After several changes in 1987, this year has seen the ongoing commitment from all of our Commissioners. The heavy workload they are undertaking, coupled with their reasoned decision making, gives both myself and football officials throughout the state, great confidence in their ability to tackle the challenges that lie ahead.

  • 2004 Centenary Game Record
ST. BEDES-MENTONE TIGERS On behalf of the VAFA, I congratulate St. Bedes/Mentone Tigers, and in particular the Mentone Tigers branch of the partnership, on 100 years of Australian Rules football. A wonderful achievement. Mentone was a force in the Federal League for many years, and I have Bruce McTaggart vivid memories of classic (and fiery) “local derbies” between the Mentone President, VAFA (the Tigers) and Cheltenham (the Rosellas) in the 1950’s and 1960’s – better than the VFA of the 60’s and 70’s! If I remember correctly, Mentone won the great majority of those clashes, and also won quite a number of premierships, during that period. When the Federal League was collapsing, it seemed a natural progression for a “merger” to take place between St. Bedes (which had come into the VAFA in 1972) and Mentone. This occurred in 1993, when St. Bedes was in D Grade. Since that time, and with a lot of hard work, the club has progressed to B Grade, and has become a force there. All the signs are good for continuing success, and it will be well deserved when (rather than if) it comes. The 2004 season has started well for the Club. Will this be the year? May I also congratulate St. Bedes/Mentone Tigers and Beaumaris for creating a “local derby” of their own, playing today for the “Centenary Cup”. Tradition and challenge play significant roles in our football, and a local challenge adds a little bit extra to a match. Good luck to both teams in the inaugural game today, and good luck to St Bedes/Mentone Tigers for the future.

  • Hard Sell: Australian Football in Sydney by Matthew Healy a Thesis
Hard Sell: Australian Football in Sydney by Matthew Healy A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS School of Human Movement, Recreation and Performance Faculty of Human Development Victoria University Melbourne, Victoria August 2002 FTS THESIS 796.336099441 HEA 30001008093827 Healy, Matthew Hard sell : Australian football in Sydney Abstract Australian Rules football is the nation's most popular spectator sport. Few sporting activities can match the fanaticism, emotion and passion that the game generates. In Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania, Australian Rules football plays a large part in the livelihood of millions of people. However, the game has had a somewhat weaker presence in the northern states, despite the fact that the expansion of Australian Rules football has long been on the agenda for administrators of the code. This thesis examines the entry of Australian Rules football entry into the rugby- dominated domain of Sydney. It traces unsuccessful attempts made by the Victorian Football Association and the Victorian Football League to promote the code in Sydney during the 1880s and early part of the nineteenth century, the hiatus of the middle part of the 1900s when Australian Rules football seemed to wallow in obscurity, and the League's 'Sydney Experiment' in the 1970s. The thesis then goes on to examine the circumstances surrounding the relocation of the South Melbourne Football Club to Sydney in 1982, and the club's subsequent decades in the harbour city. It is only in recent years that Australian Rules football appears to have finally made its mark in Sydney.

2504 LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL Thursday, 1 September 1988 THE PRESIDENT (Hon Clive Griffiths) took the Chair at 2.30 pm, and read prayers. PETITION AIDS - Condom Mdvertisements The following petition bearing the signatures of 30 persons was presented by Hon P.O. Pendal - To thie Honourable the President and members of the Legislative Council of the Parliament of Western Australia in Parliament assembled: The humble petition of the undersigned electors and residents of the State of Western Australia respectfully showeth that: The use of advertising which features a bus-length, inflated condom is offensive to many West Australians; Since the metropolitan bus service on which the advertisements will appear are owned and operated by the State Government, the Goverruent could and should act to abandon the advertisements; And that as all such advertising is part of the joint Commonwealth/State anti-AID.S. campaign, your petitioners humbly pray: That all members of Parliament seek to persuade both Governments to abandon the condom advertising on buses. And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray. [See paper No 389.] PETITION Citizen's initiated/Veto Referendum The following petition bearing the signatures of 45 persons was presented by Hon P.G. Pendal - To the Hon the President and Members of the Legislative Council in Parliament assembled. The humble petition of the undersigned citizens of Western Australia respectfully showeth that:- Your petitioners express strong support for the concept of Citizens Initiated/Veto Referendum and request that a Bill be introduced into this place which will form the basis of Citizens Initiative/Veto Referendum legislation in Western Australia.
