  • West Bay & Eype
Crumbling cliffs of sand reveal falling sea levels some 180 million years ago. Fossil brittle stars found here and West Bay & Eype on display at Bridport museum offer a vivid glimpse of that long lost sea. Almost 500 years ago a blazing fire on Thorncombe beacon helped to warn the queen of the Eype Mouth & Down House Farm / Village approaching Spanish armada. • From the bus stop, walk west across the bridge and left around to the sea front esplanade. Continue west ascending the South West Coast Path. The path becomes level at the top with good coastal views, then descends to Eype Mouth. The path down to the stream is badly eroded and it may be easier to Walk Facts cross on the beach where the stream disappears into the shingle. The car park and café at Eype Mouth is open in season (located few yards up the road at Eype House Caravan and Camping Site). Start point Bus stop near West Bay harbour • Continue up the steep hill along the South West Coast Path and though a gate onto the Down House Distance 4.5 miles / 7km or 3.5 miles / 5.6km Farm National Trust Estate. Continue until the path splits by sign to ‘Garden Café’. At this point, for the energetic, a detour may be taken to the summit of Thorncombe Beacon, giving stunning Walking Time 120 mins not including stops views of the coast from Portland to East Devon. Difficulty Moderate with some steep sections and eroded paths. • Go up the hill then follow the signpost to the right for Down House Farm, through a field to the farm.

Essential information for Participants. We are pleased to be holding the Jurassic Coast 100 across areas of West Dorset and East Devon managed by the National Trust. As the UK’s largest conservation charity, the National Trust looks after over 257,000 hectares (635,000 acres) of Britain’s natural environment, ensuring that we’ll always have beautiful, wild and inspiring places like West Dorset and East Devon where events like the Jurassic Coast 100 can happen. We hope you enjoy this special place and help us look after it while we’re there. To find out ways you can support the National Trust keep these special for everyone, visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk. 100 Mile Route Description 0-14km: Studland Beach to Durlston Country Park. The Jurassic Coast 100 mile event starts at the South West Coast Path start/finish marker, the route is well-marked and navigation is fairly straightforward; we will have additional light up markers during the night. Say goodbye to Poole and Bournemouth as you head south along Studland Beach, part of which is a naturist beach, the dramatic sight of Old Harry Rocks comes into view; these chalk formations mark the official start of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. From here you head along a sweeping coast path that drops down into Swanage. Along the seafront you can fill up water bottles at one of the many public water fountains. A little bit of town running and then into the trees at Durlston Country Park, a welcome bit of shade on a sunny day! 14-25km: This is a beautiful but isolated stretch of coast; with Dancing Ledge, Chapman's Pool, and rock features left behind from quarrying to look out for.

  • Golden Cap, Dorset
Golden Cap, Dorset Place To Walk Location & Access: West Bay is the port town for Bridport, and is found at SY461 904. It can be accessed via the A35 road from Dorchester to the east, and via the A35 road from Lyme Regis to the west. Bridport and West Bay are served by a regular Wessex bus service (number X51). This service is also known as the ‘Jurassic Coaster’. View along Dorset coast from Golden Cap Key Geography: Stunning section of the South West Coast Path - part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Cliffs, coastal management, fossils. Description: In order to make a full day of exploration, this 7 mile walk can start at West Bay – setting for the popular TV series ‘Broadchurch’. The south west coast path can be followed from here, climbing Golden Cap (the highest cliff on the south coast) along the way, before the walk ends at the beach at Charmouth. At West Bay, the shingle beach is backed by the impressive sheer wall of East Cliff. Here, horizontal beds of golden Bridport sands alternate with nodules of more resistant calcareous sandstone, which jut out giving the cliffs a serrated appearance. There are some interesting rock armour sea defences to look at before continuing along the coast path to Beach and cliffs at West Bay pass Eype Mouth. After this, you embark on the first steep climb of the walk to the top of Thorncombe Beacon. From here, there is a great view back towards West Bay, and further eastwards along the Jurassic coast towards Weymouth and Portland.
