There was a red carpet and people on it, front page pictures, plenty of journalists and TV crews and photographers from all over Europe, big stars, Aperol Spritzes in the bars, spaghetti vongole in the busy restaurants and packed (or half-packed), indusTry double-spaced, pre-booked screenings in the famous old 1,000+-seater cinemas, morning, afternoon and night. For 11 days. Whisper it, but it felt a bit like normal. Even if you couldn’t air kiss actresses or afloaT shake hands with film makers, or recognise old friends in their mask-and- sunglasses ensembles. And so what if I saw several films from behind steamed-up specs until I worked out how to breathe a bit easier behind the mask? The films, let’s face it, weren’t the best selection Venice has ever offered. In recent years, the Lido has kicked off the Oscar race and awards season buzz with opening films such as La La Land and Gravity and Birdman, and hosted winners such as The Shape of Water, Brokeback Mountain and Roma, and premiered performances by Helen Mirren in The Queen, or Frances McDormand in Three Billboards..., or Joaquin Phoenix in Joker. -

Here’s our annual list of movies that could have festivals drooling in 2021. In the age of Covid-19, could has never felt more operative. With Sundance and Berlin reimagining their events next year, traditional festival paths are already diminishing, but here’s to hoping that the pandemic eases, and we get to see at least some of these anticipated movies in theaters and at marquee film events in the next 12 months. There is a bumper crop to choose from with so many having been held back or delayed from 2020. The Power Of The Dog Could Jane Campion, the first woman to ever win the Palme d’Or, be back in Cannes this year with her new drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, Kirsten Dunst and Thomasin McKenzie? That will of course depend on whether Netflix and the French fest can bury the hatchet on their disagreement over the streamer’s windowing policy, but either way this is going to be a hot festival title next year. Pic follows a pair of brothers who own a large ranch in Montana and are pitted against each other when one of them gets married. It’s based on the book by Thomas Savage. Producers include See-Saw, which was behind Campion’s Top of the Lake. The Lionesses and Olive Trees of Meiji-Era Japan: A Consideration of Kenneth Branagh's As You Like It Scott Hollifield, University of Nevada, Las Vegas Abstract In his film of As You Like It, Kenneth Branagh sets the action in Meiji-era Japan, incongruously situating Shakespeare's representation of feudal power struggles in a time and place noted for its relegation of feudal power struggles to the past. In this way, Branagh reduces Shakespeare's meaningful anachronism to incoherence and in the process, empties his chosen setting of historical and cultural significance. As You Like It (2006).
