts, hotels, furnished apartments). Moreover, new accommodation facilities in remote areas require access roads and other infrastructure (e.g., water supply, wastewater network, electricity). While nature tourism is less resource demanding, it could generate added sources of pressure on the environment if poorly managed. Over the past few decades, a new form of writing has emerged across the Arab world. Known as Arabizi, it is a type of Romanized Arabic that uses Latin characters instead of Arabic script. It is mainly used by youth in technology-related contexts such as social media and texting, and has made many older Arabic speakers fear that more standard forms of Arabic may be in danger because of its use. Prior work on Arabizi suggests that although it is used frequently on social media, its orthography is not yet standardized (Palfreyman and Khalil, 2003; Abdel-Ghaffar et al., 2011). Therefore, this thesis aimed to examine orthographic variation in Romanized Lebanese Arabic, which has rarely been studied as a Romanized dialect. It was interested in how often Arabizi is used on Twitter in Lebanon and the extent of its orthographic variation. Using Twitter data collected from Beirut, tweets were analyzed to discover the most common orthographic variants in Arabizi for each Arabic letter, as well as the overall rate of Arabizi use. Results show that Arabizi was not used as frequently as hypothesized on Twitter, probably because of its low prestige and increased globalization.
