by Tom Montgomery Editor

A Sanilac County resident and convicted sex crime offender remains lodged in the Tuscola County Jail on a $700,000 cash bond after he was formally charged with sexually assaulting and injuring a woman in the parking lot of a Mayville bar and restaurant last weekend. Tuscola County Prosecutor Mark E. Reene authorized the charges Tuesday against Jeffrey Innes Wendorf, 57, of Decker. At the time of Wendorf’s arrest and arraignment, Reene and Tuscola County Sheriff’s Department investigators emphasized the case did not appear to be related to an alleged abduction and assault that was reported a week earlier in Tuscola County’s Wells Township. Two days later, Reene announced that the earlier attack had turned out to be a hoax (see related story, this page). Wendorf is charged with kidnapping, which carries a maximum life term in prison. He is also charged with unlawful imprisonment, a 15-year felony; assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder (felonious Honoring local heroes... assault), a 10-year felony; criminal sexual conduct, second degree, a five- year felony; and aggravated assault, which carries a maximum penalty of CASS CITY Junior-Senior High School students and staff hosted several area one year in jail. veterans Friday morning – Veterans Day – during an annual program at the The case stems from an attack on a 31-year-old female victim during the early morning hours of Nov. 6 in the parking lot at the Sunset school, where the morning began with a flag raising ceremony. Investigators say a woman who reported being abducted and sexually assaulted in Tuscola County’s Wells Township Oct. 30 lied. The report was declared a hoax last Wednesday by the Michigan State Police and Tuscola County Prosecutor Mark E. Reene. Reene along with First Lt. Todd Mapes, commander of the Michigan State Police post in Caro, issued a joint news release Thursday, saying the alleged incident was fabri - cated by the alleged victim, an adult female who reported she had been abducted from the area of Riley Road, between Pierce and East Dayton County voter turnout tops 64 percent roads, between 3 and 5 p.m. “The individual indicated she had stopped to assist a stranded motorist and by Tom Montgomery while Democratic challenger Hillary winners included two incumbents. was forced into a vehicle. PAGE EIGHT CASS CITY CHRONICLE - WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2016 CASS CITY, MICHIGAN Kranz brings “hero wreaths” to Thumb

Wreaths Across America Day is set for Saturday, Dec. 17, and Kranz Funeral Home owner Debra Kranz is encouraging area residents to honor their own heroes this year. “WAA began as the Arlington Wreath Project started by Morrill Worcester in 1992 with the donation and laying of 5,000 Christmas wreaths (at) Arlington National Cemetery. It was relatively obscure until 2005 when a photo of the stones adorned with wreaths and covered in snow circulated around the internet,” explained Mark Davis, administrator Veterans and Family Memorial Care. “The project received national attention,” Davis said. “In 2006, over 150 state and national cemeteries held wreath laying ceremonies simultaneously. By 2008, over 300 locations held wreath laying ceremonies in every state, Puerto Rico and 24 overseas cemeteries.” The effort growth could be seen in more than 100,000 wreaths being placed on veterans’ graves, with 60,000-plus volunteers participating. “Now the opportunity to adorn every veteran’s grave has been made avail - able to (this) community no matter what local cemetery your hero is buried in,” Davis said. “This is made possible through the efforts of Kranz Funeral Home in conjunction with the nearly 1,000 Veterans and Family Memorial Care funeral home providers across America.” Area residents are invited to honor loved ones who served in the military and are buried at any local cemetery by sponsoring a $15 wreath to adorn their grave now through Thursday, Dec. 1. Orders may be placed by calling Kranz Funeral Home at (989) 872-2195. “WAA reaches out to thousands of children each year with the message of ‘Remember, Honor and Teach’. The importance of honoring each fallen serviceman/woman as an individual is stressed,” Davis said. “The wreath laying is now held each year on the second Saturday of December and was unanimously voted by the U.S. Congress as “Wreaths Across America™ Day”. By offering sponsorships to the public, Wreaths Across America hopes that one day every veteran’s resting place will be adorned with a FRIDAY’S Veterans Day wreath for the holiday season.” program at the junior- senior high school fea - Decker man charged in attack tured student speakers, a Continued from page one. special musical number plete the identification,” he added. by a group of elementary “It prevented another victim from being attacked.” A probable cause hearing in the case was scheduled for Monday, Nov. 21, students, and a word at 8:15 a.m., with a preliminary examination slated for Monday, Nov. 28, at from Cass City VFW 8:30 a.m., also in district court. Brigham has been charged with several felonies punishable by up to life in prison, including kidnapping - child endangerment, kidnapping and six counts of criminal sexual conduct - first degree, along with 11 counts of criminal sexual conduct - second degree, another felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
