These are their stories. Tim's MLB Debut (9/12/06) ABOUT COOKANDSONBATS Welcome to my first "turn-back-the-clock" game entry. When I took Tim to his first game back in 2006, I didn't even know MLBlogs existed. Tim and I went to about 20 games or so between 2006-2008 and I plan to tell those stories this off-season. This is the first. When I found out toward the end of the 2005 baseball season that our first (and so far only) child due to be born in early 2006 was going to be a boy, I got really excited about the idea of having a little baseball partner. I was looking forward to playing catch in the yard and teaching my son how to hit. And I was really excited to have a little partner with whom to go to MLB games and, hopefully, to love the Mariners as much as I do. Tim was born in January 2006. I decided I wanted his first game to be a Mariners home game and I wanted it to be late in the season so he Read about me would be at least six months old...so he could at least somewhat "experience" the experience, not just "be there." I picked Tuesday, RECENT ENTRIES September 12, 2006 as the big day.

  • SEATTLE MARINERS NEWS CLIPS September 3, 2009
SEATTLE MARINERS NEWS CLIPS September 3, 2009 Originally published Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 6:24 PM Felix Hernandez outduels Scott Kazmir in Mariners' 3-0 victory over Angels Mariners ace continues to make his Cy Young bid with eight strong innings. By Geoff Baker Seattle Times staff reporter Some late-season help for the Mariners isn't hurting Felix Hernandez's chances at a Cy Young Award. Hernandez found himself in awfully familiar territory on Wednesday, dominating an opponent yet still uncertain of earning a decision as the seventh-inning stretch began. But that's when Bill Hall, acquired just two weeks ago from Milwaukee, took over this eventual 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels with both his bat and his feet. Hall doubled home the game's first run off Angels starter Scott Kazmir, then stole third base and scored when the throw there bounced into left field. It all added up to a crucial 14th victory for Hernandez, who kept pace with other Cy Young contenders while lowering his earned-run average with eight shutout innings in the process. "With the way FiFi was throwing the ball today, Felix, he was unbelievable," Hall said of Hernandez. "You just know that if you score a couple for him, you're going to win the ballgame." A crowd of 22,130 at Safeco Field had waited most of the day to see the Mariners score even one run for their ace. They'd watched the Mariners load the bases with nobody out in the first inning, only to see Kazmir, making his Angels debut after a trade from Tampa Bay last week, strike out the side - topping it off by fanning Hall.

A’s News Clips, Saturday, October 2, 2010 Daric Barton's raises his profile with two home runs in Oakland A's rout of Seattle Mariners By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune One ball went rocketing over the right-field wall in the first inning Friday night at Safeco Field. Another followed directly in its path the next inning, this time with the bases loaded. By the top of the second, A's first baseman Daric Barton had the biggest game of his major league career. The fact that he left in the seventh inning with tightness in his right quadriceps didn't diminish his performance in the A's 9-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Barton went 3 for 4 with two homers, including his first career grand slam, and a career-high six RBIs. True, the Mariners aren't offering much resistance as they inch closer to a 100-loss campaign, but Barton's night was an attention-grabber. "Barty -- the one-man party," catcher Kurt Suzuki said. Actually, right-hander Trevor Cahill deserved credit too, blanking Seattle for seven innings and notching his 18th victory in his final start of the season. While Cahill's night was an extension of what he's done all year, Barton's power display was much less common. He's earned praise from the A's front office, particularly manager Bob Geren, for his work in the No. 2 spot in the batting order. He entered Friday tied for the major league lead in walks (110) and ranked sixth in the American League in on-base percentage (.393).

A’s News Clips, Saturday, September 5, 2009 One bad inning beats A's rookie By Joe Stiglich, OAKLAND TRIBUNE Clayton Mortensen didn't make a great early impression Friday night against the Seattle Mariners. The A's right-hander endured an adventurous four-run second inning that had Oakland's bullpen stirring early. But he recovered nicely, and while the Mariners continued taking it to the A's with a 6-3 victory at the Oakland Coliseum, Mortensen's rebound was a silver lining for the A's. Mortensen — filling in for fellow rookie Vin Mazzaro, who has shoulder tendinitis — lasted seven innings and didn't allow another run after the second. He retired 16 of the final 20 batters he faced. "I just started leaving the ball up," Mortensen said of the second. "These guys, if you leave the ball up, they're going to hit it hard. I'm more of a ground-ball guy." That four-run second was all the Mariners would need to win their 11th against the A's in 14 contests this season. Nomar Garciaparra's two-run homer in the seventh pulled the A's to within 4-3. But Seattle added a run off A's reliever Michael Wuertz in he eighth, and Jose Lopez's solo homer off Jeff Gray in the ninth provided more cushion. It was just the third major league appearance for Mortensen, 24, one of three players the A's received from St. Louis in the Matt Holliday trade. He had made one previous start with the A's, giving up eight runs in four innings at Kansas City on Aug.
