During 2013 I believe we made substantial progress in all these areas, and contributed to the changing national climate for reform. Our research documented both disturbing trends and signs of hope. Our analysis of life imprisonment uncovered the striking fact that one of every nine people in prison is serving such a sentence. We also identified an intriguing shift in the racial dynamics of incarceration, particularly among women, noting that the black/white disparity ratio had been cut in half in the first decade of this century.
