The season starts on Wednesday with the Gala Evening and runs until Saturday. This is an incredibly special occasion as Selwyn College has been granted the rights to perform this as the New Zealand Premiere! This is a huge honour for Selwyn and is the result of a long track record of excellence in the Performing Arts. This is reflected in the large number of Showdown Awards bestowed on our students and staff such as Best Leading Male, Best Leading Female, Best Musical Director, Best Company Chorus to name a few. 'In the Heights' tells the story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighbourhood – a community on the brink of change, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind. This musical has won Tony Awards, a Grammy Award and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The show’s American writer has tweeted about the fact that Selwyn College is doing the NZ Premiere and has shared our promotional poster around the world! Selwyn College, Kohimarama Road, Kohimarama Green Jam Inspires Selwyn Students Three Selwyn students attended the Green Jam Youth Sustainability Conference this week. Jarrin Kistanna our Environment Council Leader reports: "The 2015 Green Jam was an awesome experience; we learnt about the environmental problems we are soon to be facing followed by many great solutions. We got to hear from several talented young speakers who inspired the audience. We also got to meet with other 'Enviro' teams from all around schools in Auckland, sharing ideas that we will use to benefit the Selwyn community’s sustainability and waste management systems." Introducing New Teacher – Anisa Barrowclough I am excited to be working in the English learning area at Selwyn College. I completed a conjoint Law and Arts degree in 2007. I then spent several years working in Auckland and overseas as a lawyer before deciding to retrain as a teacher. I am passionate about English as a subject and particularly interested in encouraging students to read and to develop critical thinking skills. I am very much looking forward to being a part of the vibrant community at Selwyn College.
