  • SIMPSONS to SOUTH PARK-FILM 4165 (4 Credits) SPRING 2015 Tuesdays 6:00 P.M.-10:00 P.M
CONTEMPORARY ANIMATION: THE SIMPSONS TO SOUTH PARK-FILM 4165 (4 Credits) SPRING 2015 Tuesdays 6:00 P.M.-10:00 P.M. Social Work 134 Instructor: Steven Pecchia-Bekkum Office Phone: 801-935-9143 E-Mail: [email protected] Office Hours: M-W 3:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M. (FMAB 107C) Course Description: Since it first appeared as a series of short animations on the Tracy Ullman Show (1987), The Simpsons has served as a running commentary on the lives and attitudes of the American people. Its subject matter has touched upon the fabric of American society regarding politics, religion, ethnic identity, disability, sexuality and gender-based issues. Also, this innovative program has delved into the realm of the personal; issues of family, employment, addiction, and death are familiar material found in the program’s narrative. Additionally, The Simpsons has spawned a series of animated programs (South Park, Futurama, Family Guy, Rick and Morty etc.) that have also been instrumental in this reflective look on the world in which we live. The abstraction of animation provides a safe emotional distance from these difficult topics and affords these programs a venue to reflect the true nature of modern American society. Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to provide the intellectual basis for a deeper understanding of The Simpsons, South Park, Futurama, Family Guy, and Rick and Morty within the context of the culture that nurtured these animations. The student will, upon successful completion of this course: (1) recognize cultural references within these animations. (2) correlate narratives to the issues about society that are raised.

Science and Popular Culture ARHM 2343: Science and Humanities Syllabus - Fall 2015 1 Course Information Meeting Time: Tuesday, 7:00pm-9:45pm Meeting Location: FO 1.202 Instructor: Professor Matthew J. Brown ([email protected]) Office Hours: Monday & Tuesday, 5:00-6:00pm, JO 4.120, or by appointment Schedule an appointment: http://doodle.com/mattbrown 2 Course Description This course will focus on portrayals of science in popular culture. Science is a process of research and inquiry, usually involving empirical evidence, which we will take to include natural, human, and social sciences as well as medical research and engineering. Popular culture includes fiction and non-fiction across all forms of media—such as printed text, art, film, television, comic books, and digital media—that is intended for a general audience. The reason to study representations of science and scientists in popular culture is threefold: it can help us gage the public understanding of science, it can inform us about the ideals we as a culture hold about science and its role in society, and it can help us understand the way that scientists and scientific institutions want to be understood. Furthermore, in this course, we will learn to think critically about science and its representation in each of these roles. 3 Objectives 3.1 General Education Objectives • Critical thinking skills – Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions. • Communication skills – Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and visual communi- cation. • Social responsibility – Students will demonstrate intercultural competency and civic knowledge by engaging effectively in local, regional, national and global communities.

The Self is Dead – Alienation and Nihilism in Rick and Morty Abstract Drawing upon Erich Fromm’s psychoanalytical-diagnosis of man in capitalism, this essay reflects upon some of the most political and philosophical themes of Cartoon Network’s adult animated sitcom Rick and Morty. It focuses mainly in juxtaposing the nihilism and the alienation of the characters Rick and Jerry, respectively. Discussing the loss of agency due to the illusions and repressions of contemporary society, the essay concludes that capitalism benefits from both Jerry and Rick’s self-destructive worldviews. • Earth-7642 Preview
Earth-7642 Campaign Sourcebook Unofficial Accessory for MSH RPG EARTH-7642 SOURCEBOOK "1 Introduction Welcome to Earth-7642, also known as Crossover-Earth, a melting pot of multiple worlds. In this universe, Marvel and DC characters coexist with one another, but also includes characters from other franchises, such as the Transformers, WildC.A.T.s, Witchblade, and Shi. This universe also contains manifestation of cultural elements from our reality (Earth-1218) like MST3k, Jonny Quest, Venture Bros, Rick and Morty, and others. The 3 main elements contained in Earth-7642 are Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and City of Heroes/Villains (CoX). Their histories and many characteristics are blended into a single world. ! ! ! Merger of 3 different universes: Marvel, DC, and City of Heroes This handbook will detail some of the historical, geographical, political, and social elements of Earth-7642. Not all events that have happened in Earth-616, Earth-1, and CoX will have happened in Earth-7642. The Judge will make final decisions and can add or alter anything that is found in this Handbook to suit their campaign. This handbook is a guide on how one dimension can contain the histories and characters of multiple dimensions. Earth-7642 is also subject to the sliding timescale, as fully detailed under the Marvel Universe. The rough equivalent is that for every 4 years passing in the real world, 1 year passes in Earth-7642. This basic rule does not always hold true, as a comic series might have a story that spans a day or two but took many months, if not longer, to tell in comic publications.

  • Rick, Morty, and Absurdism: the Millennial Allure of Dark Humor by Kim Koltun
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by DigitalCommons@CalPoly Author Biography Kim Koltun recently graduated with a major in sociology and a minor in history. She is from Manhattan Beach, CA. Her academic interests include modern Japan, world-systems theory, and U.S. mass incarceration. She cur- rently works for a company that connects independent, social-issue docu- mentaries with educators. Koltun Rick, Morty, and Absurdism: The Millennial Allure of Dark Humor by Kim Koltun Abstract The purpose of this paper is to investigate the millennial generation’s appeal to dark and absurdist forms of humor, using the show Rick and Morty as a pri- mary example. I first establish my definition of Absurdism—based on Nagel and Camus—and how Rick and Morty qualifies as an Absurdist work. I then go on to outline the popularity of the show among millennial audiences and explore its allure. There are three important sociological contexts to this explanation: the contrast between upbringing and reality, expedited modernity, and rapidly changing information structures. These set the stage for a distinctive style of humor that materialized as a means of comprehending the absurdities of life. I finish the paper with a section on how Nagel and Camus posit we respond to absurdity and how Rick and Morty and its millennial viewers reflect Absurdist philosophy. “If sub specie aeternitatis there is no reason to believe that anything mat- ters, then that doesn’t matter either, and we can approach our absurd lives with irony instead of heroism or despair”—Thomas Nagel1 “Nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everybody’s going to die.
