21 August 15 U Mumba Entered the Finals of the Second Season of Star 21 August 15 U Mumba entered the finals of the second season of Star Sports Pro Kabaddi with a comfortable 35-18 win over Patna Pirates at the Dome @SVP, NSCI here in Mumbai. It was a team effort by the winning team, with Anup Kumar yet again marshalling his resources like a true leader. The match saw Surender Nada and Mohit Chhillar, unleashing their ruthlessness while effecting tackle after tackle on the relatively inexperienced Patna raiders. Surender came up with 10 tackle points with one super tackle, a record for a defender. The winners fielded Shabeer Bapu Sharfudeen who too impressed in the important first session. It also proved his level of fitness for the decisive battle on Sunday when UMumba face the Bengaluru Bulls. The winners led 22-6 at the breather after inflicting two all-outs by the 11th minute and 19th minute. Patna on their part just couldn’t put up a fight as their rivals raced at break neck speed. Rishank Devadiga scored four points including a bonus, Anup came up with three and Shabeer with four to make things easy for their team. After having established a stranglehold on the match, U Mumba never relented in the second half. They even stared at an all-out but they managed to pull themselves out. At 23-10 and just three men on court in the 25th minute they were in deep trouble. But Jeeva Kumar who was also one of the pillars in U Mumba’s defence came up with a super tackle on Deepak Narwal to turn the tide. With the match almost in the pocket Anup came up with his pet tactic of running down the clock and Rishank and Shabeer taking the responsibility of the do-or-die raids Mumbai encountered no trouble thereafter. The second half was literally a Surender, Mohit and Jeeva show as they immobilised raider after rival raider to seal the tie. Sandeep Narwal the Patna captain got injured and the introduction of Vijay Malik also proved ineffective. Gurvinder, Deepak and even the speedy Korean Tae Deok Eom had no answers as Mumbai frustrated them by not catching them till they were sure. U Mumba’s solid defender Vishal Mane spoke highly of his team’s efforts to reach the finals. “Both our defence and offence is strong and this was the reason for all our successes. Our aim was to win with a point margin of at least 10-15 points. From the first match itself, we wanted to reach the finals and we have achieved this which is good.” When being asked about their strategy, Vishal indicated the same point, “Our strategy is that our defence and offence are both strong. And we accomplished that to reach the finals.” “Shabeer Bapu getting caught 4 times is nothing to be worried about”, said Vishal Mane. Rishank Devadiga, who was also present, pointed out that their strategy meant that Shabeer would go for the do-or-die raid. The leaders of the U Mumba defence and offence are Anup Kumar and Jeeva Kumar respectively and they led their departments very well, according to Vishal Mane. Captain Anup Kumar was wary of their opponents in the finals, Bengaluru Bulls. “This game wasn’t easy at all and the game on Sunday also will not be easy. We want to perform to our best in the final with full power. Bengaluru Bulls have a raider short and they use Manjeet (Chhillar) as a 3rd raider. If we get Manjeet early, their defence also will weaken.” Compared to last year’s combined prize money of Rs 1 crore, this year, the finalists (U Mumba and Bengaluru Bulls) will be competing for a prize money amount of Rs 1 crore. The runners-up will be awarded Rs 50 lakhs and the 3rd place finishers will receive a prize money of Rs 30 lakhs and the 4th place finishers Rs 20 lakhs. The top four teams in Season 2 of Star Sports Pro Kabaddi – U Mumba, Telugu Titans, Bengaluru Bulls and Patna Pirates have fought it out with their sweat and tears after 60 matches of intense action over 32 days. But while those results have helped them get to this stage, it all boils down to one single moment for these players- The #FinalPanga. How have these four teams made it till this final hurdle – who were their star players and will they be able to step up on the big stage to make it till the end? U MUMBA The table toppers hold a highly impressive record in Season 2 with a record number of wins for a single team with 12 out of 14 matches. They have an abundance of riches which they exhibited through their equally good bench strength. They have a super star in Captain Anup Kumar. He has a steadying and calming influence on his players as he guides them successfully through any crisis. On many occasions U Mumba made successful comebacks with Anup himself leading from the front. Anup has got immense help from Rishank Devadiga the find of the last season. He has now become one of the foremost players who can be trusted for the do-or-die third empty raids. Anup and Rishank are capable defenders too, especially when it comes to supporting the main defenders Mohit Chhillar (36 tackle points) and Surendra Nada (28 tackle points), who are the right and left corners and central defender Jeeva Kumar (27 tackle points), known for his gutsy and timely tackles.

  • 11 August 2015 There Are Places That Are Known for Being
11 August 2015 There are places that are known for being producing some of the greatest sportspersons this world has ever seen. In India itself, the city of Mumbai is known for two of India’s greatest cricketers in Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar. But when it comes to the ancient Indian sport of kabaddi, Haryana takes that particular mantle. Kabaddi, not yet recognised as an Olympic sport, has been played at the Asian level with India dominating it at the Asian Games since it was first played at Beijing in 1990. This has strengthened its roots especially in the rural areas and the sport being known as –‘hamari maati ka khel’ is now fast gaining popularity all over the country owing to the creation of an action packed and entertaining format in Star Sports Pro Kabaddi. With names like Manjeet Chhillar (captain of Bengaluru Bulls) and Mohit Chhillar (a defender from U Mumba) grabbing the headlines in the sports pages with their thrilling performances and breath-taking tackles, these men and other players who also come from the state of Haryana and participate in Star Sports Pro Kabaddi have put their state on the sports map of India. While there is a need for organisation of the sport especially at the grass root level, this hasn’t affected the huge pool of talent that is unearthed every year with the allure of Star Sports Pro Kabaddi encouraging more fresh faces to join the sport. Taking one village as an example in Nizampur on the outskirts of Delhi and household names like Manjeet Chhillar, Anup Kumar (captain of U Mumba) and even Rakesh Kumar (Patna Pirates) are just a few of the many kabaddi players who can boast of being from Nizampur.

23 August 15 Shabeer Bapu Sharfudeen turned out to be the superhero for U Mumba as they were declared the ultimate champions of Star Sports Pro Kabaddi Season 2 today. They beat Bengaluru Bulls 36- 30 in a match that went down to the wire, proving to be a befitting finale to the tournament. Shabeer came up with a three point super raid that brought back Mumba back in the game. The play started on a cautious note with the teams sharing as many points. The first session totally dominated by both the defences. For Mumba it was Mohit Chhillar who gave Ajay Thakur a torrid time. He had him four times which kept him without a point to his name. Surender Nada and Vishal Mane with two points each were also effective. Only Rajesh Mondal was successful in attack garnering a solitary point for Bengaluru. Shabeer and Anup managed to score three and two respectively in that period wherein the defenders ruled the roost. A high-octane game, the match kept the champions on tenterhooks as Ajay Thakur of Bengaluru came up with a five point super raid to inflict an all-out against the Mumbai outfit. That was in the 33rd minute and with the scores tied at 23-23 - the script for a pot-boiler. Eventually the argument ended with captain cool Anup Kumar again proving his mettle, making the right moves at the right time even under pressure. Bengaluru put up a tough fight but Mumba went on to consolidate their position with Rishank scoring three points.
