FC BARCELONA Futbol Club Barcelona also known as FC Barcelona and familiarly as Barça, is a professional football club, based in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Founded in 1899 by a group of Swiss, English and Catalan footballers led by Joan Gamper, the club has become a symbol of Catalan culture and Catalanism, hence the motto "Més que un club" (More than a club). It is the world's second-richest football club in terms of revenue, with an annual turnover of €398 million (2011). The unique feature of the club is that unlike many other football clubs, the supporters own and operate Barcelona. Jack Greenwell was the first fulltime club manager from 1917 to 1924 under which club grabbed 6 tournament honors. -

A Deep Learning Expected Possession Value Framework for Soccer
Decomposing the Immeasurable Sport: A deep learning expected possession value framework for soccer Javier Fernández Luke Bornn F.C. Barcelona Simon Fraser University, Sacramento [email protected] Kings [email protected] Dan Cervone Los Angeles Dodgers [email protected] 1. Introduction What is the right way to think about analytics in soccer? Is the sport about measured events such as passes and goals, possession percentages and traveled distance, or even more abstract notions such as mistakes (to quote Cruyff, “Soccer is a game of mistakes, whoever makes the fewer wins”)? Analytical work to date has focused primarily on these more isolated aspects of the sport, while coaches tend to focus on the tactical interplay of all 22 players on the pitch. Soccer analytics is lacking from a comprehensive approach that can start to address performance-related questions that are closer to the language of the game. Questions such as: who adds more value? How and where is this value added? Are the teammates creating spaces of value? When and how should a backward pass be taken? How risky is a team attacking strategy? What is a player’s decision- making profile? In order to make an impact on key decision-makers within the sport, soccer analytics requires a comprehensive tool to facilitate a continuous cycle of questions and answers with coaches. Analytic methods must therefore encapsulate a wide set of actions of interest to coaches to provide a detailed and flexible interpretation of complex aspects of the game. In this paper we develop such a model, measuring and elucidating instantaneous value on the pitch. -

Sergio. Busquets. ℞
MMsports.com Sergio. Busquets. ℞ [2011-12 Barcelona home jersey] Before getting down to Business, I've got to get some things out of the way: 1. I really like Sergio Busquets game. He’s got a tireless work rate and his midfield play allows Iniesta, Xavi, Leo (Lio?) and the rest of the crowd to dazzle. 2. Sergio's reputation as a drama queen is well earned. 3. I don't love this year’s barca shirts (especially the home one, which is the basis of this narrative.) 4. And I really don't like UNICEF being relegated to the back of the shirt. When deciding what player I wanted to use as the basis for this review, I immediately thought of two of my favorites, Carles Puyol and Andres Iniesta. Both excellent, high impact players (as we all know) with marquee game skill (go no further than the 2010 WC semi and final to emphatically support my point). But to weave an engaging narrative around them would be a challenge. Once I dispensed with the lesser known tidbits about Puyol’s pet goat (or some barnyard animal) and the Iniesta winery (I haven’t read a review, but from the price points I saw advertised I’m skeptical of the quality – I hope I’m wrong, because I want to like everything about the guy, but I’m concerned that he’s looking to capture the European Boone’s Farm market, which is not a good thing unless you are a heavy drinking college student), I’d be rehashing stuff that everyone already knows; Iniesta is a magician and Puyol is, well, Puyol. -
The Technician Interview: 2 Decade and a Half
NEWSLETTER FOR COACHES NO 47 | OCTOBER 2010 A Lesson Vicente Del Bosque in Humility here was so much to admire in Spain’s journey to the summit Tof world football during the 2010 World Cup: Vicente Del Bosque’s wise management, Xavi’s brilliant orchestration of the play, Andrés Iniesta’s incisive running with the ball, David Villa’s prowess in front of goal, and the goalkeeping exploits of Iker Casillas. But for those of us who observed the current World and European champions at close quarters, it was not only their football ability that impressed. Their human qualities, in particular the humility displayed by many of the Spanish players, gained them respect beyond their technical achievements. Was this positive behaviour just a lucky coincidence or was it the result of a culture within the Spanish game? It is easy to see that this successful generation of Spanish footballers are modest, unpretentious and happy to promote a “we” mentality. As Xavi stated during the World Cup: “We are a group of very normal, very hard working people who love the game.” The same can be said of their head coach, Vicente Del Bosque, who has won both the UEFA Champions League and the World Cup with his respectful, patient and unassuming style of management. What is not on public display is the process which has nurtured many of these gifted players, young men who have their feet firmly on the ground. As Fernando Hierro, sports director at the Spanish FA (the RFEF), and Ginés Meléndez, RFEF coaching school director, informed the participants at UEFA’s recent national coaches conference in Madrid, the aim in Spain is to educate talented youngsters to play, to compete and to develop a psycho- logical balance. -
