Rao © 2015 Adriana Nicole Cerami ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Adriana Nicole Cerami: Mafia Motifs in Andrea Camilleri’s Detective Montalbano Novels: From the Culture and Breakdown of Omertà to Mafia as a Scapegoat for the Failure of State (Under the direction of Ennio I. Rao) Twenty out of twenty-six of Andrea Camilleri’s detective Montalbano novels feature three motifs related to the mafia. First, although the mafia is not necessarily the main subject of the narratives, mafioso behavior and communication are present in all novels through both mafia and non-mafia-affiliated characters and dialogue. Second, within the narratives there is a distinction between the old and the new generations of the mafia, and a preference for the old mafia ways. Last, the mafia is illustrated as the usual suspect in everyday crime, consequentially diverting attention and accountability away from government authorities. Few critics have focused on Camilleri’s representations of the mafia and their literary significance in mafia and detective fiction. The purpose of the present study is to cast light on these three motifs through a close reading and analysis of the detective Montalbano novels, lending a new twist to the genre of detective fiction. -

Gangster Glossary Words & phrases to help you out with your dealings at The Juice Joint A A friend of ours: mob shorthand for introducing one made guy to another made guy. “A friend of mine” is just another jamook on the street. Action: a bet that a bookie “writes” and for which you pay him his “vig.” Administration: the upper-level power structure of an organized crime Family, composed of the boss, underboss, and consigliere. Associate: an almost-there; someone who works with and for wiseguys, but who hasn’t been sworn in as a member of the Family. B Babbo: a dope, idiot, useless underling. Beef: a complaint or disagreement within the organization, usually discussed during a sit-down with higher-ups in the Family. Big earner: someone who makes a lot of money for the Family. A LOT of money. Books, the: euphemism for membership in the Family, since nothing is ever written down. When there is an availability (when someone dies), the books are “opened.” When no one is be- ing “made,” the books are “closed.” Boss: the head of the crime Family; he is the only one who gives permission to “whack” or “make” someone, and he makes money from all Family operations; synonyms: don, chair- man. Assassination Records Review Board Releases Transcripts of BriLab Conversations It has sometimes been suggested that organized crime figures may have played a role in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. One of the principal suspects of such a theory has been Carlos Marcello, the long-time head of organized crime in New Orleans. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy had launched deportation hearings against Marcello. In the late 1970s, the FBI investigated Marcello in an operation code-named “BriLab,” which stood for “bribery of organized labor.” As part of this “BriLab” investigation, the FBI conducted electronic surveillance for approximately eight months on Marcello’s home and on his office at the Town and Country Motel. Some writers have suggested that the “BriLab” tapes might contain conversations in which Carlos Marcello, or his brother Joseph, acknowledged that they were involved in the Kennedy assassination.1 Several members of the public urged the Review Board to examine BriLab records to determine whether this was true. Although the FBI Field Office in New Orleans maintains the tapes and transcripts from the BriLab surveillance, the tapes have remained under seal of the Federal District Court in New Orleans because they were made under the authority of 18 U.S.C. § 2501 et seq. (“Title III”).2 Thus, researchers and historians were unable to confirm or reject allegations that the tapes or transcripts actually contain information relevant to the assassination. In order to investigate this issue, the Review Board requested and obtained a court order from federal Judge Sears of the Eastern District of Louisiana, who granted members of the Review Board staff full access to all of the BriLab materials. -

Book Reviews Irno Scarani, Cronache di luce e sangue (Edizione del Giano, 2013), 128 pp. Nina Bjekovic University of California, Los Angeles The contemporary art movement known as Neo-Expressionism emerged in Europe and the United States during the late 1970s and early 1980s as a reaction to the traditional abstract and minimalist art standards that had previously dominated the market. Neo-Expressionist artists resurrected the tradition of depicting content and adopted a preference for more forthright and aggressive stylistic techniques, which favored spontaneous feeling over formal structures and concepts. The move- ment’s predominant themes, which include human angst, social alienation, and political tension reemerge in a similar bold tone in artist and poet Irno Scarani’s Cronache di luce e sangue. This unapologetic, vigorous, and sensible poetic contem- plation revisits some of the most tragic events that afflicted humanity during the twentieth century. Originating from a personal urgency to evaluate the experience of human existence and the historical calamities that bear everlasting consequences, the poems, better yet chronicles, which comprise this volume daringly examine the fear and discomfort that surround these disquieting skeletons of the past. Cronache di luce e sangue reflects the author’s firsthand experience in and expo- sure to the civil war in Italy—the highly controversial period between September 8, 1943, the date of the armistice of Cassibile, and May 2, 1945, the surrender of Nazi Germany, when the Italian Resistance and the Co-Belligerent Army joined forces in a war against Benito Mussolini’s Fascist Italian Social Republic. Born in Milan in 1937 during the final period of the Fascist regime, Scarani became acquainted with violence and war at a very young age.
