Last Time Out:

In their last outing, the Keydets used a strong second-half performance and their best free-throw shooting night of the season to score a 93-84 victory over Richmond on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at the Robins Center.

The road win came nearly a year to the day since the team’s last triumph in an opponent’s arena, since defeating Towson on Dec. 21, 2005.
Prince George native Reggie Williams, currently the nation's third-leading scorer, did not disappoint in his homecoming game, as he led all scorers with 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Travis (19 pts.) and Chavis (18 pts., 7 reb.) Holmes combined for 30 of the team's 53 second-half points, after combining for only seven in the game's first period. Senior Matt Murrer, also playing in front of a home crowd, chipped in with 16 points and five rebounds.
But it was the Keydets' prowess from the freethrow line that paid huge dividends, as the team not only hit a season-best 23-of-26 (88.5%) from the charity stripe, but also made seven of eight in the final 1:43 to seal the victory.

VMI and Penn State met in ‘95-‘96 and ‘97-‘98, then finished the last of a three-year series contract in ‘98-‘99. The Nittany Lions claimed two of the three games, taking both contests played in State College while the Keydets prevailed in Lexington. PSU defeated VMI, 99-73, at Rec Hall on November 30, 1995, but two years later, the Keydets bagged their only win over a Big 10 opponent in school history when they knocked off the Nittany Lions, 71-68, at Cameron Hall on December 14, 1997. Head coach Duggar Baucom is currently in his second season at the helm of the VMI Basketball program. A 1995 graduate of Charlotte, Baucom returns to the sidelines following a tumultuous first season in Lexington. He was sidelined for seven conference games last January due to a surgical procedure, but is back at 100% for this year’s campaign. He will look to get back to the winning ways he enjoyed as head coach at Tusculum, when he accrued a 37-19 record in two seasons with the Pioneers, including the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth.
VMI's high-flying tempo which has the Keydets averaging a nation's best 101.4 points per game is largely due to the amount of turnovers forced and steals generated per contest. Through 14 games, VMI is forcing 29.6 turnovers per game and averaging 16.0 steals per game. VMI has forced more turnovers than its opponent in all but one game this year, and has piled up more steals than the opposition in all but two games this year.

However, Baucom was no stranger to the
Despite a 6-8 mark, the Keydets have been in

just about every contest this season. VMI went winless on a five game road swing in late November-early December, but you can’t say the Keydets didn’t compete. VMI dropped the five games by a margin of 4.2 points. Included in the string were two-point losses to James Madison (89-87) and Jacksonville State (87- 85). In games decided by five points or less this season, VMI is 0-6 after falling 105-103 to Mercer at home.

Back to Work:

After extended breaks for exams and the holidays, VMI rolls back into action Saturday afternoon against Penn State. It will be only the second game VMI has played in 19 days and the first in 10 days since the Keydets knocked off Richmond, 93-84, on the road on December 20. After the PSU game, VMI will have another week to prepare for the Jan. 6 road opener at Winthrop. VMI has won three of its last four.

Mr. 1,000:

With his school-record 45-point outing against
Virginia Intermont November 15, junior forward Reggie Williams became the 30th member of the VMI 1,000-point club, doing so by scoring the first two baskets of the contest. Since then, Williams has moved all the way up to 15th on the school's scoring list with 1,305 points, as he now stands just 11 points shy of overtaking Norm Halberstadt for 14th all-time.
In 68 career contests, Williams has averaged
19.2 points per outing, eclipsing the 20- point mark 27 times while topping 30 points eight times. He is the only Keydet to twice go over the 40-point mark, as he has done so twice already this season. His 41 points against Cornell in the William & Mary Tip-Off Classic is tied for the third-most by a Keydet and helped him snag All-Tournament honors at the event.
A Second-Team All-Conference performer last year, Williams also earned All- Freshman team honors two years ago, as he led the team in scoring with 15.5 per outing.

Keydets Net Road Win:

VMI’s 93-84 win at Richmond was the Keydets first on an opponent’s floor in since an 80-78 win at Towson on December 21, 2005. The span of road futility before the Richmond triumph covered 12 games. The Keydets were able, however, to secure a win away from Cameron Hall this season prior to the Richmond game when they defeated South Dakota State, in a neutral setting, 104-89, in the BCA Classic.

High Velocity:

With its high-flying tempo, VMI continues to lead the nation in scoring with a 101.4 points per game average. In 14 games this season, the Keydets have surpassed the century mark in scoring six times this year, and missed a seventh time by one-point. In the ten years prior to this season, VMI had eclipsed the 100-point plateau in a game just seven times.

Keydets Among the Nation’s Leaders:

Thanks in large part to their new system of play, the Keydets currently rank among the nation’s leaders in several categories. Among the marks (Rankings as of Dec. 28):

Finding the Mark:

After a dismal free throw shooting performance in which the Keydets missed 24 free throws in a 105- 103 loss to Mercer December 9, VMI has snapped to nicely by going 75% from the charity stripe (51-68) over the last two games, including a season-best 23 of 26 (88.5%) in the 93-84 win over Richmond December 20.

Closing In:

VMI's 93-84 victory over Richmond Dec. 20 was the Keydet's sixth win of the season over 14 games and moved them closer to matching their overall win total of 2005-2006 when VMI struggled through a 7- 20 campaign.

156?!?!?:

When VMI tipped off against Virginia Intermont on Wednesday, Nov. 15, there is no doubt that neither team nor the fans in attendance had any idea what they were in for. When the final horn sounded, no less than 24 records had fallen for VMI, including points in a game by an individual and team, points in a half, and several field goal marks. Each of the records listed below were both a new Cameron Hall record, as well as a new VMI school record. VMI hoisted 45 three-attempts on Nov. 22 at
JMU, setting a new Convocation Center facility record. On Nov. 28, VMI eclipsed Army’s Christl Arena record with 43 trey attempts, while on Dec. 1 against Cornell at the William & Mary Tip-Off Classic, the team’s 19 threes made on 54 attempts each broke Kaplan Arena records as well.
The Keydets established yet another new school and Cameron Hall record by making 22 three-pointers against Lees-McRae, besting the three-week old mark of 21 set against Virginia Intermont. The 22 made 3’s are the most by a Division I team this season and eighth-most in NCAA Division I history.

Just five days after the Nov. 15 record book tsunami in which 24 VMI basketball marks fell, one of those benchmarks was set again as VMI knocked off Southern Virginia University, 144-127, on Nov. 20 at Cameron Hall.
In the team's first 14 games, the Keydets averaged 101.4 points on 84.7 shots, collecting 20.9 assists and 16.0 steals per outing. From beyond the arc, the Keydets are averaging 45.1 attempts per contest, hitting on 14.5 of those.
Last season, VMI averaged 71.3 points for the year, 14.2 assists, 7.3 steals, and averaged 57.4 shots per game.

The 271 total points overtook the "old" record of
251 points set just five days earlier at Cameron Hall when VMI overwhelmed Virginia Intermont, 156-95.
VMI placed five players in double figures in the win. Junior forward Reggie Williams scored 36 points to lead the Keydets followed by sophomore guard Chavis Holmes with 28 points. Other double-figures efforts came from senior forward Matt Murrer with a career-high 25 points and freshman point guard Adam Lonon with 10 points.

Here’s to You, Mr. Robinson:

Maybe no player has enjoyed the team’s uptempo style of play this season more so than senior guard Fred Robinson. After posting a career-high 16 points against #4 Ohio State on Nov. 10 on 4-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc, Robinson hit 7-of-13 attempts from distance to post another career-high total of 24 points against South Dakota State. The seven three-pointers made tied a VMI school record that had been achieved three times previously, once by Lawrence Gullette and twice by Ramon Williams. Aside from his scoring, he also had six steals, tying a BCA Classic record and tying the fourth-highest total in Keydet history.

So far this season, the Keydets have showed that they aren’t afraid to shoot the three. Twice on opening weekend, against #4 Ohio State and in the win over South Dakota State, the Runnin’ Roos hoisted up 47 three-point attempts, converting on a season-high 17 against the Jackrabbits.

However, those school-record totals did not last long. Against Virginia Intermont, VMI attempted 61 three-pointers, sinking 21 of them, as each of those marks were among the ten team school records established in the contest.
Starting all but three games this season,
Robinson is averaging 11.6 points per outing, while his 39 3-pointers are the second-most on the team and his 30 steals place him third on the team. In his previous three seasons at the Institute, Robinson has they want to be regarded as the best of those duos though. The Williams’ combined for 3,252 points (Ramon- 1,630, Damon- 1,622), and currently rank third and fourth on the VMI career scoring list, while Ramon still stands as the career leader in 3-pointers made (206), 3-pointers attempted (482) and 3-point percentage (42.7%).
