  • Cincinnati Reds' Last Glory Year in 1990
Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings April 4, 2016 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1988-The Reds win on Opening Day for the sixth consecutive season, 5-4, in 12 innings over the Cardinals MLB.COM Glimpse of budding talent as Phils visit Reds By Chad Thornburg / MLB.com | April 2nd, 2016 + 17 COMMENTS Throughout every rebuilding process, there comes a point when a franchise begins to see results. Young prospects break through to the Majors. The lineup starts clicking, the pitching staff finds its groove. Soon, the wins start to accumulate. The Phillies and Reds are hoping 2016 is that year. Both organizations have fallen out of contention in recent years but are in the midst of significant rebuilds. There are many reasons to be optimistic about each club's future, starting with an Opening Day contest in Cincinnati on Monday at 4:10 p.m. ET. Right-hander Jeremy Hellickson will get the start for the Phillies in the opener, while 26- year-old righty Raisel Iglesias goes for the Reds. The Phillies roster that will take the field at Great American Ball Park features some promising youth -- including third baseman Maikel Franco -- with more talent potentially on its way among the Minor League ranks. "This is the most talent we've had in the four years I've been here," said Phillies director of player development Joe Jordan. "We got to see all of our big prospects ... together in big league camp this year, and they all represented themselves very well. There are a lot of good things happening." Opening Day will be a first for new Phillies manager Pete Mackanin, who has managed only on an interim basis prior to this season.

  • 2012 Rockies Minor League Preview
1 | P a g e Statement/Acknowledgements/Disclaimer Following a minor league system is endlessly fulfilling. Whether your big league team is competing for a division title or the first overall draft pick, there is always a minor league team and several prospects in every organization worth following. There is always someone to dream on, and in that way, it keeps that often short-lived spring optimism alive year-round. While minor league coverage is increasing constantly, it is still difficult to get involved cold. Here is your preview on all four minor league affiliates and the most notable prospects at each level. Every player in the system is above the Mensa level of baseball talent in the world. It feels insulting to leave out most players or to summarize an impact prospect in three inches of a column. On the other hand, this preview is 21 pages long and nearly 6500 words. I have not seen every player in this report with my own eyes, but I have seen a few of them. I relied on scouting reports from Baseball Prospectus, Baseball America, John Sickels, and other contacts I have made in prospect dialogue. Some information behind paywalls is alluded to but never excerpted directly. I also need to thank Greg Stanwood and Tim Zappe constructing and maintaining RockiesRoster.com, and to Mike Sjerven and Charlie Drysdale for letting me steal their pictures to provide color. Field diagrams were taken from each affiliate’s website, and park factors were taken from StatCorner.com. Team logos featured in this report are the registered trademarks of each featured organization.

  • A Hierarchical Bayesian Model of Pitch Framing Balls When the Yankees Were Pitching
    J. Quant. Anal. Sports 2017; 13(3): 95–112 Sameer K. Deshpande* and Abraham Wyner A hierarchical Bayesian model of pitch framing https://doi.org/10.1515/jqas-2017-0027 balls when the Yankees were pitching. Figure 1 shows two pitches thrown during the game, one by Astros pitcher Abstract: Since the advent of high-resolution pitch track- Dallas Keuchel and the other by Yankees pitcher Masahiro ing data (PITCHf/x), many in the sabermetrics commu- Tanaka. nity have attempted to quantify a Major League Baseball Both pitches were thrown in roughly similar locations, catcher’s ability to “frame” a pitch (i.e. increase the chance near the bottom-left corner of the strike zone, the rectan- that a pitch is a called as a strike). Especially in the last gular region of home plate shown in the figure. Accord- 3 years, there has been an explosion of interest in the “art ing to the official rules, if any part of the pitched ball of pitch framing” in the popular press as well as signs passes through the strike zone, the umpire ought to call that teams are considering framing when making roster it a strike. Keuchel’s pitch barely missed the strike zone decisions. We introduce a Bayesian hierarchical model to while Tanaka’s missed by a few inches.
