The performances take place Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, December 29 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, December 30 at 8:00 p.m.; and Tuesday, January 3 at 7:30 p.m. Wynton Marsalis’s The Jungle is the first of The New York Commissions, in which the Philharmonic is celebrating its long history as an active commissioner and New York City cultural institution by commissioning works on New York–inspired themes from New York– based composers with strong ties to the Orchestra, on the occasion of the Philharmonic’s 175th anniversary season. -

Jonathan David Rowsell Doctor of Musical Arts Faculty of Music University of Toronto 2018 Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of Arnold Jacobs on the pedagogical approaches of prominent tuba teachers in Canada. Nine tuba teachers from different Canadian universities participated in this study. Each participant was interviewed digitally using Skype or FaceTime and asked nine questions designed to understand their personal pedagogical approach and how it relates to Arnold Jacobs. These questions cover important pedagogical ideas including sound concept, breathing, articulation, and embouchure. Arnold Jacobs is considered to be one of the most influential brass pedagogues in history. His method of teaching, referred to as Song and Wind, is a pedagogical concept frequently implemented in contemporary applied tuba teaching. The interview findings of this study demonstrate that the Arnold Jacobs legacy is very present in Canadian tuba pedagogy. The approaches to articulation and sound concept demonstrated by the interview subjects are consistently Jacobs inspired. The approaches to breathing and embouchure, however, are much more varied. Although these elements are not as tightly embedded in the Jacobs pedagogical ii approach, the results of the study demonstrate that the majority of the interview subjects are fully aware of the ways in which their current approaches have been adapted. -

He began piano lessons at the age of seven and continued with the study of harmony, counterpoint, analysis and composition as a teenager with Françoise Gangloff-Levéchin, Christian Manen and Louis Saguer. He then entered the Paris Conservatory where he studied with a number of composers including Claude Ballif, Marius Constant, Serge Nigg, and Michel Philippot. He attended the French Academy in Rome and after returning to Paris, he worked as head of chamber music for Radio France. He has since concentrated on composing. He has composed orchestral, chamber, instrumental, vocal and choral works. His unrecorded Symphonies are: Nos. 1, Op. 11 (1983-4), 2, Op. 22 (1986-8), 3, Op. 33 "Sinfonia da Requiem" (1988-94) and 5 , Op. 55 "Concerto for Orchestra" (1996-7).There is also a Sinfonietta for String Orchestra, Op. 72 (2001) and a Sinfonia Concertante for Orchestra, Op. 83a (1995-96/rév.2006) . Dr. Chen has received music degrees from the Beijing Central Conservatory (BA and MA) and Columbia University in the City of New York (DMA). She is the recipient of the prestigious Charles Ives Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2001-04), and has served as the Lorena Searcey Cravens/Millsap/Missouri Distinguished Professor in Music Composition at the Conservatory of the University of Missouri-Kansas City since 1998. Commissioned by the National Wind Ensemble Consortium Group, and premiered by the Hart Wind Ensemble at Carnegie Hall, Chen Yi's Dragon Rhyme for symphonic band is in two movements. -

100 Years of Extraordinary Historical Highlights from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Archives 1910s 1915 – Through a $6,000 grant from the city of Baltimore, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is founded as a branch of the city’s Department of Municipal Music, making it the only major American orchestra to be fully funded as a municipal agency. 1916 – On February 11, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performs its inaugural concerts to a standing- room-only crowd at The Lyric, under the direction of Music Director Gustav Strube. All three concerts comprising the first season at the Lyric are sold out. 1920s 1924 – On February 16, the BSO hosts its first children’s concert. The Baltimore Symphony youth concert series is the first to be established by an American orchestra. 1926 – The Baltimore Symphony makes its initial broadcast performance on WBAL Radio. 1930s 1930 - George Siemonn becomes the second music director of the orchestra. He conducts his opening concert, with the musicians now numbering 83, on November 23. 1935 - In late February, George Siemonn reluctantly resigns as music director and is replaced by Ernest Schelling. Forty-four musicians apply for the position. Schelling is well-known for his children’s concert series at Carnegie Hall. 1937 - Sara Feldman and Vivienne Cohn become the first women to join the Baltimore Symphony. The older members of the orchestra are supportive, but union members picket the hall with signs saying, “Unfair to Men,” which is reported in the New York Times. 1937 - Ernest Schelling becomes ill and is replaced by Werner Janssen. The dynamic young conductor and his wife, the celebrated film star Ann Harding, receive an enthusiastic response when they arrive in Baltimore. -

LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER July 18, 2002, 8:00 p.m. on PBS Lincoln Center Festival/New York Philharmonic Kurt Masur's 75th Birthday & Farewell "Thank you, Kurt Masur" has been the season-long motto of the New York Philharmonic. Indeed, there is much for which to thank Mr. Masur. His 11 seasons as the Orchestra's Music Director have seen a dramatic improvement in the Philharmonic's performance standards as well as a discipline in its playing that have laid to rest the one-time canard that the players of the New York Philharmonic are an unruly bunch. Concert after concert during the Masur years the Philharmonic has shown that it can stand comparison with the greatest orchestras anywhere in the world. The 2001-2002 season has been Mr. Masur's final one as Music Director, though he will return for a number of weeks next season as a Guest Conductor. To put the seal on the Masur tenure, as well as to celebrate the Maestro's 75th birthday, a special concert by the New York Philharmonic has been scheduled in Avery Fisher Hall for Thursday evening, July 18. Characteristically, Mr. Masur has devised a program that beams a spotlight on a number of the orchestra's principal players. Happily, we'll be in Avery Fisher Hall that evening with our cameras and microphones to bring that concert to you live in our continuing Live From Lincoln Center series. The concert will begin with a demonstration of the corporate excellence of the players-the Overture to Candide by Leonard Bernstein (himself a former Music Director of the Philharmonic), performed by the orchestra without conductor! I remember a similar conductorless Candide Overture performance as a memorial to Bernstein in Carnegie Hall with musicians from several of the orchestras with whom he had particularly close associations, among them the Philharmonic, of course, as well as the Boston Symphony, the London Symphony, the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, and the Vienna Philharmonic.
