He drew post seven in the final and is listed at 9-2 on the morning line. • “Track was a little sticky tonight and he has aluminum shoes up front,” said Trainer Nancy Takter after his elimination. He would have been better if it was dry, but it is what it is. I’m not worried about him going into next week. We just have to get our job done.” • Came into the Pace off two straight overnight race wins at the Meadowlands in 1:48.4 and 1:48. He took is 1:48 mark on June 26th against older horses. • Previously, he head reeled off two straight wins at Pocono – one in the PA All Stars on May 8 in 1:50.1 and one in PASS on May 16th in 1:50.3, both at Pocono Downs. • Won his first two starts of the season in the Bobby Weiss Series at Pocono Downs in 1:50.2 and 1:52. He finished fifth in that final on April 24th. • “Nancy has done a good job of managing; there was no rush with him,” said Josert Fonseca, Takter’s second trainer. “We knew he had ability and potential, so they took their time with him. He’s a big horse and he just needed time. It looks like it’s been working the right way.” • Won his first start as a two year old at Pocono Downs in 1:53.1. He followed that up with a third at Harrah’s Philadelphia. He finished second in a leg of the Kindergarten Series at the Meadowlands before closing out his freshman campaign with an eighth place finish in the Bluegrass at the Red Mile. • Trainer Nancy Takter scored her first Meadowlands Pace win in 2020 with the outstanding Tall Dark Stranger. Her first Pace starter came in 2019 with Captain Crunch and the heavy favorite finished fourth. • “Maturity-wise, he’s gotten a lot smarter,” said Takter. “He knows what he’s doing. He’s so versatile now, you can leave with him or you can back him right down and he’s okay either way. I think that’s what I like most about him from last year to this year.” • Nancy Takter was voted 2020 Trainer of the Year by the United States Harness Writers Association (USHWA). With over $8 million won by her trainees and 31% victories, the horses in her stable seemed to almost never miss in the big events. The leader of the barn was Tall Dark Stranger, a three-year-old pacing colt who was voted Horse of the Year. He won 11 of 13 starts and earned $1,302,681, tops among all North American harness horses. The Meadowlands Pace, Cane Pace, North America Cup, and two Grand Circuit victories at Lexington all were taken by a horse who earned widespread praise from seasoned veterans for his fierce tenacity to hold on to the lead late when threatened with defeat. • Nancy also trains the great trotting mare Manchego, whose 1:49.3 victory at Plainridge Racecourse, a 5/8-mile track, was the sole sub-1:50 trot of 2020. There was also Kissin In The Sand, who capped her year with seven straight wins against the top older pacing mares including her Breeders Crown, Hambletonian Oaks champion Sorella and Governor’s Cup winner Always A Miki. • Tim Tetrick, 39, is looking for his sixth Pace win in 15 drives. His previous wins include: Southwind Lynx in 2010, One More Laugh in 2007, Captaintreacherous in 2013, He’s Watching in 2014 and Huntsville in 2017. • Tetrick was third in North America in wins with 511 and second in money earnings with $9,944,144. Tetrick finished 2020 with 11,944 career wins (sixth all time) and $227,837,438 (third all time). Fittingly, Tetrick was inducted into the Harness Racing Hall of Fame. • One Eight Hundred’s sire, the late and great Somebeachsomewhere, suffered his only career loss in the epic 2008 Pace, finishing second to Art Official in a world record of 1:47. “The Beach” has sired two Pace champions, Captaintreacherous (2013) and Huntsville (2017). .
