It is with a mixture of satisfaction and One of my proudest achievements as sadness that I write my last message as President was to bring a sense of harmony President of District 9. and cooperation to the District Board. The Board is now running very smoothly, and I have been honored to serve as President of continues to be innovative in the things we not only the largest District in the ACBL, but are able to do for our players. also the best one. We are very lucky that we are able to sustain and grow new programs All of the volunteers that serve on the District that benefit all our current players as well as Board, do it to give back to the game that we our future players. When I was first elected all love. Many times it is a thankless job, but President, we had just started the CFFK, the all the representatives do an outstanding fund for our junior players. Every year we job. I want to thank each and every one of collect $1.00 per member of District 9 to go them for the complete support they have towards the fund. We to say what a GREAT pleasure it has been to use some of the funds to subsidize our junior serve with them. players so they may attend the Youth NABCs. It is our hope that within the next year, the I will continue to support our District in any fund will be large enough so that we will not way that I can. need to collect the $1.00 from each unit. Again, many thanks. Also, another achievement has been that we are able to subsidize the winners of both the NAPs as well as the GNTs, so that they may represent our District at the NABCs. Most Districts do not have the money to be able to subsidize the players. As long as the grass roots games are supported, we will be able to continue this for many years. Shirley: I hate mediating arguments, but fool anyone. When your opponents are dealt this one was extreme (Hands rotated). Did 7 ♠ and 3 ♥, these two even splits will both South play correctly or did he mastermind occur 50% of the time. While you gain when the deal? the ♥K is singleton in the East hand, you lose ♠ A K Q 5 3 in the more likely scenario that West has ♥ A Q 7 4 ♥Kx plus 3 ♠, so I rate the line as much lower ♦ J 9 than 50%, and rate the ♥ finesse as 50%. ♣ Q 6 South: I am not a mathematician but my gut instinct told me my line was better, but ♠ 6 Shirley you can give us your opinion, since ♥ J 10 9 6 5 2 I was the only player who failed to make at ♦ K Q 2 least 12 tricks. ♣ A K 3 Shirley’s Assessment: Certainly North had zero reason to blast into 6♥ without North East South West checking for keycards first. Further, despite 1 ♥ Pass the result, South’s line was far better than the 1 ♠ Pass 2 ♥ Pass simple finesse. SBNJAN-FEB-2015b (Conflicted copy from Scott’s Mac mini on 2014-12-16) 22 January 5, 2015 9:06 AM SURVEY SEZ

Thank you for your thoughtful responses about what could improve your bridge-playing experience, including at club games and at tournaments. This survey has been up for many months and we appreciate your taking the time to give us feedback.

In no particular order, here are some responses to your comments.

Although tournament organizers would love to provide less expensive hotel rooms at our host hotels, we are only able to use properties who want us, who have enough space for us, and who will work with us to provide playing space at rates we can afford. We will continue looking for new venues. If you have an idea for a location that we may have missed, please communicate that idea to your unit or the district president.

You have requested pleasant directors for sectionals and regionals. We will continue to remind our tournament directors to try to remain calm and charming in their important but difficult position. Can you, players, please try to do the same?

For the specific club members who named their club and told what you think would improve it, we have passed your comments on to the club president.

When you are at a regional, we always require the hotel (or the convention center) to have an abundance of water pitchers. If you can’t find them, or they are empty, please see if you can find somebody like the chairperson. In a pinch, you could ask the director (who really will not want to take the time to track down the hotel staff); or you could ask the nearest thing to a hotel catering department employee. Please believe me that our instructions to hotel staff are to keep the water pitchers filled!

At a sectional, you might have to make a special request for water pitchers. I hope you don’t have to ask more than once.

We feel like we bend over backwards to be sure we DO NOT cater to the pros and top players. Please respond again with some specific examples. You might possibly be confusing ACBL policy (out of our control) with things that under the local tournament organizers’ control.

One player who responded might have a key to why club game attendance is down all over ACBL. Here’s what she said: There should be an ACBL enforceable policy to prevent players from coughing into their hands and picking up their cards, coughing without covering their mouths, playing bridge with a cold, etc. ‘It’s only an allergy’ and/or ‘I don’t have germs’ is not an excuse. Again, this should be enforced by the local clubs. I have not seen this, and have cut back my playing hours.

And now please go to District9ACBL.org to answer our latest survey.

SBNJAN-FEB-2015b (Conflicted copy from Scott’s Mac mini on 2014-12-16) 25 January 5, 2015 9:06 AM THE FORCING 2NT RESPONSE

TO 1H/1S OPENINGS by Paul W Dennis Within the last year or so the ACBL Bulletin 2) Greatly increasing the likelihood that ran a series of articles on the 2/1 Game Force the 2/1 was made on a five card suit * System and some of the problems inherent 3) Simplifying rebid problems for opener to the system. In reading the articles, it struck me that the biggest single problem is Let’s take this common hand the inability to show extra values below the level of game. ♠K x ♥A Q T x ♦K Q x x ♣Q x x

Take this simple auction: This is a simple 1NT opening. But suppose partner opens the bidding 1♠ – now what? 1 ♠ – 2 ♦ – 3 ♦ The most likely answer is a 2♦ bid, hoping to get by the next round of bidding. Does opener have four card support or has Unfortunately partner now raises to 3♦. he raised on three to an honor or two? Does If your next call is 3N you will be leaving opener have extra values or is it the same excess value undisclosed. If you bid 3♥ you eleven point dog the partnership routinely run the risk of partner taking you past 3N, opens? which may be your best contract.

Similarly if the auction now proceeds Let’s turn it around and look at opener’s possible hands: 1 ♠ – 2 ♦ – 3 ♦ – 3NT 1 ♠Q 9 x x x ♥x ♦A J x ♣A J x x Is responder minimum or could he have a good hand with an essentially manufactured 2 ♠A Q x x x ♥x ♦A x x x ♣A K x two over one response? 3 ♠A Q J x x ♥K x x ♦J x x x ♣K The problem as I see it is that the simple 2/1 response carries too much of the burden On the first hand, 3NT is the best contract; with point spreads of 11+ to infinity, and on the second hand 6♦ looks good; and the suit quality ranging from AKQJxxx or better third hand probably belongs in 4♠. down to KTxx or worse and everything in between. To summarize, the 2NT response shows:

Most pairs play a 3N response as 13-15 HCP 16+ HCP with two or possibly three small of opener’s No five card suit, no singletons suit. The use of this bid gets rid of many of Likely 2 cards in opener’s major (could the balanced 2/1s with only a four card suit be Jxx or xxx) but still leaves the possibility of still better hands making a 2/1 one in a poor suit. Over responder’s 2N response opener bids as follows (assume a 1S opening): Why not take those hands out of the equation by using a 2N response to show 1. New suit at three level – additional 16+ HCP? This has the beneficial effect of: four (or five) card suit 2. 3S – six card suit, 14+ 1) Immediately showing the extra 3. 3N - 5332 – 12 to 14 HCP strength 26 Sunshine Bridge News
