The conference was a four-day event with more than 125 panels, plenaries, workshops, keynote speakers, and cultural and social events. Enriching Place, the theme of this first combined History and Historic Preservation Conference is an evocative phrase for New Jerseyans. After witnessing the power and destruction of Hurricane Sandy last year, we are all more aware of how important place is. How important landmarks are as repositories of our shared experiences. How we use buildings and sites from our history to map a road to our future. This year’s program features author Tony Hiss who will speak to the idea and reality of place and how people experience it. His remarks will lead us into a full day of classroom sessions, tours, exhibits and workshops that will educate us about the details of preservation and accreditation, examine the necessity of disaster planning and recovery, and expand our understanding of special places in Newark, on the Raritan Waterfront and at the Statue of Liberty. During the day please visit with the sponsors and vendors in the exhibit area. REFLECTIONS END OF YEAR REPORT 2016 These efforts are dedicated to the late Dr. Robert Curvin and Dr. Clement Alexander Price. 3 LETTER FROM THE CHAIR JUNIUS WILLIAMS, ESQ. Newark Celebration 350, Chairman It has been an incredible honor to be selected by Newark Celebration 350 to serve as chairman for this year-long salute to our city’s past, present and future. It was with pride and humility that I stepped up to realize the vision of the late Dr. Clement Price, Newark’s foremost historian and tireless booster, who first conceived of this celebration as an occasion to take stock of our challenges and hopes. After deliberation, the Board agreed upon a primary objective – to assure that all citizens would have an opportunity to participate in and be supportive of this celebratory initiative. I believe we succeeded with an expansive calendar of more than 150 events, many planned by the people, that reached citizens of all ages, cultures and faiths in every ward of our city. We have celebrated with young artists of our schools, with great jazz performers on our city’s premier stages and with poets from across North America and with business leaders who were our generous sponsors. We shared the food, music and culture of African-American, Portuguese, Ecuadorian, Brazilian, Latino and Irish communities. We’ve explored the historic contributions of Jewish families and Puritan founders, of women and military heroes. It’s been an astonishing year. A city that can claim a vibrant diversity like ours already can count itself rich in resources, energy and pride. -

Smithsonian Institution Special Symposium: (Re)Presenting America: The Evolution of Culturally Specific Museums PARTICIPANTS Xavier Becerra Representative Xavier Becerra of California’s 31st Congressional District serves as Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, is a member of the powerful Committee on Ways and Means, and is Ranking Member of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security. The first Latino to serve on the Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Becerra has used his position to increase opportunities for working families, to improve the Social Security program for women and minorities, to combat poverty among the working poor, and to strengthen Medicare and ensure its long-term viability. Rep. Becerra is a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) where he served as Chair during the 105th Congress (1997-98). The Congressman is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. Rep. Becerra serves on the Smithsonian Board of Regents and on the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture Council. In 2003, Rep. Becerra introduced bipartisan legislation to establish a federal commission to explore the viability of creating a “National Museum of the American Latino” in Washington, D.C., and in 2008 former President George W. Bush signed the legislation into law. On May 5, 2011, months ahead of schedule, the National Museum of the American Latino Commission submitted its final report to Congress and President Barack Obama with its findings and recommendations regarding the creation of a national museum focused on American Latino history, art and culture. Te Jim Crow North Research Article Winner of the 14th Annual Graduate History Symposium Best Paper Prize, University of Toronto, 2018 Te Jim Crow North: Segregation and Agency in New Jersey Beaches and Swimming Pools Jason Romisher Simon Fraser University A common misconception is that Jim Crow practices in the United States were primar- ily a southern phenomenon. One theme that has emerged in recent scholarship is that public facilities were operated on an exclusionary basis in many northern areas until concerted campaigns in the mid-twentieth century fnally gained legal equality for Af- rican Americans. New Jersey is a particularly interesting northern state to examine Jim Crow practices because of the complex history of race-relations in the state that have made it one of the most segregated places in modern America. A look at access to swim- ming facilities in New Jersey brings this reality into focus. For example, African Ameri- cans in Atlantic City were confned to one unmaintained section of the beach dubbed Volume 7, Issue 1 7, Issue Volume ‘Chicken Bone Beach’ and some lakes also had racially separate beach areas. Despite the 1 7, Issue Volume 8 achievement in 1949 of a constitutional amendment banning discrimination in New 9 Jersey’s public spaces, African Americans continued to be efectively barred by whites from some activities through informal practices. One strategy that whites used to con- tinue segregationist practices was the creation of private swimming clubs, which also fostered class-based discrimination.
