On ne saura rien de son origine, mais il s’impose d’em- blée comme une mise en garde tirée de La divine comédie de Dante. Nul ne sortira indemne du visionnement de cette œuvre maudite signée Lucio Fulci, le maestro du macabre. Sa prémisse ne tient qu’à quelques lignes. Dans un petit village américain du nom de Dunwich (référence à Lovecraft oblige), un prêtre s’enlève la vie dans un cimetière et, par ce geste fatal, ouvre les portes des Enfers. Une médium accompagnée d’un jour- présente ici comme une créature de la nuit menaçante, capable de naliste se précipite sur les lieux pour y prévenir l’imminence de se déplacer à sa guise dans l’espace-temps.     "They’re Us": Representations of Women in George Romero’s ‘Living Dead’ Series Stephen Harper In the opening scene of George Romero’s 1978 film Martin, a teenage sexual psychopath kills and drinks the blood of a young woman in her sleeper train compartment during a struggle that is protracted, messy and far from one-sided. Although women are often victims in Romero’s films, they are by no means passive ones. Indeed, Romero is seldom in danger of objectivising or pornographising his female characters; on the contrary, Romero’s women are typically resourceful and autonomous. This paper analyses some of Romero’s representations of women, with particular reference to the four ‘living dead’ films which Romero made over a period of more than thirty years. These are Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1979), Day of the Dead (1985) and the 1990 remake of Night. [1] All of these films feature a group of human survivors in an America overrun by zombies. The survivors of Night hole up in a house; in Dawn the sanctuary is a shopping mall; while in Day, the darkest of the films, it is an underground military installation. Unsurprisingly, these savage and apocalyptic zombie films contain some of Romero’s most striking representations of active and even aggressive women. This in itself hints at a feminist approach. While Hollywood films typically eroticize and naturalise male violence and emphasise female passivity, Romero uses his zombies to undermine such assumptions. Romero’s female zombies are not only undead but virtually ungendered; for instance, they are responsible for as many acts of violence as their male counterparts.

Jaume Balagueró & Paco Plaza) S pain 2007 Odeon Sky Filmworks In 1965, at the height of the Cold War, Susan Sontag declared in her famous essay ‘The Imagination of Disaster’ that the world had entered an “age of extremity” in which it had become clear that from now until the end of human history, every person on earth would “spend his individual life under the threat not only of individual death, which is certain, but of something almost insupportable psychologically – collective incineration which could come at any time”. Sontag went on to claim that narratives in which this fate was dramatised for the mass audience in fantastical form – like the monster movies of the 1950s – helped society deal with this stress by distracting people from their fate and normalising what was psychologically unbearable: a kind of vaccination of the imagination, if you will. If this is the case, then Cloverfield, in which Manhattan is destroyed by an immensely powerful sea monster, George A. Romero’s latest zombie movie, Diary of the Dead, and claustrophobic Spanish hit [Rec] are not so much pre­emptive vaccinations against probable catastrophe, but intermittently powerful, if flawed, reminders of actual calamity. In all three films some of the most destabilising events and anxieties of the past decade – including 9/11 (and the fear of terrorist attacks striking at the heart of American and European cities), Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 Tsunami, and the SARS virus– are reconfigured as genre­based mass market entertainment.

Delving into a century of genre films that by turns utilized, caricatured, exploited, sidelined, and finally embraced them, Horror Noire traces a secret history of Black Americans in Hollywood through their connection to the horror genre. Tales from the Hood is an anthology film directed by Rusty Cundieff and executive produced by Spike Lee, comprising four political, urban-set horror stories. Feb 6—14 Race, Sex & Cinema: The World of Marlon Riggs Marlon Riggs (1957–94) created vibrantly expressive, innovative works that broke down the divide between documentary and personal essay to explore often taboo issues of race, sexuality, identity, and representation. It's the last day of shooting on George A. Romero's new thriller Bruiser , and the fickle weather has tossed the crew a bone in the form of a few hours of sunlight. Not that it matters to anyone—the location is deep inside the warehouse's airless recesses. The air inside is so thick and dark that it's a small mercy to surface into the fresher air outside. In a film that embraces metaphor, the secrecy and intensity surrounding the story being shot inside couldn't have a better frame than today's location.

    * " ' . k GEORGE A. ROMERO BIO Born on Feb. 4, 1940 in New York City, Romero became interested in filmmaking at a young age when he borrowed an 8mm camera from a wealthy uncle. Inspired by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's musical opera, "Tales of Hoffmann" (1951), Romero began making his own short films and was arrested at 14 years old after he threw a flaming dummy off the roof of a building while making "Man from the Meteor" (1954). While attending Suffield Academy in Connecticut, Romero made two 8mm shorts, "Gorilla" (1956) and "Earth Bottom" (1956); the latter being a geology documentary that won him a Future Scientists of America award. After graduating high school, he attended Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA where he earned his bachelor's in art, theater and design in 1960. Romero continued making shorts like "Curly" (1958) and graduated to 16mm films with "Slant" (1958), both of which he made with sometime collaborator Rudolph Ricci. Following work as a grip on Alfred Hitchcock's "North by Northwest" (1958), Romero shot the feature-length "Expostulations” (1962), a satirical anthology of loosely- connected shorts that showed hints of his later social consciousness. After forming the commercial and industrial production company, Latent Image, in 1963, Romero cobbled together $114,000 in order to direct his first feature film, "Night of the Flesh Eaters." Renamed "Night of the Living Dead" (1968) after landing a distributor, the unrelenting film - which was criticized at the time for its onscreen excesses - became a landmark cult film and significant social barometer that forever changed the horror genre.
