It’s been a great week for us as a club with victories over South Park and Northwood in the league leaving us 3 games unbeaten with 7 points in 9. I for one am loving the buzz about the place at the moment and the genuine excitement to see where we can go together as a collecve. However context is everything, and context is however great the feeling and some of the performances, our three wins have come against 3 sides that currently reside in the boom half of the table. A great start, but a start playing sides currently in the lower reaches none the less. Our target as a collecve cannot and will not change. Our challenge is to be compeve in every fixture we play. Every game so far, win draw or lose, could have gone either way. Whether it be a Chertsey, Bracknell or an FA Trophy match, or we are playing a side in the lower reaches, we want to be compeve from the 1st to the 90th or 93rd minute or whenever the ref blows his whistle. That we have certainly been this year. A somewhat off colour performance against South Park was followed by a sterling performance against Northwood. South Park, similar to Uxbridge, appeared to cheat their wide players on and almost again looked a 4-2-4 at mes. Their number 10 kept dropping Into the hole which le us with a conundrum. Leave him and let him face us up and slide balls through us, or go with and end up a 3 v 3 behind in a big vacuum. For this reason, aer we gained the lead, we changed to a 4-1-4-1 and asked French to sit in the back 4. This allowed him to deal with the 10 when he came in and leave us with 1 spare man defensively again. We dropped deeper to make it easier for us to stay compact, and got Kane to run beyond Dan Brown into the space le - which he did so, so well and to be honest you couldn’t fault any of the boys in the last 30. Against Northwood, we faced a completely different prospect. A Northwood side that loved playing football, but to the extent it seemed like they were playing futsal for many parts of the game. You could see they had been coached well, have good players and broke our press a few mes, but their striker was isolated and the way they played meant there was rarely a threat behind, only in front so to speak. 8 #ASHWHI ashfordtownmiddlesexfc.com Duffys screamer (Albeit deflected) free kick was deserved in my opinion, and we went in good value for a 1-0 lead. The second half Northwood became abit more direct, whilst we sank in and let them have the ball up to a certain engagement line. Even then, they kept playing inside so we encouraged the boys to over exaggerate the line which they did. Northwood kept trying to play inside sll and with that, we would nick it, counter, and then watch with disbelief at some of the incredible football the boys displayed for us. I don’t think anybody could have argued if we got 3, but it shows the fine margins in football, as in the 83rd minute a fantasc Macca penalty save spared us a last 10 minutes of going grey. Eventually the final whistle went, and brought down the curtains on another excellent 3 points. Today will be a very different proposion. Whitstable have started well and they too find themselves in the top 6 of their respecve league early doors. They will pose us different problems to we have faced over the last few weeks, so we will have to be at our best. Get behind the team as I know you will and let’s see where it takes us! A couple more things from me - can everyone please please ‘like’ the Ashford Town Middlesex FC page. It takes 10 seconds but would be a huge help. We are trying to court new sponsors and have an online drive for new supporters so the more that follow the beer the appeal. If any of you own a business or work for a local company that would be interested in buying a board at the club, please shout me or Paul Gully. We are on abit of a binge at the moment and all the money goes to improving the club for everyone, Mens, Youth, Womens & juniors alike. Lastly from me, thank you so much to everyone for your amazing support. Going round the M25 to Waord on a Tuesday night and seeing we have packed out the width of a pitch with support is an incredible effort - so thank you so much from me, the staff and the boys. Enjoy the game, and I’ll see you in the bar aer for a beer or two. We very much welcome our visitors to the Robert Parker Stadium. Both of us are members of the Isthmian League, albeit in different divisions, our opponents being in the South Eastern secon. At this moment they are in 5th place having won three and lost three of their opening league matches. A number of other clubs have matches in hand on them and league posions make lile difference at this early stage but their results have been a lile up and down by the look of it, the latest result being a 0-6 home defeat against Hythe Town on Tuesday evening, a result that has dented their goal difference considerably with nine goals scored and fieen conceded in the six league games played to date. Maybe that was something of a freak result on the night as before that, they won three league matches in a row, all against Sussex clubs, although they did also suffer a fairly heavy defeat, 1-5, to Premier Division Carshalton in the FA Cup. This is their first match in this season’s FA Trophy, having received a bye in the opening round when we were playing Hullbridge. Their best season in the compeon was in 2013-2014 when they baled through five rounds before going out narrowly in the 2nd Round Proper at home to Ebbsfleet United. I’m sure everyone’s sick of hearing it now but please remember that it’s table service only at the bar and we must have everyone sing down please and properly spaced out around the pitch.
