UPDATE ON GARDEN GROUP ACTIVITIES

On Saturday 20th June several members of the Garden Group attended Taylors Clematis Nursery near Askern in South Yorkshire. The purpose of the visit was to gain more information on the Clematis Plants produced by the nursery and see examples set out in the polytunnels within the premises. An informative tour of the unit was undertaken and the narrative was given by the manager Chris. Members were shown many well known plants but also many new types that were less well known. Information was given with regard to pruning the different categories and planting requirements. Refreshments were kindly supplied by Taylors. Several members purchased one or more plants to take home. A good day out was had by all the gardeners. Information for Garden group members: Meeting - Tues 21st July to be hosted by Chris & Jan Blaiklock at their home address. Meeting - Tues 18th August cancelled due to many members on holiday. Meeting - Tues 15th Sept now to be hosted by Janet Crane at her home address. Chris Blaiklock

ENJOYING SHAKESPEARE

On Sat. 20th June the Enjoying Shakespeare group headed off to Stamford Shakespeare Theatre to do just that. We had a wonderful time watching a production of Henry V. We picnicked in the grounds of Tolethorpe Hall which is where the theatre is based. We were blessed by good weather for our picnic. The performance was riveting, lots of atmosphere, costume of the era & of course beautiful dialogue from the company of players. The battle scenes were admirably handled with a cast of few compared to the Branagh production of thousands. It is amazing what can be achieved with smoke, shouting & stirring speeches not forgetting the flag waving. We did have some rain which wetted the company but not the audience who of course are under cover. All in all we had a great time & returned to Ashfield with our enthusiasm intact for more Shakespeare Our next outing to Stamford is on the 1st August to see Romeo & Juliet with of course a picnic in the grounds again. Broadway theatre are again streaming productions on 22 July The Merchant of Venice & Othello on 26th August. There are numerous productions of Shakespeare in various venues around Nottinghamshire over the next 2-3 months from Newstead Abbey & the theatre in Thoresby courtyard. For our next meeting on 20th August we will be reading some sonnets, possibly listening to music from productions of Shakespeare & some excerpts from Othello. 17th Sept. An outing to Stratford 15th October 12th Night 19th Nov. workshop on 12th Night We still have spaces in our group if anyone would like to join us. Further information can be obtained from either Ron Walker or myself Ann Walter.

No Refunds Policy Your committee have reluctantly decided that when tickets are ordered they must be paid for, unless advised differently, and if you find you cannot attend the event you have bought the ticket for, it is up to you to sell that ticket on, and no refund will be given by U3A, unless there is a waiting list in operation. This is because some events have run at a loss due to people suddenly cancelling and expecting their money to be refunded. After all, if you book seats at the theatre, or a bus trip and found you couldn’t attend, you would lose your money, and, regrettably, we must have a similar policy.
