2 HARDCARD

In memorabilia, "firsts" count, especially cards. That's why rookie cards demand high prices and so the earliest card ever made must also matter. These two taken in NYC of John C. Heenan are dated 1861 and that may just be the oldest card made for any sport. We have run British CDV's that likely date to that year or before but these carry the date right on them in a caption at the bottom and their reverse carries the logo of the photographer so they aren't second generation photos. That has to at least make them the oldest American boxing cards. Thanks to subscriber, Andy Baran for the images and info.

BCN’s website has been completely overhauled and isn’t it about time?

Now subscribers are given free access to a members-only area of the website that contains nearly 4000 photos of boxing memorabilia in our gallery with more added each month.

Members also have access to downloadable back issues and to the latest news on the boxing memorabilia front.

There’s also a special price on the first and last 50 back issues remaining in inven- tory.

And for the first time, you can subscribe to BCN online using Paypal. If you do not have a Paypal account you can use Paypal’s guest feature and pay with a credit card. That will redirect you back to the site so you can verify your email address, set up a password and start enjoying the members-only area.

Great, but what if you already have a subscription and it is not near lapsing? No prob- lem. Just go on the site and email me and I will send you your password. You may also email me at [email protected].

Oh and while on the site, take the pop quiz!

4 Here are some frequently asked questions already about the new site:

How about swapping links? If you are a regular dealer advertising in BCN, we will be happy to include a link on our dealer page. We will be adding some helpful links to the members-only site in days to come but we see long lists of links as simply not helpful to our subscribers or BCN.

Can I run an ad on the website? In the future this will be added and existing long- time dealers will have first shot but BCN never wants a site crammed with ads that do not connect directly with the needs of collectors. In fact, if it doesn't mean any- thing to the hobby, it won't run.

Is it true BCN is going all digital? We can’t rule this out but it is not in the cards for the foreseeable future. For those of you who still do not have a computer, just keep your mailbox - for now.

This site has been live only three weeks at this writing and we are fielding phone calls daily from people with something to sell or wanting to buy. We have also added new subscribers and, frankly, some old ones who had lost track of BCN and we them.

I am proud to finally bring a website to BCN that it and you deserve. Like I said, isn’t it about time?

Easily the two biggest draws of the weekend and the two hardest signatures, Stallone and Tyson.

6 Thursday night and most of the faces I saw were new to me.

Mom I head over to the HOF a bit early for my noon talk on memorabilia and catch the last half of the Mickey and Dickie talk. Ward and Eklund seem to be just as portrayed in the Fighter. Mickey is humble and reserved and there’s still a lot of “f-you” in Eklund. But the first little “wow” this weekend came when the moderator asked about their mother who passed away since the movie came out. Both men turned into kids ,joking about their Mom with the respect of two loving sons. Mickey told this : one time the police came to the house looking for Dickie who was upstairs asleep. His Mom swore he was not there and was in the process of kicking the cops out of the house when a bleary- eyed Dickie appeared on the stairs. “When did you get here?” Mom said. The bigger wow came when they revealed that Tyson was there and was going to be at the fist casting. That’s when we knew just how boisterous Chavez at cocktail party this crowd might get. Tyson waved, got his fist cast, more time shilling for BCN now that I have a website did interviews with the media and then – left. If I live I am truly proud of. to 100 I will remember him being driven away at top speed in a golf cart with real policemen on either Fiesta el Terrible side hanging on screaming, “Let go of the cart!” as Friday night used to be fight night but now the maybe 100 fans chased the cart waving gloves and HOF has replaced that with a special theme show photos and sharpies. I wish I had gotten my camera and this one was “Mexican Fiesta.” The idea was out fast enough. It was funny and kind of scary at the to feature film clips and talks from the Mexican same time. I had a thought that if they caught him fighters. My only up moment in this otherwise they would just pick up the cart as the back wheels dismal even was the story told by John Stracey who spun in space That’s also when I also began to doubt said when he went to Mexico City to fight Napoles in I would score a Tyson signature. I realized I couldn’t front of an enormous crowd, after beating Napoles, outrun that damn golf cart. he had his robe stolen on the way back to the My talk was as usual though I did spend a little dressing room. That’s funny. But then two of the fighters had airplane delays (Cuevas and Finito Lopez) and, inexplicably, there was no opportunity for autographs, something that could have saved this event. The best of these theme events have had ample autograph opportunities at the end. The fighters also mostly had little to say. On top of all that, for the first time the sold- out crowd was first forced (crammed) into the bar area and then let into the event area just before the event was scheduled to start. Start. Then the event started late with no explanation given. I was particularly impressed by the availability of newer stuff and that might account for the better Stimulus package sales. Folks want to collect related to fighters they can remember seeing. Still, the vintage material held its own. Saturday evening is the cocktail party where the very long line waited in an on- again-off-again rain to enter a cocktail party that lacked Chavez, Tyson and Stallone. Still, there were lots of guests including Morales, Fullmer, Ward, Cortez, Tszyu and at least a dozen others.

Okay, fight fans, heeeere we go The cocktail party precedes the banquet, which is now held in the Oncenter in Syracuse. During the speeches came what, Saturday featured the biggest attendance we have had at the collectibles show and it was obvious the Obama administration could jump-start the economy by just suggesting that Tyson was in the vicinity. I surveyed 8 dealers. Two said it was “very good” and six said it was their best sales ever. The tables were sold out, the line for autographs was extending out in the hall at one point and the crowds around the tables were considerable. Those last two things are, as veterans will tell you, very different things. In years past we have had fairly long autograph lines but autographs are all many people And, for the 20th year running, John Gay wins "Worst in Show," this year for his I judge this painting of Ali kayoing Foreman by Jace imitation of an actual fighter. 11 Yo! Then there was Tyson’s speech which he had to cut short when he became so emotional he couldn’t continue. I always get the feeling that these guys know intellectually that getting into the Hall is a big deal, great honor, but after witnessing 22 years of these weekends, I am convinced that it just does not hit them until they are at the podium on Sunday. Stallone’s speech was eloquent and ended with a big, “Yo, Adrian, I did it!” Some fighters stayed around after to sign. Tyson did not. The weekend ended with a great many people not getting what they came for, ’s autograph but I didn’t get it either and do not feel cheated a bit. It was, as always, a unique experience with some familiar events and themes but looking back, I think, “Wow.”

Snap .

Smile, you're in BCN

It just wouldn't be a memorabilia show if I didn't get pics of guys mowing their lawns. Here we have clear proof why Pancho Villa was a more physically fit boxer than Max Baer. And for all you riding mower freaks out there, this photo of Baer was taken in 1935! Probably not a John Deere mower, however, and likely does not have cup holders.
