/ The Golden Anniversary ofthe Super Bowl: A Legacy 50 Years in the Making An Honors Thesis (HONR 499) by Chelsea Police Thesis Advisor Mr. Neil Behrman Signed Ball State University Muncie, Indiana May 2016 Expected Date of Graduation May 2016 §pCoJI U ncler.9 rod /he. 51;;:, J_:D ;l.o/80J · Z'7 The Golden Anniversary ofthe Super Bowl: A Legacy 50 Years in the Making ~0/G , PG.5 Abstract Originally known as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game, the Super Bowl has grown to become one of the largest sports spectacles in the United States. Cities across the cotintry compete for the right to host this prestigious event. The reputation of such an occasion has caused an increase in demand and price for tickets, making attendance nearly impossible for the average fan. As a result, the National Football League has implemented free events for local residents and out-of-town visitors. This, along with broadcasting the game, creates an inclusive environment for all fans, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of professional sports. This paper explores the growth of the Super Bowl from a novelty game to one of the country' s most popular professional sporting events. Acknowledgements First, and foremost, I would like to thank my parents for their unending support. Thank you for allowing me to try new things and learn from my mistakes. Most importantly, thank you for believing that I have the ability to achieve anything I desire. Second, I would like to thank my brother for being an incredible role model. -

PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn SEATTLE SEAHAWKS Team History When the Seattle Seahawks took the field for the first time in the 1976 season, it marked the culmination of a quest for a National Football League franchise that had its roots in the Pacific Northwest metropolis as early as 1957. That is when discussion first began about the possibilities of constructing a domed stadium that would assure a major league sports franchise for the city. On June 4, 1974, the NFL awarded its 28th franchise to Seattle to play in the 64,984-seat Kingdome. A civic suggestion campaign netted 20,365 entries and 1,741 different names, but “Seahawks” was selected and announced on June 17, 1975. Just a little more than two months later, after a 27-day sale, the season ticket campaign was shut off with 59,000 tickets sold. On January 3, 1976, Jack Patera, who had been a Minnesota assistant coach, was named the team’s first head coach. The Seahawks finished 2-12 in 1976, when they played in the NFC, and 5-9 in 1977, when they moved into the AFC. The Seahawks had winning 9-7 records in both 1978 and 1979 and Patera was named NFL Coach of the Year the second year. The strike-shortened 1982 season proved to be a transitional year for all of pro football, but no club fit the transitional description better than the Seahawks. Patera was removed after six-plus years as head coach. Mike McCormack finished the season as interim head coach and then was replaced in 1983 by Chuck Knox, who guided the Seahawks to an 83-67-0 record in nine seasons up through the 1991 campaign. -

LOS ANGELES CHARGERS vs. DENVER BRONCOS POSTGAME TRANSCRIPTS Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019 | ROKiT Field at Dignity Health Sports Park | Carson, Calif. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS HEAD COACH ANTHONY LYNN Opening statement: “Sorry for keeping you good people waiting. Sorry for [having to watch] that damn game. If we play like that, we won’t beat anybody. That team came here desperate for a win, played hard, out-coached us and it was disappointing — but we have a resilient group, I think. We will see how we respond next week but that was disappointing. This press conference will be really short, to be honest with you.” On Denver’s first two series: “They went straight down the field and scored on our defense. They played faster, they played harder.” On the consistency of the team: “I don’t see consistency right now and that’s my job — to keep this team consistent. To come out and play at a certain level.” On the decision to go for the touchdown at the end of the first half: “That was my decision, trying to create some momentum in this football team. Trying to get us a score before the half and come back out and get the ball again and get another score. I gambled and I lost.” On frustration after the game: “I mean, there’s been some frustrating games. Not many, but there’s been some.” On turnovers: “We’ve got to do a better job and take care of the ball at the goal line.” On how to fix goal line turnovers: “Well, we go back, we learn, we refocus and then we got out and we execute, and we work our tails off. -
DENVER BRONCOS EDITION Denver Broncos Team History
TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE DENVER BRONCOS EDITION Denver Broncos Team History The Denver Broncos have been one of pro football’s biggest winners since the merger of the American and National Football Leagues in 1970. The Broncos’ on-the-fi eld success is more than matched by a spectacular attendance record of sellout crowds (except for strike-replacement games) every year since 1970. Denver’s annual sale of approximately 74,000 season tickets is backed by a waiting list in the tens of thousands. The Broncos now play in the new INVESCO Field at Mile High which opened in 2001, but for 41 seasons played on the same plot of ground on which the original AFL team performed in 1960. This, however, is the only similarity of Denver teams of yesteryear and today. The upstart AFL was the target of many jokes and jeers by the established National Football League in the early 1960s, but the Broncos were the most laughed-at of all. Bob Howsam, a successful minor league baseball owner who built Bears Stadium in the 1940s, was awarded an AFL charter franchise on August 14, 1959. Severely limited fi nancially, Howsam clothed his fi rst team in used uniforms from the defunct Copper Bowl in Tucson, Ariz. Making the uniforms particularly joke-worthy were the vertically-striped socks that completed the Broncos’ dress. Two years later, when Jack Faulkner took over as head coach and general manager, the socks were destroyed in a public burning ceremony. While Denver’s on-the-fi eld experience during the 10 years of the AFL was for the most part bleak, the Broncos did have some bright moments. -

Terrell Davis
Terrell Davis Running back Terrell Davis was selected in the sixth round, 196th player overall, of the 1995 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. The little-known back made a big splash when earned a starting role at tailback as a rookie. He strung together four spectacular seasons before a devastating knee injury, that limited him to just 17 games over his final three seasons, prematurely ended his pro career. Davis, despite missing the final two games of his rookie campaign with a hamstring tear, eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark and also added a career-high 49 receptions for 367 yards in 1995. Davis improved his rushing total in each of the next three seasons. In his second year, he was named the Offensive Player of the Year when he ran for 1,538 yards and 13 TDs. Davis rushed for 1,750 yards and a league-high 15 TDs in 1997; and in 1998 became just the fourth runner in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season. He gained 2,008 yards and again led the NFL with 21 rushing touchdowns to spark the Broncos to a 14-2 regular season record en route to Denver’s second straight Super Bowl title. Davis shined in the Broncos biggest games as evidenced by him stringing together a NFL playoff record seven straight 100-yard performances spanning the 1997 and ’98 postseasons capped by Denver winning back-to-back Super Bowls. He opened the 1997 playoffs with a 184-yard effort against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Wild Card Game followed by 101 yards versus the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional playoff and 139 yards rushing yards in the win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game. -
