5 Deacons Eye More Success in '93

Wake Forest Football has a new look and a new confidence entering the 1993 season. The new look, of course, involves first-year head coach Jim Caldwell, who came to Wake Forest last December to replace the retiring Bill Dooley. Caldwell's credentials are outstand• ing. He has worked under some of the nation's premier coaches, most recently spending the last seven years at Perm State on Joe Paterno's staff. Caldwell also has served as an assistant at Louisville (under Howard Schnellenberger), Colorado (Bill McCartney), Northwestern (Dennis Green) and Southern Illinois (Rey Dempsey) in preparing for his first head coaching assignment. The new confidence that Caldwell has in• herited at Wake Forest comes from a tremen• dous 1992 season, in which the Deacons won six straight games (the second-longest win• ning streak in school history) and compiled an 8-4 overall record, their best since 1979. The year featured, of course, a dramatic 39-35 vic• tory over Oregon in the Independence Bowl• only the second postseason win ever at WFU. Continuing that level of success will be a challenge for Caldwell and his staff, but one that he has accepted enthusiastically. "When a program has had an opportunity to experience success, such as the success our players experienced last season, they acquire self-confidence and a great sense of accom• plishment," Caldwell says. "Once they get a taste of success, they're looking for the next level. That's what we will attempt to do-raise their level of expectation. "Our spring practice went extremely well. The attitude of the team was super, and most importantly, I felt that we improved in a num• ber of areas from our first practice in March until our final workout in April:' Caldwell will have 42 lettermen returning from the 1992 squad. Only 10 of those are starters, however, six on offense and just four on the defensive side. Last year's seniors included an All-America tackle (Ben Coleman), a three-time all-league tight end (John Henry Mills) and a two-year starting (Keith West) on the offensive side. KEVJN GJLE:J is the Znd-leading tackler returning in the ACC. On defense, a number of new faces will be in starting roles with the departure of seven DIXON (5'11, 173, Sr), one of the most explo• The Deacons obviously do not have an• seniors, all of whom played key roles in last sive wide receivers in the country the past two other individual who can match Dixon's num• season's success. Gone from the offensive front, though, are All-America tackle Ben Coleman and guard Tommy Mordica, a starter in 37 straight con• tests, leaving major holes to fill. Veteran DAVID LOWE (6'7, 295, Sr) should move into one of those slots after an injury• plagued '92. He started all 11 games in 1991 be• fore losing his spot to Coleman. Guard REG• GIE AVERY (6'1, 295, Jr) is the only other on the offensive front. A number of young and inexperienced linemen are anxious to contribute. Some will undoubtedly have that opportunity this year.

Quarterbacks The most observed newcomer to the start• ing lineup in 1993 figures to be at quarterback with the departure of two-year regular Keith West. RUSTY LARUE (6'2, 182, So) and JIM KEMP (6'1, 194, Sr) shared the backup role behind West a year ago and battled for the top spot during the spring as they adjusted to a dif• ferent offensive scheme. Both individuals are outstanding field leaders and adapted quickly to the new offensive system. LaRue missed some early offseason work• outs while with the Demon Deacon team, but turned in an impressive Spring time All-ACC performer John Henry Mills yards on only seven carries; and CARDELL Game, completing 14-of-25 passes for 272 falls to WALTER RASBY (6' 4, 249, Sr), an ex• CHAVIS (5'10, 212, So), who lettered asa true yards and a pair of scores. Another strongpoint of the offense should be running back where four proven perform• ers are back. Tailbacks JOHN LEACH (5'9, 213, Sr) and NED MOULTRIE (5'9, 184, Sr) combined for nearly 1,300 rushing yards and 13 in sharing that position last season. Leach, one of the ACC's most versatile backs, was slowed by a midseason leg injury but returned to full speed for the Independence Bowl where he ran for 116 yards. Moultrie's 149-yard outburst against Army was the highest single game total by a Deacon runner in six years and helped him average 95.4 yards per game in the final five regular season dates. The team's top two fullbacks, MITCH KEN• NEDY (5'10, 235, Sr) and WENDELL WELLS (5'11, 215, Jr) also return. Both are outstand• ing blockers and can produce yardage on their own as well, especially Wells who gained 276 yards on just 53 carries (5.2 per) and averaged 21.7 yards per play on seven pass receptions. Young running backs to watch are STACIE GRESHMAN (6'1, 221, rFr), the top rusher in The one-two running back tandem of the '93 Spring Game when he scored twice JOHN LEACH (above) and NED MOULTRIE (runs of 65 yards and one yard) and totaled 78 (left) is a Deacon strongpoint.

Kickers The kicking game belongs to veteran MIKE GREEN (5'11, 202, Sr), who has converted 25 of 35 tries the past two years. Last season he handled the punting chores, averag• ing 37.0 yards per boot, and could take over kickoffs as well this fall. No other scholarship players are listed as kickers on the preseason roster except for in• coming freshman BILL HOL1DWS ( 6' 1, 205).

The Schedule The 1993 schedule includes six home games for the Deacons, one more than a year ago, and league dates in Groves Stadium with N.C State, Duke, Georgia Tech and Maryland. Jn non-ACC play, Wake will host Vanderbilt and familiar foe Appalachian State, while travel• ing to Northwestern. The conference road slate is a particularly demanding one with trips to national power Florida State and top 20 contenders North Carolina, Clemson and Virginia.
