Our Libraries Provide Valuable Help in Hard Economic Times

Everything from doing an Internet job search to retirement planning “More and more patrons come into the library to fill out online applications, and many times the company’s web site isn’t very helpful for those not familiar with computers. Just last week a woman came in who was in tears she was so frustrated,” reports Merchantville Branch Library Manager Eve Brown.

It’s a rough economy and the job market is growing tougher each day for thousands of local residents seeking work. For the first time in their lives, many are confronting the prospect of seeking employment in the digital age, having to search for job openings on the Internet, complete online applications and post resumes on websites or send a resume as an attachment via e-mail. It can be bewildering, frustrating and even paralyzing for those not familiar with the digital age and its technology.

Consequently, the Camden County Library System is offering special programs designed to help job seekers and consumers discover help and explore pos- sibilities through the resources and staff of its six branches. We are offering workshops, presentations and panel discussions by local professionals on a wide variety for topics – everything from conducting an effective job search in the digital age to planning for your retirement and everything in between.

Camden County Library Wins Big Grant for Teen Space Project Funding to develop special place dedicated to teen interests and tastes The Camden County Library System is proud to announce it has been awarded a $40,000 grant to create a special 1245 square foot teen space dedicated to meeting the needs, interests and tastes of teenagers on the first floor of the M. Allan Vogelson Branch Library in Voorhees. Construction is expected to start by early June and be done in the fall. The South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative will provide $40,000 in funding, which includes a $10,000 special grant from the New Jersey State Library, to complement $35,900 committed by CCLS.

Vogelson was selected for the grant because it has a very active Youth Services Department that provided over 90 teen programs in 2008 ranging from a murder mystery party, a hip-hop dance presentation, special book clubs, anime clubs and gaming clubs all geared toward teens. The Youth Services Department is sup- ported by a combination of seven full time or part time professional library staff specifically trained to work with teens and ‘tweens’.

“At SJRLC, we were tremendously impressed with the Camden County Library System’s proposal for the outstanding space and services that they have planned for their teen community,” said South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative Director Karen Hyman. “Teens can’t be asked to wait, especially in tough financial times, for a fun, free and safe space with access to new and creative technology, room to collabo- rate, and the kinds of things they want to read.”

The new space will offer an appealing and safe place for teens to gather, do homework, meet and chat with friends or use a computer. Among the features designed to attract young people are internet computers, graphic novels, a 52” flat screen television to accommodate gaming equipment, and comfortable and casual furniture, all in an area clearly defined and reserved for teens and teen activities. A preview of a new special space coming soon at The winning application was prepared by Jennifer Druce, Coordinator of Children’s Services for the Vogelson just for teens! System, and head of Vogelson Youth Services Department; Christen Orbanus, Vogelson Teen Librarian; William Brahms, Vogelson Branch Manager; and Diana Fults, South County Library Associate.

New Library Commissioners Patrick Abusi and Robert Weil join Library System’s governing body

The Camden County Library System is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Commissioners to the Library Commission in January.

Robert Weil joins the Commission as a ten-year resident of Voorhees. Mr. Weil is employed as Assistant Vice President of Employee Benefits Consulting at Connor Strong in Cherry Hill. He noted how his wife, Alison, and three sons, Bobby, Matt Robert Weil and Zach, enjoy the library. “My family uses the resources of our great county library system, and I am honored to serve on the Library Commission.”

Mr. Patrick A. Abusi, certified municipal finance officer, joined the South Jersey Port Corporation in October 2006 as treas- urer. Prior to this he worked for Railroad Construction Co. of South Jersey, Inc. and is currently the treasurer of The Greater Paulsboro Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Board of Directors for Barrington Federal Credit Union and as treasurer for Gloucester County Boys and Girls Club.

As new a commissioner, Abusi commented, “Libraries are the gateway to the world where people of all ages can gather to use literary, musical, artistic and various other available resources. I am look forward to being a part of the Camden County Library System and hope my experience in both the public and private sectors is a plus for the board,”
