TONIGHT’S GAME The Flyers look to extend their winning streak to five games as they host the Boston Bruins in the first game of a two-game set that closes out a four- game homestand. This is the first repeat opponent for the Flyers this season, coming after the Flyers paid a two-game visit to Boston in their first road trip two weeks ago. Tonight marks the debut of the Flyers’ Adidas Reverse Retro jersey, unveiled as part of the leaguewide program during the offseason. This is also the first of two national TV appearances for the Flyers over the next three contests, coupled with Sunday’s trip to Washington, which is where the Flyers are headed after this set is complete.

FLYERS VS. BRUINS

This series marks the third and fourth of eight games between the clubs this season. Six of them are part of two-game sets, including these first four. After this set, the clubs will next meet in Lake Tahoe on February 21.

Thu. January 21 @ Boston 5-4 L (SO) Sat. January 23 @ Boston 6-1 L Wed. February 3 vs. Boston Fri. February 5 vs. Boston Sun. February 21 @ Boston (Lake Tahoe, NV) Sun. March 7 @ Boston Mon. April 5 vs. Boston Tue. April 6 vs. Boston

This will be the first season in which the Flyers and Bruins face one another eight times. The previous high was six, which took place in each of four consecutive years from 1968-69 through 1971-72. The Flyers didn’t win a game against Boston in the last three of those seasons, going 0-4-2 in 1969- 70 and 0-6-0 in each of the next two seasons. All four years were part of a stretch where the Flyers didn’t win a regular-season game in Boston from 1968-69 through 1975-76; their only win in Boston during that time was their historic victory in Game 2 of the 1974 Stanley Cup Final on an overtime goal by Bobby Clarke, which enabled the Flyers to win their first Stanley Cup with victories in the three games in Philadelphia.

Like Buffalo, this is the first time the Flyers and Bruins have ever competed in the same division. The Flyers were placed in the West Division with the other five teams from the 1967 expansion until 1974, when the Flyers were placed in the Patrick Division and the Bruins in the Adams Division for an alignment that lasted the next 20 seasons. In 1993, the Bruins shifted to the Northeast Division while Philadelphia went to the Atlantic, and that alignment stayed in place for another 20 years until the most recent realignment placed Boston in the Atlantic Division and the Flyers in the Metropolitan.

The Flyers have gone 2-1 against the Bruins in each of the last two seasons. You have to go back to the mid-1980s to find the last time the Flyers had an above-.500 record against Boston in two consecutive campaigns – they were 2-1 in four consecutive seasons from 1984-85 to 1987-88.

The March 10, 2020 loss to the Bruins was the final game of the 2019-20 season for both teams. That loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Flyers against Boston, something that they had never done before. Prior to a shootout win on January 13, 2020, the Flyers had never won more than three in a row against the Bruins.

SEASON SERIES Thursday, January 21, 2021 – Boston 5, Flyers 4 (SO) at TD Garden: The Flyers led 2-0 after two periods but got into a run-and-gun third period with the Bruins and left TD Garden with a 5-4 shootout loss in the first of two games in Boston. The scoring started when Travis Konecny tipped home his first of the year on the power play 6:17 into the second period, and James van Riemsdyk followed up with his first of two goals on the evening with 2:29 to play in the frame. Boston scored twice in 69 seconds to tie the score just over two minutes into the third; Travis Sanheim put the Flyers back on top with a deflected goal at 7:13, only to see Nick Ritchie re-tie the game on the power play at 13:22. Brandon Carlo gave Boston its first lead less than two minutes later, but the Flyers took advantage of their final power play opportunity when van Riemsdyk tied the game with 3:32 to play. After a scoreless overtime, Jake Debrusk was the only shooter to prevail in the shootout. Carter Hart stopped 39 of 43 shots in regulation and OT, while Tuukka Rask turned aside 22 of 26. Stars of the Game: 1 – Jake Debrusk; 2 – Nick Ritchie; 3 – Tuukka Rask.

Saturday, January 23, 2021 – Boston 6, Flyers 1 at TD Garden: Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron each scored twice to drive Boston’s win in the second game of the two-game set between the clubs. Bergeron started the scoring on the power play 8:09 into the contest; Kevin Hayes was able to tie things up just 1:14 into the second period, but the Bruins scored the next five goals. Carter Hart absorbed the loss with 20 saves on 26 shots, while Jaroslav Halak turned away 16 of 17 Flyers bids. Stars of the Game: 1 – Brad Marchand; 2 – Patrice Bergeron; 3 – Charlie Coyle.

LAST GAME

Sunday, January 31, 2021 – Flyers 4, NY Islanders 3 (OT) at Wells Fargo Center: Kevin Hayes scored a power play goal with just over 37 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Flyers their fourth consecutive win and second OT win in a row over the Islanders. Joel Farabee scored the Flyers’ three regulation goals for his first career hat trick, starting things off with 1:18 left to go in the first period. The Islanders answered on the power play just 38 seconds into the middle frame, but Farabee restored the advantage less than two minutes after that and then completed the hatty with 4:08 left to go in the frame to make it a 3-1 lead. But again the Islanders erased the two-goal advantage, getting goals from Josh Bailey 1:03 into the third period and from Mathew Barzal about 5 ½ minutes later to tie the score. Hayes picked up the OT winner with Barzal in the box for high-sticking. Brian Elliott took the win with 33 saves, while Ilya Sorokin turned away 25. Stars of the Game: 1 – Joel Farabee; 2 – James van Riemsdyk; 3 – Kevin Hayes.

Per NHL Stats &Information, Joel Farabee became the third Flyer in franchise history to record a regular-season hat trick before his 21st birthday, joining Mike Richards and Eric Lindros (4x). He is the second-youngest overall to record a hat trick.

The Flyers have won four games in a row inside the first 10 games of a season for the first time since the 2008-09 campaign. Like this season, the Flyers also won Games 7-10 that year.

At 7-2-1 for 15 points, the Flyers are off to their best 10-game start since the 2002-03 season, when they were 7-1-2 for 16 points after 10 games. It is only the 11th time in franchise history they have had 15 or more points through the first 10 games. The franchise record through 10 games is 17 points, done in 1981-82 and 1979-80.

James van Riemsdyk recorded his first career four-assist game and his second career four-point game. van Riemsdyk, Farabee, Philippe Myers and Scott Laughton were all plus-3. The mark ties a career high for Laughton (6th time), Farabee (2nd time) and Myers (2nd time).

Nick Leddy’s power play goal snapped a streak of 11 consecutive successful kills for the Flyers PK units. The penalty kill remains 14-for-15 over its past four games.

Kevin Hayes and Joel Farabee co-led the roster with four shots each. Hayes had a total of eight shot attempts.

Ivan Provorov played 30:05, marking his fourth regular season game of 30 minutes or more in his career. It’s his second this season after his career high of 30:46 set 10 days ago on Jan. 26 at Boston.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

James van Riemsdyk has five goals and eight assists for 13 points through the first 10 games, which equals his best 10-game start to a season in his career. He had two goals and 11 assists over the first 10 games of the 2009-10 season, his rookie campaign.

Flyers captain Claude Giroux is slated to play his 900th career NHL game tonight. He will become only the third Flyer in franchise history to appear in 900 games for the club, joining Bill Barber (903) and Bob Clarke (1,144). Next week, Giroux is scheduled to pass Barber for second place in games played. Giroux played his 611th game as Flyers captain last Tuesday, moving him past Clarke for the most games in the role in franchise history.

The Flyers have sprinted to their 7-2-1 record despite having the largest negative shot differential in the league. They have averaged 23.6 shots per game, second fewest in the NHL, and have allowed 33.7 shots per game, which is second-most in the league.
