We’re getting into a few free shows and people are starting to send in CD’s for us to review. We’ve got a lot of new people pitching in to make this rag better than ever. Emily Kendy joins us from Vancouver and brings with her a very impressive resume (The Nerve, Discorder, Terminal City, Exclaim...). We’ll be featuring a different Vancouver based band each issue starting with scum punks the Excessives. With the new Arena and Rod Stewart having played Victoria, you can just feel that this is going to be a great year for live music around town. I’m always impressed with the turnout and energy of the younger crowds at the all-ages shows. Even if you’re old you should go check one out sometime. You might find it invigorating to jump in a circle pit of mohawked fury. It was great hanging out with the crew at Spitfire Tattoo special thanks to Rick and Amanda. Electric Frankenstein was an amazing show and just proves that Victoria gets wicked shows all the time. A big middle finger to the asshole bouncers @ Diego’s who wouldn’t let me in even though I was on the guest list and then proceeded to tell the headlining act CHOKE to “pack their shit, they weren’t going to play.” This was after two huge idiots working the door beat up CHOKE’s drummer who weighs about a buck ten soaking wet. -

ARTICA HISTORY OF GUNS LA MAMOYNIA THE DAUGHTERS OF BRISTOL THE HOUSE OF USHER THOSE POOR BASTARDS THOSE POOR BASTARDS have created two stunning records in the ‘Country Bullshit’ EP and ‘Songs Of Despera- tion’ album, which introduce you to stories of murderous scumbags and lives of desolation, so don’t be put off by the country tag if that was unsettling your bowels. These are songs so rich in character they are melodic bank vaults just waiting to be torn open. Also, they don’t have any photos, so you’ll forgive my improvising but you need to know about this band now, so I chose not to wait. Is Dark Country the new Punk, Rock ‘n’ Roll or, at a Shame is what fuels the Minister. That fella refuses to show his pinch, the new Country? face ‘cause he believes to do so is vanity. He believes all eyes should be directed toward God and he sees his role as a Dark country is real country. Lord knows. Country was meant faceless messenger. A real holy roller... to be the music of the working class and poor…the outcasts and the nobodies. Somehow it has become the music of the Blind Boy doesn’t seem too keen on showing his face. Are status quo. Turn on the radio and you’ll hear a bunch of your colleagues, perhaps, horribly disfigured? Metal Madness: An Interview with Kingsmen Tanner Guimond Welcome to Metal Madness my fellow metalheads, covering all things metal, metalcore, deathcore and hardcore in the Providence area. I recently had the privilege of talking to Kingsmen, one of Providence’s premier melodic deathcore acts. This five-piece is made up of former members of Fortune Favors the Brave and Scriptures. The band has been around since 2016, and since its inception, Kingsmen have garnered a large fanbase and signed with Extreme Management Group, known for managing such acts as Suffocation and Rings of Saturn. If you’re into crushing breakdowns, searing melodic vocals and overall death-core madness, this is the band for you. What you notice at a Kingsmen show, apart from the raw talent and stage presence, is that for a band that hasn’t been around for a long time, they play like a seasoned band that’s been on the road for years. That comes from the dedication that the band has to their art. I caught up with lead singer Tanner Guimond Sunday night at Fete Musical hall where the band was headlining a show. Erik Nivison (Motif): How did you get together? Tanner Guimond: It all kinda happened four or five years ago. So Dylan Robertson and I were in Fortune Favors the Brave, and Frank, Adam and Tim were in a band called Scriptures. We did a couple of shows together during a weekender run, it was kinda like after going out we realized we had some chemistry. After those bands fell apart Tim (lucier guitar) reached out to me and we brought Dylan in and wrote a few songs. -

There would be no Nirvana, Beastie Boys or Red Hot Chili Peppers were it not for hardcore pioneers such as Black Flag, Bad Brains and Minor Threat. Hardcore was more than music—it was a social movement created by Reagan-era misfit kids. The participants constituted a tribe unto themselves—some finding a voice, others an escape in the hard-edged music. And while some sought a better world, others were just angry and wanted to raise hell. AMERICAN HARDCORE traces this lost subculture, from its early roots in 1980 to its extinction in 1986. While publishing continues to be a major point of commerce within the music industry, the model of writing large pools of songs and then shopping them to potential music artists and producers has diminished, while shopping songs to film and video has increased. However, the Nashville songwriting culture maintains an industry of songwriter-led creation, while struggling with changes in the industry and modes of production. While the Nashville market is undergoing change, this performance will be in the traditional “songwriters in the round” setup in order to display the songwriter culture that has persisted in Nashville since the beginning of the recorded music industry. One round of songs by each songwriter will be followed by a moderated discussion concerning the creative process, the signifiers of Nashville musical output, and how the changes in monetary compensation impacts their art. A selection of up to three songwriters will be chosen for this performance/discussion.
