President’s Message Lynn Armanino February 2016

February 23, 2016 is the state-wide Nevada caucus. Per Wikipedia, " Nevada has historically been a swing state. It has voted for the winner of every presidential election since 1912 except in 1976. From 1992 to 2004, the margin of victory was always five points or less." If you don't know where to caucus, go to http://nevadagop.org/ and click on Nevada Caucus, scroll down to where it says Click here for your location and enter your in formation. Nevada is expected to have 30 delegates at the 2016 Republican National Convention. The first step to becoming a delegate at the national convention starts with the caucus in Clark County. You can sign up to be a delegate prior to the caucus at http://clarkcounty.gop/delegate/. In February we will hold a straw poll at our luncheon where our guest speaker is Alan Stock. The timing is perfect as our February luncheon is also the day of the caucus.

SHRW is always saying how important it is to reach out to other communities. We have a wonderful opportunity to do so this month thanks to the efforts of one of our club members, Jan-Ie Low and www.CNYintheDesert.com. She says, "Our mission is to educate the community about the Asian American & Pacific Islander culture as it relates to the annual Lunar New Year and Chinese New Year celebration, including history, tradition, customs, arts, dance, & music. Our goal is to bring the largest Lunar New Year celebration in the US to the great city of Las Vegas; thus, promoting tourism and attracting the ever-increasing numbers of leisure visitors and giving our locals a taste of what the holiday is all about."

For the first time ever this year, CNY in the Desert will be held in multiple locations over a one-week period. Participating venues include: The LINQ Promenade, The Boulevard Mall, Downtown Container Park, Fashion Show Mall, and the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace! What's great is that is ALL FREE and open to the public. :-)

February is Black History Month. Interesting to note, the First African American Senator and Representatives were: Sen. Hiram Revels (R-MS), Rep. Benjamin S. Turner (R-AL), Robert DeLarge (R-SC), Josiah Walls (R-FL), Jefferson Long (R-GA), Joseph Rainey and Robert B. Elliott (R-SC), 1872, and they are all Republicans. The abolitionist, Frederick Douglass was a Republican. Hmmm. The Springs Preserve is celebrating Black History Month February 20th with live music and dance performances, food from local soul food restaurants, a historic black Las Vegas photo exhibit, and activities for the kids including arts and crafts, carnival games and face -painting.

The most important thing citizens of the United States can do is become informed about the people for whom they vote. "The Second Amendment only protects the people who want all the guns they can have. The rest of us, we've got no Second Amendment. What are we supposed to do?" This quote is by a 13-term congresswoman who has represented the upstate New York Rochester area in the House of Representatives since 1987. Personally, I like to think our elected Nevada Republicans are smarter and more educated than this statement paints the Democrats elected. The Nevada caucus is the beginning of our 2016 election process and it's our responsibility to elect the best Republicans we can! Stay tuned to our newsletter each month and you'll learn more about our guest speakers and candidate forums.

2 Campaign Management School in Las Vegas by Lynn Armanino

What a feather in our cap! Once again Las Vegas was the "first in the West" when we hosted the NFRW Campaign Management School on Friday, January 29, 2016. The pace was rapid; the information was thorough. There was so much to cover in one day our heads were spinning when it was all over. We learned the importance of messaging, the value of analysis and knowing how to target your efforts, how to find swing voters, the value of social media, how to talk to the press, the art of fund raising, the difference between campaign managers and campaign consultants, and, among everything else, how to work smarter not harder. And there was still more. I now realize the importance of hiring the right campaign manager and the value of being a team player. A professional Campaign Manager is worth their weight in gold. We all walked out of the training feeling that it was time well spent, we would attend the class again, and it was a hugely valuable experience. Some of the attendees were from California, Colorado, Wyoming and even upstate New York. The day was filled with information and directions for either campaigning or working with campaigns. One thing I'll share, when we talk to Democrats remember to be a HAPPY REPUBLICAN!

NvFRW Southern Leadership Conference 2016

The 2016 Leadership Conference was a roaring success. NvFRW President Lori Piotrowski open the conference and then NFRW president, Carrie Almond spoke to us about the Federation's efforts working in conjunction with the RNC to elect Republicans from the President on down. Carrie Almond was generous with her time and was an inspiration to us all. Regent members had met her the night before and we were quite impressed with her soft-spoken manner coupled with strength of passion and determination. So far 2016 is starting off with an exciting bang!

We were joined by Ed Williams, CCRP Chairman; Bobby Talbot, NV RNC; Sara Sendak, the NV RNC Communications Director; and, our guest speaker was Dana Walch, CEO of RedRock Strategies. There were four round tables geared to those members attending who do not sit on their clubs' boards but want to learn more regarding promoting our clubs and the press, grass roots efforts and how to be the most effective, voter registration and how to get around today's challenges and social media. Betty Rumford, president of Spring Mountain RW said "Kudos for the presentation on the Achievement Award. Nickie did a grand job… she explained the different rankings and how doable it is for every size Club to obtain the Diamond Award." Betty summed the day up with "Your speakers were the best!" Others comments were "Pleased with what I learned today." and "Keep doing what you're doing. The flow was really good this year." and "Glad there was a PAC update."

5 "Sometimes we have to take a break and just LAUGH." By Sydney Ingram

As we move forward in this campaign season it’s important for us to speak up for our candidates who support our beliefs. In this vein I want to inject a little humor about “speaking up.”

In Ben Carson’s book “America the Beautiful” he relates this incident. “A young businessman loved to buy exotic gifts for his mother on Mother’s Day, but was running out of ideas one year. About to give up, he encountered some amazing birds with the ability to dance, sing, and talk. He was so happy that he purchased two of them and couldn’t wait to ship them off to his mother.

On Mother’s Day he called her excitedly and asked, “Mother, what did you think of those birds?” “Mmmm” she answered, “they were good.” “Mother, you didn’t eat those birds!” he said, unable to contain his shock. “Those birds cost five thousand dollars apiece. They could dance, sing, and talk.” “Well,” she calmly replied, “then they should’ve said something.”

SO LET’S NOT FORGET TO “SAY SOMETHING” WITH OUR WORDS AND WITH OUR ACTIONS THIS CAMPAIGN SEASON.

Remembering Margaret Ostendorf, a member of SHRW since 2009, passed away on December 23, 2015. In Loving Memory Margaret suffered serious injuries as a result of a car accident as she and her husband Roger were on their way home from Cali- fornia in August. She fought courageously for four and a half months before succumbing to the injuries. During her years at SHRW, Margaret served on the Mem- bership Committee, welcoming and registering new members. The Ostendorf family is grateful for the many SHRW mem- bers who visited Margaret in the hospital, and are thankful for all your prayers and support.

It has been a year since I charged full steam ahead into the “unchartered waters” of the guardianship mess. At the time, there were so many unanswered questions I needed to find answers to, and find them fast, because each day those questions were peppered at me everywhere I spoke from all directions.

The most frequent; 1: How do private guardians find you? 2: Since I have a trust, or my daughter has my power of attorney, my attorney said I am safe. 3: How can a guardian seize my personal property?

1: I started by asking those questions at assisted living facilities, group homes, care agencies, and places that could have gotten me in hot water. However, “in for a dollar in for a dime,” I discovered that many of the guardians give gratuities, gift baskets, & pay-offs (one kind or another) to care facilities, care-givers, nurses aids, etc. to tip them off when there are people in hospitals and/or care facilities that may “need their services.”

They woo doctors who can “refer" potential clients to them. The doctors, in turn, if questioned, can always claim they had a duty to seek appropriate help for their patients. The guardianship commission now is discussing if this does or does not infringe on violating rules of HIPPA since at that point the guardian has not been appointed.

2: When guardianship (or even temporary guardianship) is granted by the court, your power of attorney is no longer valid. The guardian is given complete control of you by court order.

Therefore, I suggest, if you have given someone your power of attorney, always make them your “NOMINATED GUARDIAN” should the need ever arise. The "nominated guardian" provision was added by Senate Bill 262 which was passed in the 2015 legislative session thanks to the 3,000 plus petitions signed by our readers and the work of Senator Becky Harris. If you have a Nominated Guardian, the court must honor your request for that person.

3: How can a guardian seize my personal property? Again, this has been a topic of much debate within the Nevada Guardianship Commission due to privacy issue.

One of our commission members (a judge) has serious questions regarding the right of a guardian snooping into women’s purses, their homes, private documents and such –before they have been officially Margaret suffered serious injuries as a result of a car accident named as their guardian. She felt it infringed on their constitutional right to privacy. My big issue was safe deposit boxes. Because I have seen the worst side of private guardians and I know darn well there will as she and her husband Roger were on their way home from Cali- never be any restitution for what these families have lost, you must be made aware that this can happen She fought courageously for four and a half months to anyone - and you must protect yourself.

During her years at SHRW, Margaret served on the Mem- I can understand the need for a guardian to control a checking account in order to pay a “ward's” bills and obligations. However it seems to me that any savings should go into sealed accounts to be drawn on with court approval as needed. stendorf family is grateful for the many SHRW mem- Brokerage accounts, safe deposit boxes and other assets should be liquidated only as a last resort when it is absolutely determined that: (a) the ward will never return home, (b) passes away or (c) the family and ward agree to this determination. It is not a decision that a "stranger" should unilaterally make and should be by court order only.

As for me, my safe deposit box is now in my daughter’s name and we are both authorized signers….. LOL, on a personal side, I can sleep easy knowing all the pretty treasures my mother passed to me will end up in my daughter’s and granddaughter’s hands and not in the hands of strangers. 7
