Obviously, these items would be a good gift idea for any occasion year-round, as well as a gift for yourself! We do not include many, if any at all, single CDs in the guide. Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. Of course, you can always look though our back issues to see what came out in 2017 (and prior years), but none of us would want to attempt to decide which CDs would be a fitting ad- dition to this guide. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. These are in no particular order in terms of importance or release dates. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 3, 2019 San Francisco, CA 42Nd Annual Haight-Ashbury Street Fair Announces 2019 Line-Up - Sponsored by COOKIES
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 3, 2019 San Francisco, CA 42nd Annual Haight-Ashbury Street Fair Announces 2019 Line-Up - sponsored by COOKIES. The Haight-Ashbury Street Fair is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the cultural and historical significance of this district by sponsoring the annual community celebration and in supporting community programs that incorporate the neighborhood’s spirit of diversity, cooperation and humanism. Donate here to keep the tradition going! Since 1978, we have produced the annual, one-day street fair that allows the community to celebrate the cultural contributions this district has made to San Francisco. This festival provides the neighborhood with the opportunity to showcase the variety of mercantile, cultural and community services available in this district. By creating a festival atmosphere, the street fair creates a stage for many artisans, musicians, artists and performers to present their work to the public. And, as a community service, HASF enables many non-profit organizations a chance to conduct outreach campaigns. Our activities are not limited to a one-day festival. We also sponsor other community events such as the annual Halloween Hootenanny that provides a safe environment for the children of the neighborhood to celebrate the spirit of Halloween. We hope (intend) to promote and create many more programs and events that help serve the cultural needs of the Haight-Ashbury and anyone else that would like to join in on the fun. The 42nd Annual Haight Street Festival takes place Sunday, June 09, 2019, 11 - 5:30 pm. The 2019 Lineup has brought in veteran Edward Jennings of Haight Street’s historic i-Beam to curate an unforgettable line-up with collaborations and surprise guest appearances not to be missed. -

This new Blues based CD entitled “American Trails” by virtuoso guitarist/vocalist Pascal Bokar connects the American musical traditions of the South with the original 4 string instrument from Mali West Africa, Ngoni or banjo and the West African balafon (ancestor of the xylophone) in a powerful rhythmic and multi sonic contemporary gumbo that one has yet to discover. The album was recently awarded Deep Mission's Best Of 2019 on KALX Radio Berkeley.and PICA Netherlands HIT-Tracks Top 100 "High Five" Highly Recommended Albums of the Week, and mentioned on Top Hitz UK. “American Trails” deepens Pascal Bokar’s exploration of the Blues in his “AfroBlueGrazz” concept with an opening ear-popping version of Blues Great Otis Spann’s composition “The Blues Don’t Like Nobody” in a duet with vocalist Paula Harris and some blistering scat/guitar singing. Click the image below to see a live video! The first track of the album is followed by the sultry ballad “I Wanna See You in My Dreams” also featuring Paula Harris. -

Funding for the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Program NEA Jazz Master interview was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. DAVE LIEBMAN NEA Jazz Master (2011) Interviewee: Dave Liebman (September 4, 1946 - ) Interviewer: Bill Kirchner with recording engineer Ken Kimery Date: January 4-5, 2011 Repository: Archives Center, National Museum of American History Description: Transcript, 166 pp. Levy: Today is January 4th, 2011. I’m Bill Kirchner. We’re here in my home in South Orange, New Jersey, and we’re going to be talking with NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman. Let’s start out with the most obvious thing. What’s your full name, Dave? Liebman: No middle name. In fact, when I was about 13 or something, I said, “How come I don’t have a middle name?” to my mother, and she said, “Choose one.” In those days I was enamored by all the tough guys in the neighborhood, who were Vinny, Vito, Tony, Tito. I said, “Can I do Tito or Vinny?” She said, “No, I don’t think so.” So that was the end of any middle name. Nobody in our family has middle names. This is a rarity, I guess. Kirchner: And just so we get the formal stuff out of the way, you were born what day? Liebman: September 4th, 1946, Brooklyn, New York. Kirchner: In a hospital? At home? Liebman: Brooklyn Jewish Hospital. Kirchner: What were your parents’ names? Liebman: Francis. Her maiden name was Gatina – Hungarian, Alsace, a little German, and my father was a Liebman. They were from Belarus, White Russian Minsk, around For additional information contact the Archives Center at 202.633.3270 or [email protected] 1 that area. -
