The Artist Photographer Lies in ALL of Us By Lisa Langell

We as photographers often want to be more innovative and creative, but our own mental barriers can “prevent” the creative process from happening. One of the biggest mental blocks is simply believing, “I’m not a very creative person.” I hear this most often from engineers, accountants, and those in technical fields who have struggled to discover the creative style they desire. This session breaks down creative barriers in a really fun and logical way! I take an interactive, “myth-busters-style approach!” You’ll learn how to apply the creative process and develop patterns that will bring more joy, innovation, success, creativity and happiness to your photography!

You will learn: • How even those who feel they “are not artistic” can actually become artistic and creative • Understand “imaginative skill” and how it develops • About my “Mash up” formula for producing creativity • How you can debunk your own myths about artistic and creative ability • How to exercise your creativity through real-world examples and activities we will complete during the session • Inspirations to take with you

Lisa Langell is a full-time, award-winning photographer whose work has appeared in numerous prestigious publications including the cover of Outdoor Photographer magazine, plus numerous images in Arizona Highways, Ranger Rick, art galleries and more. She currently sits on the Board of Directors for the North American Nature Photography Association. She is also a proud ambassador for Tamron, FotoPro, and H&Y filters. Whether it was working as a master floral designer, a licensed psychologist, university faculty, an international consultant in K-12 education, the Chief Business Development Officer of an education technology company, a researcher, a writer, or an artist—she enjoyed meeting each challenge. Still, her strongest calling was photography--ever since childhood--when bird watching ignited her lifelong love of nature and the camera. In 2010, she turned her passion for photography into a business—and in 2015 she successfully transitioned to photography full-time and left the corporate and consulting world behind. The journey with photography has definitely been Lisa’s favorite – she loves combining her diverse background and skills into her photographic art and instruction. Bringing joy to others brings joy to her! She thrives on creating innovative learning experiences and pushing photographic boundaries. She equally enjoys enriching, stimulating and expanding fellow photographers’ minds emotionally, creatively and intellectually.

PSA Youth Showcase seeks to encourage the newest generations to learn and share the enjoyment of photography and is committed to enriching the lives of school-age children and youth around the world by introducing them to photography as a means of self-expression and personal growth. It is now in need of people dedicated to photography to become part of the Youth Showcase committee. The committee has lost several key people in the last years. One need not be a PSA member to work on this vital youth program.

Here are the positions that we are looking for help;

• A person to convert all of the award winning prints from the YS print section to digital images. Digital images will be used in the PSA JOURNAL, souvenir brochure, and display boards (used in the annual Photo Festival).

• A person to organize the projected entries from the uploader after the uploader has closed and finalize the scoresheets.

• One primary Coordinator and up to three assistants to serve as the Projected judging team. They will be setting up the judging process for the projected entry section. Run the competition, and then follow through with recording all the scores and results when judging.

• A person to create the video presentation to be shown at the annual Photo Festival (conference) and displayed on the PSA website.

Any interested volunteers can check the information on the web site https://psa-photo.org/index.php?psa- youth-showcase

My interest in photography began in grade school when I received my first camera – a Kodak Brownie. Early photos were primarily of family activities. While in 8th grade, my father found a 35mm Ricoh 500 viewfinder camera, and I found a life- long passion. At the time, nothing on cameras was automated. I had an uncle who taught me the relationship between f-stops and shutter speed and how to estimate exposure using the “sunny 16” rule. In High School, I joined the Camera Club, and the real learning started. Our cameras included a 35mm Argus and a 4x5 Speed Graphic (the old newspaper photographer’s choice). We shot all the pictures for the school newspaper and yearbook. The experience was invaluable, shooting everything from small groups to large groups (think choir, band) and all sporting events. In the darkroom, I learned how the develop film and make prints. As an adult, I learned to appreciate all things Nature, and I realized that some of my photos did more than record events – they could also be artistic. My wife and I have been fortunate to have traveled to all 50 states. We always seek out National and State Parks, wildlife refuges, and other natural settings. My favorite subject continues to be wildflowers, landscapes, and waterfalls. I will also shoot wildlife if the opportunity arises. I have been a member of camera clubs for over 30 years. I find them to be an excellent way to share a common interest, continue learning new skills, and be open to new ways to look at a subject.

And now a word from your State Membership Director…

As we embark on our new Virtual, Digital future with our Chapter Meetings, this would be a good time for all current PSA Members to encourage your fellow club members who have not yet joined PSA to consider it. I am asking each of you to speak to your fellow club members about PSA and all we have to offer. With the move to Zoom Meetings this year, it is an excellent time for everyone to experience and learn from what we have to offer without leaving the comfort and safety of your own home. I guess you are a member because you see the value of membership, so I would think that it would be reasonable that some of your friends in your club would too.

If one of your fellow club members does decide to join PSA and puts you down as their referral, you earn points towards a Membership Star Rating. If you are not familiar with this PSA Member benefit, you can read more about it here https://psa-photo.org/index.php?membership-stars-2. An added benefit to the new member is an automatic free Wisconsin Chapter Membership for their first year. Speaking of which, if you have not paid your Chapter Membership fee, please do so soon as you don’t want to miss out on any of the upcoming activities. There is a membership form in the summer edition of the Award Winning Chapter Newsletter InFocus that you can print off and mail in with your payment.

PSA continues to add to its collection of Webinars available to Individual PSA Members and can be found on the PSA website here https://psa-photo.org/index.php?webinar-info, and you will have to log in to view them. Remember, these webinars are for individual members and may not be shared with your full club or non- PSA members, and they are a benefit of your PSA Membership.

Did you know that PSA has a Print Collection? Each year, PSA has a calendar with select images from the collection, and the 2020 Calendar is still available for ordering, and soon you will see the 2021 Calendar. You can find out more here, https://psa-photo.org/index.php?print-collection-calendar. This is a great way to support PSA and the world-class Print Collection.

I am always available to answer questions regarding your PSA Membership, so don’t hesitate to contact me if something comes up. If I don’t have the answer, I will work on resolving any issue or question you may have. Also, if any of your club members who may be interested in joining PSA have questions, I am ready to help them as well.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the November Zoom Meeting.

Stay Safe and Healthy. In Isolated Solidarity,

Marty Welter Wisconsin State Membership Director Happy Shooting!
