transactions on aerospace research 4(261) 2020, pp.81-106 DOI: 10.2478/tar-2020-0023 eISSN 2545-2835 effectiveness of the compound helicopter configuration in rotorcraft performance increase Jarosław stanisławski Retired doctor of technical sciences [email protected] • ORCID: 0000-0003-1629-4632 abstract The article presents the results of calculations applied to compare flight envelopes of varying helicopter configurations. Performance of conventional helicopter with the main and tail rotors, in the case of compound helicopter, can be improved by applying wings and pusher propellers which generate an additional lift and horizontal thrust. The simplified model of a helicopter structure, consisting of a stiff fuselage and the main rotor treated as a stiff disk, is applied for evaluation of the rotorcraft performance and the required range of control system deflections. The more detailed model of deformable main rotor blades, applying the Galerkin method, is used to calculate rotor loads and blade deformations in defined flight states. The calculations of simulated flight states are performed considering data of a hypothetical medium class helicopter with the take-off mass of 6,000kg. In the case of both of the helicopter configurations, the articulated main rotor hub is taken under consideration. According to the Galerkin method, the elastic blade model allows to compute blade deformations as a combination of the blade bending and torsional eigen modes. Introduction of additional wing and pusher propellers allows to increase the range of operational speed over 300 km/h. Results of the simulation are presented as time- runs of rotor loads and blade deformations and in a form of disk distribution plots of rotor parameters. -

- Issue No. 181 No. 190, July 6, 1972 The Pound Afloat: The reason given for the U.K.'s decision to float sterling was the weight of international short-term capital movements which, despite concerted intervention from the Bank of England and European central banks, had necessitated massive sup port operations. The U.K. is anxious that the rate should quickly o.s move to a "realistic" level, at or around the old parity of %2. 40 - r,/, .• representing an effective 8% devaluation against the dollar. A w formal devaluation coupled with a wage freeze was urged by the :,I' Bank of England, but this would be politically embarrassing in the }t!IJ light of the U.K. Chancellor's repeated statements that the pound was "not at an unrealistic rate." The decision to float has been taken in spite of a danger that this may provoke an international or European monetary crisis. European markets tend to consider sterling as the dollar's first line of defense and, although the U.S. Treasury reaffirmed the Smithsonian Agreement, there are fears throughout Europe that pressure on the U.S. currency could disrupt the exchange rate re lationship established last December. On the Continent, the Dutch and Belgians have put forward a scheme for a joint float of Common Market currencies against the dollar. It will not easily be implemented, since speculation in the ex change markets has pushed the various EEC countries in different directions. The Germans have been under pressure to revalue, the Italians to devalue. Total opposition to a Community float is ex pected from France (this would sever the ties between the franc and gold), and the French also are adamant that Britain should re affirm its allegiance to the European monetary agreement and return to a fixed parity. -

01/21 UAS – Low Hanging Fruit India Still to Pluck Air Marshal Anil Chopra PVSM AVSM VM VSM (Retd) Director General, CAPS 22 April 2021 Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) began making unmanned aerial system (UAS) with the Fluffy target drone in 1970s, which was replaced by the reusable, subsonic, pilotless target aircraft Lakshya that first flew in 1985. Around 30 were produced and operated by all the services. The advanced version Lakshya-II was flight-tested in January 2012. In March 2017, Air Force version of Lakshya-II was flight tested. The Army-centric Nishant is a multi-mission UAS with day/night capability for battlefield surveillance and targeting, and was first flown in August 1996. DRDO claimed it equivalent of IAI’s Searcher. Finally only four were built. A wheeled version of the Nishant UAS, named “Panchi” is known to be under development. There are a large number of DRDO UAS projects since 1985, but what really counts is, what gets inducted into the Armed Forces. That number after nearly 45 years should have been much higher. DRDO’s Rustom Series Rustom-1 was evolved from Burt Rutan’s Long-EZ with 250 km range, for visual and radar surveillance. It was to be a tactical UAV with endurance of 12 hours, and made its first flight in November 2009. Rustom-H, is a larger UAV was with flight endurance of over 24 hours. TAPAS-BH- 201 (Rustom-2) Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAV has been derived from the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) LCRA (Light Canard Research Aircraft), and is meant to supplement the Heron UAVs in service. -

1 CADET’S HAND BOOK (NAVY) SPECIALISED SUBJECT 2 Preface 1. National Cadet Corps (NCC), came into existence, on 15 July 1948 under an Act of Parliament. Over the years, NCC has spread its activities and values, across the length and breadth of the country; in schools and colleges, in almost all the districts of India. It has attracted millions of young boys and girls, to the very ethos espoused by its motto, “unity and discipline” and molded them into disciplined and responsible citizens of the country.
