Drawing on the historical, sociological and anthropological research in the region, the course aims to question the stereotypes about the subordination of ‘Muslim’ women and to offer a systematic reading and an analytical discussion of the political, economic and cultural structures that inform femininity and masculinity in the region. The course will start with the examination of women in Islamic sources, then will move on to nationalist and modernization movements in the 19th and 20th centuries. Gender relations, women’s and men’s lives in contemporary Egypt, Turkey and Iran will be a central theme of the course. In this framework, we will also pay special attention to Islamist mobilization, family, sexuality, neoliberalism, women’s labor and the experiences of LGBT. Finally, we will discuss the role of women in recent uprisings and social change. This selective book list indicates the large number and wide range of published viewpoints available to lesbians and gay men interested in exploring their lives as spiritual journeys. Specifically excluded from the list of published resources are: novels and poetry; items written in languages other than English; brochures, study guides, and tracts; articles in periodicals; books exclusively addressing the spiritual dimensions of the AIDS epidemic or the experience of living with AIDS; doctrinal statements and position papers about gays and lesbians adopted by religious institutions; and blatantly homophobic treatments of the subject. Some of the books listed were produced by publishers affiliated with religious institutions, and many of the titles listed were not written by lesbians or gay men. Book titles are arranged alphabetically by title within the categories listed below. With a few exceptions, titles are listed in only one of the categories. Because not every title was examined, some titles may be inappropriately categorized, or could be categorized differently. Note: Electronic books are not included. Printed items of less than 100 pages are counted as pamphlets or booklets, and are, generally, not included. A select few of these short items are included and the number of pages is indicated.     ‘‘People are now coming out of the closet on the word empire,’’ said the conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer. ‘‘The fact is no coun- try has been as dominant culturally, economically, technologically and militarily in the history of the world since the Roman Empire.’’ The metaphor of coming out is striking, part of a broader trend of appropriating the language of progressive movements in the service of empire. How outrageous to apply the language of gay pride to a military power that demands that its soldiers stay in the closet.—Amy Kaplan, ‘‘Violent Belongings and the Question of Empire Today’’ introduction: homonationalism and biopolitics Both Krauthammer and his critic, the American studies scholar Amy Kap- lan, highlight the confluence of American sexuality and politics.∞ The com- ing out metaphor, which Kaplan later states is invoked incessantly by U.S. neocons to elaborate a burgeoning ease with the notion of the United States as an empire, is striking not only for its appropriative dissemination, but for what the appropriation indexes. On the one hand, the convergence marks a cultural moment of national inclusion for homosexuality, alluding to a par- ticular kind of parallel possibility for the liberated nation and the liberated queer. This sanctioning of the lingua franca of gay liberation hints that the liberation of American empire from its closets—an empire already known but concealed—will and should result in pride, a proud American empire. In this incisive piece, Kaplan astutely points to the necessary elisions of Kraut- hammer’s pronouncement, but unfortunately enacts another e√acement of her own.
