NEW YORK STATE ASSEMBLY PUERTO RICAN/HISPANIC TASK FORCE

HON. SHELDON SILVER Assembly Speaker HON. PETER M. RIVERA Hon. Vito J. Lopez CHAIRMAN Co-Chairman Dear Friends,

MEMBERS: A few statistics speak volumes to the growing influence of Hispanics in our society: approximately Hon. Carmen E. Arroyo 40 million Hispanics currently represent 13.5% of the nation’s population and half of them are Hon. Jeffrion L. Aubry under 25 years old. Hispanics already the largest minority group among children, are expected Hon. Micheal R. Benedetto Hon. Michael Benjamin to become the largest minority group overall by next year. This means that a very large number Hon. William F. Boyland, Jr. of Hispanics are our future students, workers, taxpayers, and business and political leaders. Hon. James F. Brennan New data on further growth among the U.S. Hispanic community underscore that the nation’s Hon. Alec Brook-Krasny priorities and overall well-being will soon have to reflect the issues that matter to Hispanics and Hon. Karim Camara how well the community fares. Hon. Vivian E. Cook Hon. Luis M. Diaz The well-being of Hispanic children and families can help us create a strong, prosperous, and Hon. Ruben Diaz, Jr. fair nation, in which everyone benefits. This prosperity begins with access to a quality education Hon. Jeffrey Dinowitz that needs to be complimented with practical and useful workplace experience. Fellowships and Hon. Adriano Espaillat Hon. Herman D. Farrell, Jr. internships are great opportunities that can help build leadership and workforce skills absent Hon. Sandra R. Galef from a formal college education. Hon. Michael N. Gianaris In New York and elsewhere, Hispanics are dramatically underrepresented in policy making Hon. Aurelia Greene Hon. Diane Gordon positions in government and the corporate sectors. Although the proportion is growing rapidly, Hon. Richard N. Gottfried only 22% of Hispanics have the opportunity to attend colleges and universities and represent Hon. Aileen Gunther 10% of total enrollment. These are problems that negatively impact the economic stability of Hon. Carl Heastie our communities. As the majority population ages out of the labor force, Hispanics should have Hon. Sam Hoyt an opportunity to move into these positions, as long as we continue to prepare ourselves for such Hon. Rhoda S. Jacobs opportunities. Hispanic elected officials recognize these trends and are preparing to aggressively Hon. Hakeem Jeffries Hon. Brian P. Kavanagh address this critically important issue. Hon. Rory I. Lancman The pages that follow are filled with important content that represents sources of funding for Hon. Ivan C. Lafayette college and post-graduate education. In addition, important resources for internships and Hon. Joseph R. Lentol Hon. Margaret M. Markey fellowships are provided for those interested in a career in public service, whether it be work in Hon. Nettie Mayersohn the government or the non-profit sectors. The Assembly Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force is Hon. Joan L. Millman proud to be able to provide this important resource. Hon. Catherine T. Nolan Hon. Daniel J. O’Donnell It is our hope that this guide will help our youth to better connect with the people, communities and Hon. Felix Ortiz educational opportunities that will provide them with increased chances for a successful life. This is Hon. Amy Paulin a fundamental requirement in a civil society. Opportunity and achievement, unhindered, leads Hon. Jose R. Peralta to a more informed citizenry that strengthens communities and enriches our entire nation. Hon. Audrey I. Pheffer Hon. Adam Clayton Powell IV This guide is a tool for empowering lives and communities. On behalf of the Task Force, I hope Hon. James Gary Pretlow you find this resource a useful tool that will become part of your family’s library of reference Hon. Philip R. Ramos materials. Hon. Jose Rivera Hon. Naomi Rivera Sincerely, Hon. William Scarborough Hon. Anthony S. Seminerio Hon. Michele Titus Hon. Darryl C. Towns Peter M. Rivera Hon. Mark Weprin Chairman, New York State Assembly Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force Hon. Keith L. Please use this Corporate, Government, and Non-Profit Sector Internship Directory and Scholarship Guide to guide you through your search for volunteer and paid internship/ fellowship opportunities and scholarships that can assist your undergraduate, graduate, or law school education. The internship directory is broken down by several topics and workforce-sectors. Fellowships and scholarships are separate. Please make sure to pay attention to the last page (page 43) which contains important internet links which are mega-information resources. Any information that cannot be found in this directory will most likely be found on one of those sites. All internships, fellowships and scholarships require submission of a cover letter and resume. Many have strict deadlines. Please consider deadlines listed in this directory only as a general guide and check with the program about specific guidelines for the year you are applying as many programs change their requirements regularly. Written inquiries are suggested versus phone calls. Several programs, especially fellowships and more selective internships and scholarships, require submission of writing samples, or other specific requirements omitted in this directory/guide. Please make sure to begin your inquiry well before deadlines. Your application will most likely NOT be reviewed if received after the deadline. While this directory/guide will serve as a very useful resource, it is important to note that there is a large volume of information that has not been included due to space considerations. The web sites mentioned above are key to researching more information. Your interest in a specific company or workforce sector can help you narrow your search.
