Associate Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School, MSU, 2017–present

This office supports over 12,000 PhD, Masters, graduate-professional students and postdocs at MSU. We oversee and provide guidance to the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and the fourteen graduate-degree granting colleges, including three medical colleges, with nearly 125 PhD programs and 175 Masters programs along with other professional and post-baccalaureate certificate programs, administering over $20M in Fellowship Funds.

Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, College of Social Science, MSU, 2015–2017

Part of the senior leadership team in the largest graduate college at MSU, this position provides vision, leadership, guidance and administrative oversight for over 30 Master’s Programs, 20 PhD Programs (including 6 dual-degree programs), and 20 Certificate Programs and Graduate Specializations across the eight academic departments, four professional schools, and ten institutes, centers and programs, administering over $1M in Fellowship Funds.

• Led a change in the culture of program administration and student advising, increasing communications and expectations-settings, resulting a shortening of time-to-degree and increased completion rates. • Led change in college-wide communications and collaborations in graduate education across the different programs and units. • Reformed fellowship fund allocations mechanisms and was able to increase funding by over $100k.

Director, American Economic Association Summer Program, 2015–2018

The AEA Summer Program targets talented students from underrepresented backgrounds to prepare them for graduate work in economics and related fields. The program is awarded competitively every five years. Over 100 promising students participated during my three years as director of the program and the program continues at MSU through Summer 2020.

• Led the (successful) proposal-writing team (approx. $4M funding received from external sources) • Secured financial support from the AEA, the National Science Foundation, the Federal Reserve System and private sponsors, as well as other units across MSU (including the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities to enable a deaf student to enroll in the program) • Negotiated an MOU with Western Michigan University for teaching and administrative support • Designed the program and served as its inaugural Director, including succession planning which implemented upon my transition to Associate Provost • Developed and saw through academic governance a two-tiered, two month long curriculum covering 24 academic credits, a seminar series and three field excursions • Hired and oversaw ten faculty and administrators for the program as well as a support staff • Recruited current PhD students from under-represented backgrounds in economics from across the US as fellows for the program

This position administered the Masters and PhD programs with over 100 students.

• Oversaw recruitment, program structures, retention and placement efforts • Performed extensive self-review and benchmark peer-comparison study of the PhD program • Led reform of the program resulting in considerable increases in degree completion, shortening of time-to-degree (and thus increasing the faculty-to-student ratio) and an increase in the diversity of the student body
