As well as adjusting to unprecedented change, we continue to develop and innovate, as a group of four gal- leries linked together within a single organisation. • One exciting area of growth has been Tate Online – tate.org.uk. Now the UK’s most popular art website, it has won two BAFTAs for online content and for innovation over the last two years. In a move that reflects this development, the full Tate Biennial Report is this year published online at tate.org.uk/tatereport. This printed publication presents a summary of a remarkable two years. • A highlight of the last biennium was the launch of the new Tate Boat in May 2003. Shuttling visitors along the Thames between Tate Britain and Tate Modern, it is a reminder of how important connections have been in defining Tate’s success. • Tate is a British institution with an international outlook, and two appointments from Europe – of Vicente Todolí as Director of Tate Modern in April 2003 and of Jan Debbaut as Director of Collection in September 2003 – are enabling us to develop our links abroad, bringing fresh perspectives to our programme. -

Ian Davenport Recent Paintings,Works on Paper and Prints Exhibition 31 August - 27 October 2012 „I control liquid, I use colour, and I try to choreograph these different elements together. There’s a lot of internal rigour to the process, but at the same time it is about chance.“ Ian Davenport Farben und ihre Energien faszinieren Ian Davenport. Sie bilden die zentralen Elemente seiner künstlerischen Arbeit. Mit einer am oberen Bildrand angesetzten Spritze lässt Davenport – Streifen für Streifen – Acrylfarbe über eine dünne Aluminiumfläche nach unten fliessen. Die lückenlos aneinander gereihten Farbtöne erzeugen kraftvolle Kompositionen, die durch ihre dichten Farbkombinationen unterschiedliche Energien spürbar werden lassen. Die Werke des britischen Künstlers muten zugleich minimalistisch-konzeptionell und spielerisch-spontan an, indem neben der kompositorischen Umsetzung auch Zufall und Zeit einen wichtigen Anteil an ihrem Entstehungsprozess haben. Gerade diese Gegensätze – sowie die unkonventionelle Art, mit Farben zu arbeiten – haben mich vom ersten Moment an in ihren Bann gezogen. Umso mehr freut es mich, das Werk des herausragenden Künstlers der Young British Artists und ehemaligen Turner Prize Nominee erstmals in der Schweiz zeigen zu dürfen. Mein ganz spezieller Dank gilt Ian Davenport, der eigens für die Ausstellung in Zürich neue Werke geschaffen hat, sowie Alan Cristea und Leslie Waddington, die diese Ausstellung ermöglicht haben. Ian Davenport is fascinated by colours and their energies, which form the core elements of his art. Davenport‘s way of working with colour is unconventional: placing a paint-filled syringe at the top edge of his „canvas“ – a thin sheet of aluminium – the artist allows acrylic paint to flow downwards, one thin band of colour immediately adjacent to the other. -

We arranged to Quick, Slow, Quick Quick, Slow… meet early in the morning so that he could take an afternoon walk in the country afterwards and a celebratory country pub lunch. I am always taken somewhat by surprise at the thought of a London point of departure for a country walk, especially one within yards of the bustle of Peckham High Street and from an artist whose body of work has consistently been sited within a discourse of the urban and the street. -

g a l l e r y e l e n a s h c h u k i n a Balraj Khanna Balraj Khanna was born in the Punjab in 1940, and studied for an English Masters at Punjab University in Chandigarh, Northern India before coming to England in 1962 to study English Literature at Oxford University. However, due to the turmoil caused by the war between India and China, he was unable to continue his studies. It was this twist of fate that led him to painting, eventually becoming, in Bryan Robertson’s words, “one of the most distinguished painters living in England.” Entirely self-taught, Khanna is a highly original artist whose work encapsulates his own aesthetic approach and vision of life. He has developed a unique language of abstraction inspired by his childhood, nature, and concepts of creation. Khanna’s painterly world is populated by brightly coloured toys and puppets, joyfully boyant in shimmering seas of colour. The inclusion of sand, which Khanna mixes with the primer, and a meticulous spray technique, allow Khanna to achieve finely textured, luminous grounds where cut-out figures float weightlessly. Khanna has been an influential player in the art world for over 50 years, as an artist, Indian Art expert, and curator. He is the author of one of the largest public artworks in the UK, the Curtain commissioned by Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre, was the curator of a series of seminal Hayward Gallery touring exhibitions of historic and contemporary Indian art, and his work was included in the celebrated TATE exhibition Artists and Empire. -
