There are two distinct points of view that one may adopt. On one hand, our intuitive ideas of randomness are intimately tied to the notion of sampling a realization of a random variable. Thus, given a random number generator, one may build a random Hermitian matrix, M 2 Her(n), by choosing its real diagonal and complex upper-triangular entries independently at random. It is conventional to assume further that all the diagonal entries have the same law, and that all the upper-triangular entries have the same law. For example, we may assume that the entries on the diagonal are ±1 with probability 1=2, and that the upper-triangular entries are ±1 ± i with probability 1=4. It is also conventional to have the variance of the diagonal entries to be twice that of the off-diagonal entries. Random matrices of this kind, are said to be drawn from Wigner ensembles. On the other hand, one may adopt a more analytic view. The Hilbert- Pn ¯ Schmidt inner product of two Hermitian matrices, Tr(MN) = j;k=1 MjkNjk, defines a natural metric Tr(dM 2) and volume form DM on Her(n) (see Lec- ture 2). In this text, unless otherwise stated, kMk = pTr M ∗M). Thus, each positive function p : Her(n) ! [0; 1) that decays sufficiently fast as kMk ! 1, may be normalized to define a probability measure. A fundamental example is the law of the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) 1 − 1 Tr(M 2) pGUE(M)DM = e 2 DM: (1.1.1) Zn Here Zn is a normalization constant that ensures pGUE is a probability density (we use the same notation for different ensembles; thus the numerical value of Zn must be inferred from the context). The above notions extend to ensembles of matrices from Symm(n) and Quart(n). The notion of invariance in each case is distinct: for Symm(n), the natural transformation is M 7! The standard Gaussian ensembles in these cases are termed GOE (the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble) and GSE (the Gaussian Symplectic Ensemble), and they are normalized as follows: 1 − 1 Tr(M 2) 1 − Tr(M 2) pGOE(M)dM = e 4 dM; pGSE(M)dM = e DM: (1.1.4) Zn Zn The differing normalizations arise from the different volume forms on Symm(n), Her(n) and Quart(n) as will be explained in Lecture 2. For now, let us note that the densities for all the Gaussian ensembles may be written in the unified form β −1 − Tr(M 2) Zn(β) e 4 (1.1.5) where β = 1,2 and 4 for GOE, GUE and GSE respectively. While it is true that there are no other ensembles that respect fundamental physical invariance (in the sense of Dyson), many fundamental results of random matrix theory can be established for all β > 0. These results follow from the existence of ensembles of tridiagonal matrices, whose eigenvalues have a joint distribution that interpolates those of the β = 1,2 and 4 ensembles to all β > 0 [8]. 1.2 The main limit theorems The basic question in random matrix theory is the following: what can one say about the statistics of the eigenvalues of a random matrix? For example, what is the probability that the largest eigenvalue lies below a threshold? Or, what is the probability that there are no eigenvalues in a given interval? The difficulty here is that even if the entries of a random matrix are independent, the eigenvalues are strongly coupled. Gaussian ensembles play a very special, and important, role in random ma- trix theory. These are the only ensembles that are both Wigner and invari- ant (see Theorem 18 below). Pioneering, ingenious calculations by Dyson [9], 1.2. THE MAIN LIMIT THEOREMS 9 Gaudin and Mehta [26, 25], on the Gaussian ensembles served to elucidate the fundamental limit theorems of random matrix theory. In this section we outline these theorems, assuming always that the ensemble is GUE. Our purpose is to explain the form of the main questions (and their answers) in the simplest setting. All the results hold in far greater generality as is briefly outlined at the end of this section. By the normalization (1.1.1), a GUE matrix has independent standard nor- mal entries on its diagonal (mean zero, variance 1). The off-diagonal entries have mean zero and variance 1=2. We denote the ordered eigenvalues of the GUE matrix by λ1 ≤ λ2 ≤ : : : λn. A fundamental heuristic for GUE matrices (that will be proven later, and mayp be easily simulated) isp that the largestp and smallest eigenvalues have size O( n).

    New Results on the Spectral Density of Random Matrices Timothy Rogers Department of Mathematics, King’s College London, July 2010 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy: Applied Mathematics Abstract This thesis presents some new results and novel techniques in the studyof thespectral density of random matrices. Spectral density is a central object of interest in random matrix theory, capturing the large-scale statistical behaviour of eigenvalues of random matrices. For certain ran- dom matrix ensembles the spectral density will converge, as the matrix dimension grows, to a well-known limit. Examples of this include Wigner’s famous semi-circle law and Girko’s elliptic law. Apart from these, and a few other cases, little else is known. Two factors in particular can complicate the analysis enormously - the intro- duction of sparsity (that is, many entries being zero) and the breaking of Hermitian symmetry. The results presented in this thesis extend the class of random matrix en- sembles for which the limiting spectral density can be computed to include various sparse and non-Hermitian ensembles. Sparse random matrices are studied through a mathematical analogy with statistical mechanics. Employing the cavity method, a technique from the field of disordered systems, a system of equations is derived which characterises the spectral density of a given sparse matrix. Analytical and numerical solutions to these equations are ex- plored, as well as the ensemble average for various sparse random matrix ensembles. For the case of non-Hermitian random matrices, a result is presented giving a method 1 for exactly calculating the spectral density of matrices under a particular type of per- turbation.

Established supervised learning algo- rithms inject randomness into the construction of the individual base learners in an effort to promote diversity within the resulting ensembles. An undesirable side effect of this ap- proach is that it generally also reduces the accuracy of the base learners. In this paper, we introduce a method that is simple to implement yet general and effective in improv- ing ensemble diversity with only modest impact on the accuracy of the individual base learners. By randomly rotating the feature space prior to inducing the base learners, we achieve favorable aggregate predictions on standard data sets compared to state of the art ensemble methods, most notably for tree-based ensembles, which are particularly sensitive to rotation. In this paper we revisit the problem of finding an orthogonal similarity transformation that puts an n × n matrix A in a block upper-triangular form that reveals its Jordan structure at a particular eigenvalue λ0. The obtained form in fact reveals the dimensions of the null spaces of i (A − λ0I) at that eigenvalue via the sizes of the leading diagonal blocks, and from this the Jordan structure at λ0 is then easily recovered. The method starts from a Hessenberg form that already reveals several properties of the Jordan structure of A. It then updates the Hessenberg form in an efficient way to transform it to a block-triangular form in O(mn2) floating point operations, where m is the total multiplicity of the eigenvalue.     RANDOM MATRIX ENSEMBLES ASSOCIATED TO COMPACT SYMMETRIC SPACES EDUARDO DUENEZ˜ Abstract. We introduce random matrix ensembles that corre- spond to the infinite families of irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces of type I. In particular, we recover the Circular Orthogo- nal and Symplectic Ensembles of Dyson, and find other families of (unitary, orthogonal and symplectic) ensembles of Jacobi type. We discuss the universal and weakly universal features of the global and local correlations of the levels in the bulk and at the “hard” edge of the spectrum (i. e., at the “central points” 1 on the unit circle). Previously known results are extended, and± we find new simple formulas for the Bessel Kernels that describe the local cor- relations at a hard edge. 1. Introduction Local correlations between eigenvalues of various ensembles of ran- dom unitary, orthogonal or symplectic matrices, in the limit when their size tends to infinity, are known to exhibit universal behavior in the bulk of the spectrum. Dyson’s “Threefold Way” [14] predicts that this behavior is to be expected universally in the bulk of the spec- trum, depending only on the symmetry type of the ensemble (unitary, orthogonal or symplectic). We find a remarkable agreement be- tween the theoretical prediction (based on the assumption that the correlation matrix is random) and empirical data concerning the density of eigenvalues associated to the time series of the different stocks of the S&P500 (or other major markets). Finally, we give a specific example to show how this idea can be sucessfully implemented for improving risk management. Empirical correlation matrices are of great importance for risk management and asset allocation. The probability of large losses for a certain portfolio or option book is dominated by correlated moves of its different constituents – for example, a position which is simultaneously long in stocks and short in bonds will be risky because stocks and bonds usually move in opposite directions in crisis periods.
