The Boston Red Sox Tuesday, December 1, 2020 * The Boston Globe MLB Draft League launching wooden-bat league for top draft prospects Matthew Doherty Major League Baseball is launching a wooden-bat league for top prospects who are eligible for the MLB Draft, it announced Monday. The MLB Draft League, which will be operated by the scouting service Prep Baseball Report, has five member teams and is discussing adding a sixth team in the coming weeks. Teams will play a 68-game regular season from late May to mid-August, split into two parts. The first half of the season will showcase the draft-eligible high school, college, and junior college players. After an All-Star break centered around the MLB Draft (July 11-13), teams will restock their rosters with the top undrafted players for the second half of the season. Paul Toboni, the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Red Sox, said he’s unsure whether top prospects will choose to play in the MLB Draft League. The pandemic’s effect on the spring season will also play a factor, according to Toboni. “I think it’s too early to tell,” said Toboni. “It’s tough to predict the caliber of prospect that will choose to play in this league. And I’m stating the obvious here, but how the pandemic affects spring seasons will ultimately have an impact on prospects’ willingness to play as well.” The college baseball regular season ends in mid-May and the College World Series is scheduled from June 19 - June 30 this season.

The Boston Red Sox Sunday, May 9, 2021 * The Boston Globe Xander Bogaerts continues to show why he’s among the game’s best shortstops in Red Sox’ rout of the Orioles Julian McWilliams BALTIMORE — In an era defined by talented shortstops, and in a league that has seen talented players such as Francisco Lindor and Fernando Tatis rise to the sport’s forefront,, Xander Bogaerts’s has made his own ascent, his talent propelling him into the same strata as his well-healed and handsomely-paid counterparts. Manager Alex Cora spoke to Bogaerts’s supreme skill and competitive fervor ahead of the Red Sox’ series with the New York Mets a couple of weeks ago, adding his shortstop’s calm demeanor, his lack of flashiness in the field can, at times, downplay what Bogaerts actually brings to the game. Yet, with the season Bogaerts has had to this point, and the career he’s fashioned with the Red Sox, that should no longer be the case. In the Sox’ 11-6 win against the Orioles Saturday at Camden Yards, Bogaerts’s imprints were all over the outcome. Bogaerts went 3 for 4 on the night, hitting a two-run home run to left in the top of the sixth inning to stretch the Sox’ lead to 11-2. at the time. In the bottom half of that frame, Bogaerts flashed on defense, making a back-handed stab of a sharply- struck Maikel Franco rocket to the hole. He initiated what ended up being an inning-ending double play that enabled Red Sox starter Garrett Richards to get out of a jam.

The Boston Red Sox Tuesday, September 10, 2019 * The Boston Globe Healthy sign: David Ortiz delivers first pitch Julian McWilliams In a wild 24 hours for the Red Sox that centered around the firing of president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski late Sunday night, for a moment, the dark clouds that hovered this year over Fenway Park cleared. David Ortiz made his first public appearance Monday evening to throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the Red Sox’ series finale against the Yankees. Former Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek caught the throw. Three months to the day since he was shot in the Dominican Republic, Ortiz jogged onto the field after he was described by the park announcer as “the symbol of resilience, strength, triumph and love . our one and only, Big Papi.” Afterward, Ortiz addressed the crowd in front of the pitcher’s mound. “Good evening,” said Ortiz, who was met with cheers. “First of all, I want to thank God, for giving me a second opportunity of my life and being able to be here with all of you. I want to thank the Red Sox — my real family — they always have been there for me, supporting me no matter where I’m at. They were the first ones to support me. Thank you very much. “I want to thank all of you for all the prayers. I want to thank my former teammates for being there for me also. All of them came over to check up on your boy. “Also, I want to thank the Yankees, allowing my boys to come over and check up on Big Papi.

The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, December 30, 2020 * The Boston Globe Jackie Bradley Jr. is taking a patient approach in free agency Julian McWilliams Sleep is at a minimum for outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. these days. On Dec. 3, Bradley and his wife, Erin, received an early Christmas gift when they welcomed their second child, Jackie Bradley III, into the world. That has been Bradley’s main focus, even though he’s a free agent in a market that has been extremely slow to this point. “I’ve always been, you know, of the mind-set that everything will work out the way it should,” Bradley said. “It’s honestly been about being home with my family at the moment, especially with a newborn, so we’re kind of adjusting and adapting.” Bradley has taken a measured and patient approach to this free agency period. He also has kept a realistic one. Bradley knows the pandemic and the uncertainty surrounding 2021 could make this even more of a drawn-out process. “Writers, players, whoever it may be — owners — kind of knew it was going to be a slow offseason,” Bradley said. “I feel like everybody is kind of trying to get more information about what’s going to go on with the pandemic. Making sure that everybody’s protected in a certain way. So we ... forecast the flow, but it’ll pick up when it does.” In Bradley’s case, things might start to pick up when George Springer, the most coveted free agent outfielder, signs. But Bradley is garnering a decent amount of interest.
