Episcopal Church Style Guide The official name of the church is The Episcopal Church. When writing about the Episcopal Church, please follow these guidelines: * In the first reference, the full name of the church is preferred: The Episcopal Church. * When referring to church members, the term “Episcopalians” is preferred. We elect a Presiding Bishop, who is our chief pastor and primate of the church. Chosen by the House of Bishops from one of its members, the Presiding Bishop serves for nine years, or until normal retirement age, if that occurs first. In formal usage, he or she is known as “The Most Reverend”,” usually abbreviated to “The Most Rev.” His or her first name (or preferred forename) is always used, together with an initial if applicable (e.g., “The Most Rev. John A. Smith”, or “The Most Rev. A. John Smith”). All other bishops should be addressed as above, but using the form “The Rt. Rev.” Priests and deacons are referred to as “The Rev.” Our church is organized into dioceses, and there is at least one diocese in each state. However, some states have two or more dioceses. For example, we have a Diocese of New Jersey, but in the northern part of the state there is a Diocese of Newark. Likewise, there is a Diocese of Texas, but there are several other dioceses in that state. The Bishop with jurisdiction of a diocese is usually known as the “diocesan bishop”, and is sometimes known as the “Ordinary.” He or she may have other bishops to assist, who are referred to as “bishops suffragan” and are elected in the same way that bishops are, by representatives of the members of the diocese. -

John Thomas Mullock: What His Books Reveal Ágnes Juhász-Ormsby The Episcopal Library of St. John’s is among the few nineteenth- century libraries that survive in their original setting in the Atlantic provinces, and the only one in Newfoundland and Labrador.1 It was established by John Thomas Mullock (1807–69), Roman Catholic bishop of Newfoundland and later of St. John’s, who in 1859 offered his own personal collection of “over 2500 volumes as the nucleus of a Public Library.” The Episcopal Library in many ways differs from the theological libraries assembled by Mullock’s contemporaries.2 When compared, for example, to the extant collection of the Catholic bishop of Victoria, Charles John Seghers (1839–86), whose life followed a similar pattern to Mullock’s, the division in the founding collection of the Episcopal Library between the books used for “private” as opposed to “public” theological study becomes even starker. Seghers’s books showcase the customary stock of a theological library with its bulky series of manuals of canon law, collections of conciliar and papal acts and bullae, and practical, dogmatic, moral theological, and exegetical works by all the major authors of the Catholic tradition.3 In contrast to Seghers, Mullock’s library, although containing the constitutive elements of a seminary library, is a testimony to its found- er’s much broader collecting habits. Mullock’s books are not restricted to his philosophical and theological studies or to his interest in univer- sal church history. REACHING OUT A celebration of the work of the Choir Schools’ Association The Choir Schools’ Association represents 46 schools attached to cathedrals, churches and college chapels educating some 25,000 children. A further 13 cathedral foundations, who draw their choristers from local schools, hold associate membership. In total CSA members look after nearly 1700 boy and girl choristers. Some schools cater for children up to 13. Others are junior schools attached to senior schools through to 18. Many are Church of England but the Roman Catholic, Scottish and Welsh churches are all represented. Most choir schools are independent but five of the country’s finest maintained schools are CSA members. Being a chorister is a huge commitment for children and parents alike. In exchange for their singing they receive an excellent musical training and first-class academic and all-round education. They acquire self- discipline and a passion for music which stay with them for the rest of their lives. ‘Daylight upon magic’: Stained Glass and the Victorian Monarchy Michael Ledger-Lomas If it help, through the senses, to bring home to the heart one more true idea of the glory and the tenderness of God, to stir up one deeper feeling of love, and thankfulness for an example so noble, to mould one life to more earnest walking after such a pattern of self-devotion, or to cast one gleam of brightness and hope over sorrow, by its witness to a continuous life in Christ, in and beyond the grave, their end will have been attained.1 Thus Canon Charles Leslie Courtenay (1816–1894) ended his account of the memorial window to the Prince Consort which the chapter of St George’s Chapel, Windsor had commissioned from George Gilbert Scott and Clayton and Bell. Erected in time for the wedding of Albert’s son the Prince of Wales in 1863, the window attempted to ‘combine the two ele- ments, the purely memorial and the purely religious […] giving to the strictly memorial part, a religious, whilst fully preserving in the strictly religious part, a memorial character’. For Courtenay, a former chaplain- in-ordinary to Queen Victoria, the window asserted the significance of the ‘domestic chapel of the Sovereign’s residence’ in the cult of the Prince Consort, even if Albert’s body had only briefly rested there before being moved to the private mausoleum Victoria was building at Frogmore. This window not only staked a claim but preached a sermon. It proclaimed the ‘Incarnation of the Son of God’, which is the ‘source of all human holiness, the security of the continuousness of life and love in Him, the assurance of the Communion of Saints’. -

Lincoln Cathedral CHORAL EVENSONG with the Installation of Canons Sunday 2nd May 2021 3.45pm Welcome to Lincoln Cathedral We are delighted to welcome you to Lincoln Cathedral for the installation of new canons, and the welcome of new members of the cathedral’s governing Chapter. A particular welcome to family, friends and congregation who have come to support those being installed today. Earlier this week the canons designate made the Declaration of Assent and swore the Oaths of Allegiance, and the Bishop of Lincoln collated them as canons of the cathedral. We gather now for their installation. Much of this afternoon’s service is sung by the choir and follows a set pattern which is offered daily in the cathedral. Its essence is praise: words, inspired by God, used to worship him and lift our minds and hearts. The singing of psalms and the reading from the Old Testament unite us with our spiritual ancestors, the Jews, and with Jesus Christ, who himself used them to praise God. Our meditation on the word of God leads us to Jesus who is the Word made flesh, and so the Magnificat - a song of praise first sung by Mary, the mother of Jesus - acts as a pivot, pointing us to the new relationship with God which is brought about in the birth of Christ. The remainder of the service celebrates that ‘new covenant’ and, in the intercessions, commits us to the life of service to which Christians are called. If the service is new to you, we hope that in the prayerful combination of words, music and silence you will find space for meaningful reflection. -

A Brief History A brief history of St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Glasgow The congregation of St Mary’s can be traced back to Glasgow’s ancient St Mungo’s Cathedral in the turbulent period before the Church of Scotland’s episcopalian structure was dismantled in 1689. Both before and after this change, public worship according to episcopalian traditions caused rioting in the city. However, Glasgow’s Episcopalians continued to meet in private houses or in a succession of meeting houses throughout the eighteenth century, surviving the rigours of the Penal Laws enacted after the 1745 Rising; throughout this period some of them were ardent and influential Jacobites. After the repeal of the Penal Laws in 1792, the congregation expanded, and for many years services took place in a classroom in the Grammar School in George Street. In 1825 St Mary’s Episcopal Chapel opened in Renfield Street to accommodate the growing congregation. The architect of the chapel was Robert Scott. After only forty-five years, the decision was made to move again. George Gilbert Scott, already working as architect for Glasgow University and one of the foremost architects in Britain, was commissioned to design a new church in Great Western Road. The result is one of the city’s best Gothic Revival buildings, constructed by the finest craftsmen available. Most of the stained glass was designed by the studios of Hardman, and Clayton & Bell. The church was opened for worship in 1871 and St Mary’s was consecrated in 1884. Nine years later, the imposing spire, added to the original square tower, was finally completed to the design of Scott’s son. -

“Cathedral-Style” Churches
“Cathedral-Style” Churches After the turn of the century, Ukrainian congregations often grew to a size where their small church buildings were impractical. The years from about 1920 to 1940 thus witnessed the construction of many large Ukrainian churches in Manitoba. These were no longer simple log or light wood frame structures like those built by the early settlers. The new churches were more elaborate structures, larger in scale and often more sophisticated in ornamentation; similar in conception to the large Ukrainian Baroque churches like the restored St. Sophia in Kiev, the Church of the Holy Trinity and the Chapel of the Three Saints. Although not technically cathedrals – which are the seats of bishops – these churches are so extraordinary, especially in a rural landscape, that they are frequently called “prairie cathedrals.” Considering the modest nature of the log or wood frame churches examined previously in this study, the large churches designed for Ukrainian Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox congregations in Manitoba during the 1920s, 30s, 40, and 50s are remarkable. Foremost among these are the Ukrainian Catholic churches designed by Father Philip Ruh. His designs for “cathedral‐style” churches adorn the countryside outside Manitoba from Edmonton, Alberta to St. Catharineʹs, Ontario. Research to date attributes 33 structures to this amazing man. Ruh’s influence also spread to other communities in less direct ways. He was often called upon by various congregations to discuss the designs for new churches and the two main contractors working for Ruh relied on his designs for the churches they built without his supervision. Ruh was prolific and his designs influential. -

The rise of the FPU ushered in a new era of class politics. But fishermen were divided in their support for the union; Irish-Catholic fishermen have long been seen as at the periphery—or entirely outside—of the FPU’s fold. Appeals to ethno- religious unity among Irish Catholics contributed to their ambivalence about or opposition to the union. Yet, many Irish Catholics chose to support the FPU. In fact, the historical record shows Irish Catholics demonstrating a range of attitudes towards the union: some joined and remained, some joined and then left, and others rejected the union altogether.
