  • HBO Leads 60Th Primetime Emmys 30 Rock, Mad Men Take Top Series September 21, 2008
HBO Leads 60th Primetime Emmys 30 Rock, Mad Men Take Top Series September 21, 2008 A 1960s advertising agency, a fictional sketch-comedy show and the second president of the United States were among the big winners at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards. Among the twenty-eight awards handed out over the course of the Television Academy’s diamond anniversary event, which was telecast live on ABC, HBO topped the night with 10 winged statuettes. NBC followed with four. Combined with its awards at last Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmys, HBO led for the year as well, with 26 in all. Leading the recipients of multiple awards between the two awards ceremonies was HBO’s seven-part historical miniseries John Adams, with 13 Emmys, surpassing a miniseries record set by another HBO production, Angels in America, which won 11 in 2004, and ABC’s Eleanor and Franklin, which won 11 in 1976. It was an evening of milestones and memories. Among the September 21 ceremony’s firsts: the Primetime Emmys’ debut in their new venue, NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE, in downtown Los Angeles. In another landmark, 2008 was the first time an Emmy was awarded for outstanding host for a reality or reality-competition program. The five nominees, Tom Bergeron (Dancing with the Stars), Heidi Klum (Project Runway), Howie Mandel (Deal or No Deal), Jeff Probst (Survivor) and Ryan Seacrest (American Idol) — commemorated the new category by hosting the festivities. In addition, a new record was set for consecutive wins in a single category when Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart prevailed as outstanding variety, music or comedy series and CBS’s The Amazing Race was named outstanding reality-competition program.

Bilko, M*A*S*H and the Heyday of U.S. Military Sitcoms (1955-75) Dennis Tredy 1 If the title of this paper quotes part of the refrain from Edwin Starr’s 1970 protest song, “War,” the song’s next line, proclaiming that war is good for “absolutely nothing” seems inaccurate, at least in terms of successful television sitcoms of from the 1950s to the 1970s. In fact, while Starr’s song was still an anti-Vietnam War battle cry, ground- breaking television programs like M*A*S*H (CBS, 1972-1983) were using laughter and tongue-in-cheek treatment of the horrors of war to provide a somewhat more palatable expression of the growing anti-war sentiment to American audiences.

  • “The End of Racism and the Last Family: the Cosby Show's (1984-1992
“The end of racism and the last family: The Cosby Show’s (1984-1992) Fukuyaman neo-liberal children” Both popular and academic discourses on The Cosby Show have focused on the eponymous family’s post-racial representation. Challenging historically negative television and film depictions of the African American as an exotic and/or savage ‘Other’, the program’s upper middle-class professional family presented 1980s white America with an image of blackness that had been fully assimilated into hegemonic culture. Academic analyses of this acculturation have considered both the impact of this ostensibly positive depiction of the black family for white audiences,1 and the subtle traces of African American social and cultural experiences which appealed to black audiences.2 Discourses about the show’s children have also positioned the characters’ relationships with their white contemporaries within a post-racial context,3 so that they undergo the same kind of bildungsroman angst and trajectory as other, whiter, 1980s coming-of-age narratives, without any particular experience rooted in racial difference. This essay situates the show’s children within a wider post-racial context that dominated American political and social culture during the period 1984-1992 when the show ran. This was the era of triumphant Reaganomics, punctuated by the fall of the Berlin Wall, and bookended with Francis Fukuyama’s influential panegyric to neo-liberalism’s victory over every other possible form of ideology, The End of History and the Last Man4. The Cosby Show’s professional American nuclear family is post-racial not only because of the gradual impact of socio-cultural and legal developments emanating from the Civil Rights movement.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Neoliberalism, Citizenship, and the Spectacle of Democracy in American Film and Television, 1973-2016 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television by Alice Elizabeth Royer 2018 © Copyright by Alice Elizabeth Royer 2018 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Neoliberalism, Citizenship, and the Spectacle of Democracy in American Film and Television, 1973-2016 by Alice Elizabeth Royer Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2018 Professor William McDonald, Co-Chair Professor Johanna R Drucker, Co-Chair This dissertation examines American films, miniseries, and television shows that center on the democratic process, mobilizing it in the service of stories that both provide intense narrative and visual pleasures, and offer satisfaction in the form of apparent knowledge gained about the inner workings of electoral politics in the United States; these media texts are here theorized as “democracy porn.” Significantly, democracy porn emerges alongside neoliberalism, and its proliferation mirrors that ideology’s meteoric rise to prominence. As such, the dissertation considers texts made since the advent of neoliberalism in 1973, and up to the US presidential election of 2016, which marks a major shift in the meanings and values associated with democracy porn. Through historical, textual, and discourse analysis drawing on critical theories of affect, citizenship, and neoliberalism, the dissertation interrogates the complex ways in which democracy porn is constructed and functions within and surrounding moving image ii texts. The project thus tracks the ways neoliberal ideology manifests in the media texts in question, as well as how the consumption of these texts impacts viewers’ understandings of their own citizenship within a democracy increasingly steered by neoliberal principles.

  • The Phil Silvers Show
3 The Phil Silvers Show “Doberman’s Sister” November 20, 1956 n CBS itcom heroes were crafty. For a form devoted to scheming of all kinds, S this was practically a job requirement. Each new installment required a fresh plot, in both senses of the word. Lucy dreamed of show-business success; Ralph pictured that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Both were forever denied what they wanted most, because what would happen to us if they ever got it? The early sitcom, in its most essential incarnation, 39 40 SITCOM thrived on failure, and on the perpetual return to equilibrium. But what if chaos itself were a sitcom’s default mode? And what if the scheming were less toothless and more disreputable? Could a sitcom be about an amoral con man and still be a sitcom? These were the questions prompted by The Phil Silvers Show (also known as Sgt. Bilko and You’ll Never Get Rich; like any good con man, the show traveled under a number of aliases), which ran on CBS from 1955 to 1959. Phil Silvers was never the ratings titan that I Love Lucy was, nor did it have the afterlife of The Honeymooners. So consider “Doberman’s Sister,” written by Nat Hiken, Leonard Stern, Tony Webster, and Billy Friedberg, as a route map to the sitcom road not taken, one laid out in detail and then mostly abandoned for close to four decades, until another set of clued-in, fearless Jewish comedians picked up where Bilko had left off. Each episode of The Phil Silvers Show, created by former Milton Berle writer Nat Hiken (who had also written for a radio show called The Magnifi- cent Montague that featured an up-and-coming performer named Art Car- ney) was a puzzle for us to unpack.
