When Art Fund activities ceased, the collections were divided among the Queensland Art Gallery, the Queensland University and other public bodies. The visit was also an opportunity to connect to her Irish heritage. During some 'off duty' time, as she was cycling through the Irish countryside, she came across the notice that forms the title of this paper: 'Wanted, a strong girl, able to milk and make herself agreeable' (Lahey 1919, 9). That Vida even recorded the advertisement in her journal says something about the impression that it made on her. The roles of domestic worker and 'agreeable' object form the twin poles of an ideologically determined continuum along which single women have traditionally been expected to define themselves. It is a short, rather constrained continuum because the definition of femininity has been articulated in tandem with the heterosexual institution of the family. -

Abstract Title: Bronze Southern Doors of the Mitchell Library, Sydney. The building of the major part of the Mitchell Library (1939 - 1942) resulted in four pairs of bronze entrance doors, three on the northern facade and one on the southern facade. The three pairs on the northern facade of the library are obvious to everyone entering the library from Shakespeare Place and are well documented. However very little has been written on the pair on the southern facade apart from brief mentions in two books of the State Library buildings, so few people know of their existence. Sadly the excellent bronze doors on the southern facade of the library cannot readily be opened and are largely hidden from view due to the 1987 construction of the Glass House skylight between the newly built main wing of the State Library of New South Wales and the Mitchell Library. These doors consist of six square panels featuring bas-reliefs of different early printers’ marks and two rectangular panels at the bottom with New South Wales wildflowers. -

2380 Address-in-Reply 6 Sep 2018 this consultation draft now so that the parliament, the waste and recycling industry, councils and the community can consider the full package of proposed amendments to legislation to implement the waste levy. Information about consultation will be provided on the Department of Environment and Science’s website. Since March this year, when the government announced our intention to accept the recommendation of the Lyons report and introduce a waste levy to underpin our waste strategy, we have been undertaking comprehensive consultation with a range of stakeholders to ensure we hear everyone’s voices. I look forward to continuing consultation as the bill progresses through parliament, and as the regulations are discussed. Queenslanders are increasingly conscious of waste as an economic and environmental issue. This bill delivers a key enabler of change. The waste levy will provide an incentive for people to reduce the waste they create and find more productive and job-creating uses for their waste. Importantly, the bill also ensures that it will not cost Queenslanders any more to put out their wheelie bin. It is not hard to see the long-term economic and environmental benefits that this levy will bring to Queensland. Through the introduction of a waste levy and a new waste strategy, we can work towards a more sustainable future for generations of Queenslanders to come. I commend the bill to the House. Explanatory Notes for Development Assessment Local Heritage Register Amendments to the Queensland Heritage Act 1992, Schedule 8 and 8A of the Integrated Planning Act 1997, the Integrated Planning Regulation 1998, and the Queensland Heritage Regulation 2003 became effective on 31 March 2008. All aspects of development on a Local Heritage Place in a Local Heritage Register under the Queensland Heritage Act 1992, are code assessable (unless City Plan 2000 requires impact assessment). Those code assessable applications are assessed against the Code in Schedule 2 of the Queensland Heritage Regulation 2003 and the Heritage Place Code in City Plan 2000. City Plan 2000 makes some aspects of development impact assessable on the site of a Heritage Place and a Heritage Precinct. Heritage Places and Heritage Precincts are identified in the Heritage Register of the Heritage Register Planning Scheme Policy in City Plan 2000. Those impact assessable applications are assessed under the relevant provisions of the City Plan 2000. Designed in the traditional grid-like layout, popular in the Victorian era, the cemetery is demonstrative of the early European community’s need for burial grounds. The fabric, setting and context of the site are all important. The cemetery has distinct sections which show its evolution from a Victorian cemetery, established in the 1870s, to one that includes newer forms of burial, such as the war and lawn cemeteries. Within the cemetery grounds is an early and intact shelter built in 1891 and the sexton’s residence, a substantial interwar timber house on the corner of Gympie and Kitchener Roads. The cemetery has an important Commonwealth War Graves Commission burial section on the site which contains 386 World War II graves. Mature trees on the site, which include rows of Camphor Laurel and Cypress Pine trees, add to the site’s significance and visual appeal. History “Cemeteries not only help explain our past, they also provide a sense of continuity and identity. So our burial grounds reflect vital aspects of our social, religious, folk, architectural, literary and botanical history which are not found in such a combination in any other place.”1 1 After the declaration of Queensland as a colony, separate to New South Wales, in 1859, the new Queensland Government was anxious to increase the colony’s population and to encourage agricultural settlements. -

This is a how-to guide for writing powerful and useful letters that can inform the public debate around Adani’s coal project. What makes a good letter? Some tips: ● The best letters are short, snappy and succinct - never longer than 200 words. ● Try to limit your letter to one central idea so it is clear and easy to read. Don’t be afraid to use humour if it suits! ● Good letters are timely if they are in response to a big announcement or event. This means written and sent on the same day. ● Back-up your claims with facts where appropriate. There are many resources on our website (see below for links). ● Try to weave in a personal story if you can and it is fitting. For example: ○ I’m a tourist operator on the Reef and Adani’s coal mine will put my business in jeopardy. ○ I am a teacher and see school students are very attuned to the impact of climate change on the Reef and Adani’s role in this. ○ I went to visit the Reef last year and am saddened by the fact the QLD Government is ignoring coral bleaching events in favour of more coal mining. ○ I’m a Townsville resident who has experienced the mining industry’s boom-bust cycles and I think the future of Townsville should be solar. -
