ANNUAL 2018 Report From Our Co-Founders

We want to express our thanks to all those who have lent their time, resources, and ex- pertise to the success of the Safe At Foundation since its founding in 2002. The healing work of our organization – to improve the lives of young people who have been exposed to violence and trauma – would not be possible without all of you standing firmly in our corner. We are more determined than ever to honor your support by sustaining our great progress. We founded Safe At Home on the belief that the innocence of children is a virtue that demands our protection. Because of you, we’re able to let children know that they are not alone - and to provide a safe environment where they can be heard and supported. And because of you, we are proud to say that we have impacted a generation of young people – 85,000 and counting through our program, Margaret’s Place, with more than 95% saying that they feel more hopeful about their futures. Safe At Home delivers school-based intervention and prevention services, and provides professional training and consultation on life-altering issues. Our comprehensive programming is aimed at young people between the ages of 11 and 18, with 15 sites across the country. With an emphasis on communication and the power of sharing, our approach mitigates long-term effects of exposure to violence. We help kids find their voice, develop confidence, and live with the hope of a better tomorrow. Those transformative results only inspire us to keep reaching more young people who need us. In our experience, the best teams are those on which everyone finds a way to contribute their unique talents, supports one another, and pulls toward a common goal. Safe At Home is blessed to have such a team in place – one that is forever committed to promoting healthy relationships, ending cycles of domestic violence, and ultimately saving lives. The donors, board members, partners, administrators, teachers, counselors, volunteers, and countless others who have decided to become a part of our mission have our eternal respect and gratitude. Your generosity will take Safe At Home into the future and will lift up thousands of deserving young people in the years ahead. Sincerely,

Ali & Joe Torre Our Impact Participant Snapshot: John

Safe At Home provides counseling and support to students in a school-based setting, coupled with building awareness among school staff, caregivers, and the wider community. In the 2017-2018 school year:

15 locations operated in John was excited to get involved with Margaret’s Place at his high school. 15 CA, NJ, NY and OH As a peer leader for three years, he savored the experience of building leadership skills and educating his classmates on important issues like teen dating violence, gun violence, and more. But when he was a senior, students ages 6-18 things changed. benefitted from 13,000 our program John had started dating, but this normal teenage activity reminded him of a traumatic experience from his childhood: being sexually assaulted by a family friend. He’d never revealed this experience to anyone. A few counseling sessions times, he’d thought about telling his family. But he was afraid they’d be 4,000 took place with our disappointed or angry with him. person he opened up to was our master’s-level counselors Margaret’s Place counselor. With time, John learned critical skills to help him stay connected, focused, and calm, including using art as a way to express his feelings positively said they feel more confident and safely. 91% or have better self-esteem Though John graduated earlier this year, our counselor connected him to a therapist near his college so he can continue his journey of healing. “Margaret’s Place is much more than a room. It is a force in shaping who we are. It says ‘We are determined to provide a respectful supportive environment for all members of our community. No one is alone.’ I cannot imagine my school without Margaret’s Place. It is and will continue to be part of who we are.” Patrick M. Burns, Principal, JHS 217 A. Van Wyck Our Keystone Event: The Annual Gala in City

Each year, we three signature events to showcase our accomplishments and celebrate our incredible supporters. It’s an opportunity to not just raise funds to support our work – providing healing to survivors of trauma – but also to connect with each of you as our closest friends.

Our keystone event – our Annual Gala in – took place in November. Nearly 400 guests – including celebrities, athletes, and industry leaders – braved the snowy, icy streets of New York to celebrate our 16th anniversary. We also honored Gina Boswell, the President of Customer Development at Unilever, for her continued partnership with Safe At Home and for Unilever’s efforts to promote self-esteem and healthy masculinities.

The evening included a panel discussion led by Joe Torre, who was joined by Dann Florek, , , , Michael Kay, , and . We ended the night in style with a 2+ hour after-party headlined by Dan Orlando. Together, our guests raised $1.3 million to support our work. A Year of Celebrating Our Supporters Our Annual L.A. Dinner and The Celebrity Golf and Classic We also brought the celebrations into 2018 with two other events. Our annual Dinner – now in its seventh year – was held on April 25, 2018. Nearly 200 guests gathered at the Hotel Bel-Air, raising more than $360,000 to support our local pro- grams. Guests enjoyed a panel featuring , Joe Torre, , , and – as well as special guests and Jon Rudnitsky. We also held our annual Celebrity Golf & Tennis Classic on July 26. This intimate all-day affair paired sponsors with a celebrity as they spent the day golfing or playing tennis. The evening concluded with a cocktail reception and dinner overlooking the beautiful Hudson River. At all of our events, our Margaret’s Place peer leaders shone through: giving speeches and presenting skits to help our guests understand why our work – and their support – is so important. We’d like to thank the committees, sponsors, and volunteers for making all of our events the toast of the town. To get involved at our next event, visit joetorre.org/events.
