Our water quality expertise is recognised around the world and we are a leader in wastewater recycling. SA Water is committed to delivering reliable and valued services to its customers. We exist to provide safe, clean and affordable drinking water to more than 1.6 million South Australians. Once this water has been used, the sewage is removed and treated to ensure the best environmental and health outcomes. Wholly owned by the Government of South Australia, we are focused on providing essential services that support growth and economic development throughout our state. Our highly skilled and specialised people are driven to serve our customers. We have been serving the community for 160 years and manage more than $13 billion worth of assets. Our water quality expertise is recognised around the world and we are a leader in wastewater recycling. We employ more than 1,400 people – each one looking for innovative ways to deliver efficient and responsive water and sewerage services to our customers, now and into the future. SA Water is responsible to the Honourable Ian Hunter MLC, Minister for Water and the River Murray. This year saw the completion of Chief Executive John Ringham’s long and valued service with SA Water. I would like to thank John for leading SA Water during a period of substantial change as the corporation adapted to a regulated environment and prepared for greater competition in the future. John’s experience in the UK’s regulated water industry and his focus on achieving greater efficiency means SA Water is in a good position to deliver on its RBP16 commitments. Following the 2007 Mount Bold wildfire, in South Australia, a 1 in 5 year rainfall event resulted in the failure of many sediment traps due to substantial sediment movement within the reservoir reserve. This study assesses how hillslope morphology can influence post-fire surface erosion and the subsequent appropriate placement of sediment traps. Erosion pins and sediment traps were used at five different sites to measure hillslope surface change and trapped sediment volumes. Terrestrial laser scanning was used to model surface change where slope gradients are 1:2 or greater. Surface change was assessed in relation to slope gradient, slope length, cross-slope curvature, hillslope position and fire severity. The results suggested a threshold for substantial increased sediment yield at slope gradients of 1:2. The findings also suggested that concave cross-slope curvatures were associated with significantly larger amounts of sediment movement.   • The Onkaparinga River National Park Management Plan
    OUR PARKS, OUR HERITAGE, OUR LEGACY Cultural richness and diversity are the marks of a great society. It is these qualities that are basic to our humanity. They are the foundation of our value systems and drive our quest for purpose and contentment. Cultural richness embodies morality, spiritual well-being, the rule of law, reverence for life, human achievement, creativity and talent, options for choice, a sense of belonging, personal worth and an acceptance of responsibility for the future. Biological richness and diversity are, in turn, important to cultural richness and communities of people. When a community ceases to value and protect its natural landscapes, it erodes the richness and wholeness of its cultural foundation. In South Australia, we are privileged to have a network of parks, reserves and protected areas that continue to serve as benchmarks against which we can measure progress and change brought about by our society. They are storehouses of nature’s rich diversity, standing as precious biological and cultural treasures. It is important to realise that survival of species in ‘island’ reserves surrounded by agriculture or urban areas is uncertain, and that habitat links between reserves are essential for their long-term value as storehouses. As a result of more than a century of conserving nature and cultural items, we possess a “legacy” which is worth passing on to future generations. There are twelve essentials for the protection of our park environments: • Recognition that a primary purpose of our national parks system is to conserve the wide diversity of South Australia’s native plants and animals and to improve their chances of survival through active wildlife management.
