Whilst winning is important so is participation and both are encouraged equally. Research has shown that young people in school who are involved in sport are more likely to be engaged in their school as shown by their attendance and their success in the classroom. This is no surprise to those of us who have been involved in education and sport. Secondary school athletes in the top of the South do outstandingly well on the national and international sporting stage with a far greater representation than you would expect from a region of our size. This is often put down to the great climate and facilities but is also a reflection of the involvement of so many volunteers and supporters who freely give so much of their time. Add in the opportunities available and you have a recipe for success. From what we have in our secondary schools event calendar it is clear that 2018 will be another busy year of sport. Best wishes to all of those competing, set your own goals and strive to achieve them. Wayne Hegarty Principal, Marlborough Boys’ College TSSSC Chairperson RSD Principals Management Group NZSSSC Board member 4 A MESSAGE FROM THE SPORT TASMAN CHIEF EXECUTIVE Sport Tasman would like to congratulate all participants taking part in the events contained in this booklet. Sport is an excellent way to connect with others, keep healthy and challenge yourself. We think it is magnificent that you are taking up the challenge offered to you by this 2018 programme of secondary school sport. Our region is proud of the great facilities, superb weather and fantastic environment that we offer participants when it comes to sport and recreation so if you are visiting us from outside of the district we would like to extend a particularly warm welcome to you. We also would like to thank the teachers, parents, umpires, sponsors and volunteers who give up their time to make these many events possible. Without you there would simply be none of these events so again a huge Thank You from all of us at Sport Tasman. On a final note we would like to encourage all participants to compete hard, play fairly and honestly and to represent their school with pride. Just by competing and trying to be at your best you are already all winners. Good luck! • New Steel Membership 2021
2021 For us, travelling to Auckland and playing away from home for 7 weeks straight was tough. Once we knew that we were coming home to play with our home crowd behind us, it lied our spirits and kept us fighting. It was such an emotional return to our Steel fortress. We all knew that we needed to play the best netball we had ever played to reward all of you for being such amazing, loyal supporters of our Steel team. The noise and energy that we get when we step out of those changing rooms and onto the main court is outstanding. The way you cheer from the beginning of the match right till the end helps us secure a win. You really are FROM THE our 8th player. As we look towards our 2021 campaign we’re excited for many reasons. With 8 home games and a new look team, it’s an opportunity for us to rebuild with some exciting players who are chomping at the bit to be given the opportunity to start in the ANZP. We are a little bit of the COACH unknown which will make us unpredictable and add an element of surprise. Firstly, we just want to say THANK YOU I believe we’ll have a good mixture of experience and for all your support! enthusiasm. Our Steel way is to keep possession of the 2020 was tough for us all, but throughout ball. We are a hard-working Club and that won’t change. our challenging 2020 campaign just Our girls will be prepared to grind it out and work till that knowing that you all were standing behind last whistle.
